Lyrics for Another Postcard as interpreted by neko-chan

Another Postcard Lyrics
You can't imagine so many monkeys in the daily mail
All of them coming anonymously so they leave no trail
I never thought I'd have an admirer from overseas
But someone is sending me stationary filled with chimpanzees.

Some chimps in swimsuits, some chimps are swinging from a vine
Some chimps in jackboots, some chimps that wish they could be mine.
Starsky and Hutch chimps, a chimp who's sitting on the can
A pair of Dutch chimps who send their love from Amsterdam.

Another postcard with chimpanzees
And every one is addressed to me.

If I had to guess, I'd say the monkey-sender thinks it's great
He's sending me, maybe she's sending me just to see me get irate
I'm losing sleep - and it's gonna be keeping me up all night
I thought it was funny, but now I've got money on a monkey fight.

Some chimps in hard hats, chimps a-working on a chain gang
Some chimps who love cats, burning rubber in a Mustang
A birthday-wishing chimp, a chimp in black like a goth
A goin' fishin' chimp, a British chimp in the bath.

Another postcard with chimpanzees
And every one is addressed to me.

Somehow they followed me even though I packed and moved my home
No matter what, they come and they come they won't leave me alone
Another monkey in the mail could make me lose my mind
But look at me shuffling through the stack until I finally find

Some chimps in swimsuits
Some chimps in Jackboots
Some chimps in hard hats
Some chimps who love cats
I've got some shaved chimps; that's chimps devoid of any hair
I've got depraved chimps dressed up in women's underwear

Another postcard with chimpanzees
And every one is addressed to me
Every one is addressed to me
Another postcard with chimpanzees
And every one is addressed to me.

i think that the barenaked ladies are like one of the only bands that can sing about monkeys and make it a kick ass song

I heard Steven Page talk about this song on the radio a few months back. It's about a stalker (man or woman?) who keep sending him postards with monkeys on them.

MuCiSfReKk728 is right... bnl is the only band that can have songs about postcards and monkeys and make it kick ass awesome... i think its just one of those songs they have that have no meaning and are just for humor and fun... but it still rocks... though i can see how its could be about a stalker.... but instead of wrighting a song addressing that completely, they, being them, wrote a humorous song about postcards with chimpanzees on them... they rock!

I've always thought this song was about spam and junk mail and how it can drive you crazy.

bugalou is right. They're connecting the postcards with the chimps on them with spam and junk mail. every one of their songs has some praxis that connects it to something much bigger.

hurm. well i love bnl. i like how they can take simple seemingly nonsense lyrics and yet they still have some meaning. maybe im reading way too much into it, but perhaps its about how some people only give you superficial crap and dont mean anything. maybe?

So wait, was there really a chimp-stalker, or is it made up? I mean, I'm sure they get lots of chimp-cards now that the song is out, but before that?

This song is just proof that BNL can sing about /anything/ and people will sing along. Another song like that is that bicycle one by Queen.

I love BNL but this song is just commercial air time. Maybe their is some meaning about the clutter of our lives gathered from well meaning friends and after awhile there just isnt anymore room. the way of the world

To neo979: I read that the song is actually inspired by the truth...Someone really kept sending them monkey postcards.
To baseball08: It's hard to buy a postcard that DOESN'T have a chimp on it in Ocean City MD.

This song is about a stalker that the band had. No matter where they went, annonomous postcard with different chimps on them were sent to them. This is song is NOT about junk mail or email spam. It isnt about the clutter in our lives. It is about this stalker that sent those monkey postcards to the different band members.

So, I traveled all through Europe last spring, and in each city in the dozen countried I visited, THE ONLY PLACE with postcards with chimpanzees (or any other kind of non human primate for that matter) is ENGLAND. I was so sad. Ok, also the Rock of Gibralter off of Spain has some postcards with monkeys because they supplied free roaming "rock apes" as a tourist attraction, but even that is a Brittish territory.

I heard this song was about a postcard Ed's neighbor sent him once, not about some obsessive stalker. He talks about it in one of the podcasts.

This song is most fun. Haha. If someone sent me postcards with chimpanzees, that'd be fun. I don't get a lot of mail, though. I bet that it gets weird after a while, though... real crazy/stalker like.

to me its obvious that this song is about the old AOL cds that they kept sending you. they used to send them to everyone, and were always dressign them up different so they would appeal to the eye and people would pay attention to them and not just throw them out.

This song is about junk mail. It's written about all the "monkeys in the mail" and how you can't get away from it. Then the singer starts finding humor in the junk mail so he looks for what's new.
