Lyrics for Fractions as interpreted by all_is_vanity

Fractions Lyrics
one in three you're here
to tell me we can't do this anymore
(one in three, you're here to tell me we can't do this
three for three, I will disagree)

your hair and face against the mirror
as i take the steps to save what's left of me
someone's out when it's over

people steal from you
they take anything they choose

it's good to see you
(I missed you last night)
that's such a lovely color
(it goes with your eyes)
before we fall asleep
(I just wanted to say)
this all seems so easy but there are choices to make

can't decide, then look at the faces
(candlelight)
we're burning the pages
and hurting ourselves with this false start
resign yourself to always be (and we pretend as if it gets easier)
without the one thing you need (but does it get easier)
debating words with no reply
when we have these mornings where we can say goodbye

I wanted to mean everything to you
but this isn't right
you keep coming back disassembled
and I keep losing this fight

I won't answer

dancing under starlight glow
no one in the city knows
confidence can take you
when nerves try to shake you
from going all the way
it's not that far

we watch the tide roll in
(with cold air and coffee cakes)
holding our words at lips
(stopping the sounds they make)
we know the way to go
(we know what steps to take)
to be here

these words with no reply
stopping we's and starting i's
this need is killing me
and taking me over

i wanted to mean everything to you
but this isn't right
you keep coming back disassembled
and i keep losing this fight

Emery is totally awsome...this song is one of the best. It makes me thing of this past weekend. My family friend...we've known eachother since we were born. And something kinda happened between us...a spark kinda thing, but he has a gf, and this song just speaks to me with that kinda thing, and yeah. I feel like crap about what happened...but then agian i don't.

When I first heard this song it was in the background somewhere and I remember hearing the: that's such a lovely color
(it goes with your eyes) part and being totally stunned. I just never heard a song that used that as a line before and i thought it was really clever...as for what the song means, well it seems like a really hard breakup or something and not really having anything to say after it's over. i dont know, im probably wrong, there are always these meanings I miss...

this song has always made me think of a relationship that wasn't supposed to be. the part about "it's so good to see you" almost sounds like the two people have a lot of history but have been separated and are reuniting for the first time. it also seems like there is a lot that is unspoken... like they have feelings for one another that they simply cannot admit, even though it's obviously there. i especially like the part that goes "i wanted to mean everything to you" because it sounds like a desperation to give the person that he loves everything she needs, but she is on a self-destructive path and no matter how baly he wants to help her, he knows he just can't.

Judging from the other opinions, I could be wrong, but I thought that the meaning of the song was pretty clear.
Here Goes:
I think that it is about a guy and a girl that are having sex and know that it is wrong (since Emery is a christian band, opposing sex out o' marriage) but can't help "having" each other because they are soo in love. Each partner realizes the destructive pattern, like
"We're burning the pages and hurting ourselves with this 'False Start'"
The lyrics are soo sweet, kinda romantic actually (not to sound gay or anything) but it's obvious the couple is soo emotionally AND physically attached to each other. They are Crazy in Love-but the sex just seems to complicate things
"I wanted to mean everything to you, but this isn't right. You keep coming back disassembled and I keep losing this fight"
I think it's sweet and sad cause' I can relate to the song. Sex is awesome, but can change the tone of a relationship *scratch that* can change a relationship entirely and end in a heart-wrenching breakup. Bottom line: I think the song is trying to persuade people to Abstinence.

Your almost right on Chriscom. This song is about something we all know and love: the casual hook-up. This song is about a guy and his sex-buddy. For some reason they are not together but keep getting it on. However, the narrotor (most likely the guy) fell for her. I think the line "people steal from you, they take anything they choose" is a reference to his "heart"- ya know, love. Saying "you stole my heart" is cheezy though, thats probably why its not in the song, its just suggested. Very notable is the line that says "when we have these mornings when we *can* say goodby" If they were in love then they wouldnt be able to say goodbye. I think the lines "its good to see you... choices to make" are all things that he's thinking, but doesnt say. He doesn't want to breech the sex-buddy rules. The last stanza is really what shows his fealings. So, its basically about a guy falling in love with his sex-buddy.

I went to one of their shows and Toby actually explained what this song was about...here it goes

so Toby met this girl. They started hanging out all the time and he began to fall for her. The problem was that Toby soon found out that another guy liked this girl. That other guy was this girls boyfriend. The girl still wanted to spend time with Toby but it was obviously very difficult for him. He wanted to spend time with her but he couldn't because he knew she had feelings for someone else.

So yeah, thats the story behind the song.

I was thinking the same coolestguyever but listening to fractions again opened my eyes a bit more as to the meaning behind it. For instance look how the song starts off- 'one in three you're here
to tell me we can't do this anymore
(one in three, you're here to tell me we can't do this
three for three, I will disagree)' What Toby is saying is the girl (presumably it is a girl) is just 'one' person in a 'three' way relation ship (toby, the girl and the girls boyfriend) also just look at the name of the song 'fractions' or if you like- 1/3. Hope thats helped!

I can see how all of you feel the way you do about this song. Obviously potentially means many different things to different people. However, I think that many of you have looked too hard into this song in search for a different meaning. I think it is simply, like Romes said, a story about a guy who likes a girl, but can't have her, feeling like the odd "third" out. I'm not going to lie tho, I really like the abstinance meaning that many of you found, yet Chriscom, please only post once for now on, reading the same thing 4 times made my head spin.

I think that its kinda a mixture of both. I think that it's a love triangle here, but this girl is with alot of guys and not just with him as badly as he wants to be with her primarily. "One in three you're here to tell me we can't do this anymore." I think one of the other 2 things is to have sex obviously. And I'm not so sure if when he says "people steal from you, they take anything they choose", that definetly has to do with sex. She lets people take what they want from her I also think that it's starting off in the relationship as well. They love being together but he can't decide to go on with it or not because she is hurting him and others. He is in love with her because he is basically begging her to be with him. ("can't decide, then look at the faces ") "you keep coming back disassembled
and I keep losing this fight " I think maybe that could be from fights with other guys or feeling used and she likes the feeling of him comforting her but in the end she leaves again. It's also like they are hiding from the other guys because the line "we know what steps to take to be here" kinda gave that feeling of hiding especially with the lines before of like dancing under starlight....." like they are out somewhere discreet. I don't know once I get on a roll I don't stop. Thats kinda my take after analyzing the words a few hundred times. Thanks.

This song is amazing. I heard my guy friend singing it and the lyrics totally caught my attention. I asked him about it and i got the song and couldn't stop listening to it! Everytime i listen to it, it reminds me of him. We had something on and off for 3 years and its still goin on... really stupid. But it reminds me of him because we always thought our relationship was going to work out, but there were all these things that we needed to figure out and things just weren't working out. Now everytime i hear this song, when it says "people steal from you
they take anything they choose", it reminds me of how he just ripped out my heart and it seems like i'll never get it back.

ok here I am again..
this song is definitely about a "love triangle"...being the last resort in the triangle...he is realizing this girl only comes to him when she's hurt, and he feels like he's putting so much into showing he cares for her, but she only does it temporarily, and knowing she has a boyfriend, she tells him it's not right...but still leads him on...he feels so strongly for her and wants to love her, but she just won't return the feelings whole-heartedly

First of all the line is...We have these mornings where we can't say goodbye not where we can say goodbye. And its my favorite line ever. This song reminds me of someone who i can never say goodbye to in the morning.

This song is about a guy who is falling in love with this girl, but the girl has a boyfriend already. I'll walk you through it step-by-step:

"one in three you are here
to tell me we can't do this anymore
(one in three, you're here to tell me we can't do this
three for three, I will disagree)"

This means 1/3 (1 in 3), she's there telling him they can't do this anymore. (she has a boyfriend). the song is called "Fractions", get it? :)

"your hair and face against the mirror
as i take the steps to save what's left of me
someone's out when it's over"

This is where they are being together, (having sex as well), but he has to hurry up and leave because her boyfriend is on his way. Someone (one of them) will be out, when it's all over.

"it's good to see you
(I missed you last night)"
Last night she had to spend the night with her boyfriend, so he missed her.

before we fall asleep
(I just wanted to say)
this all seems so easy but there are choices to make"
This is him telling the girl before they fall asleep together, that this all seems so easy and everything's fine, but there are choices to make. As in will the girl choose her boyfriend or him?

stay with me now.

"and hurting ourselves with this false start"
they're hurting themselves with this 'false start', and lies and all. bad beginnings.

"resign yourself to always be without the one thing you need"
Resign herself to be without the one thing she needs, him. (if she chooses her boyfriend)

"when we have these mornings where we can say goodbye" --- this is actually supposed to be "CAN'T" say goodbye.

"I wanted to mean everything to you
but this isn't right
you keep coming back disassembled
and I keep losing this fight"
Pretty self-explainatory, he wants to mean everything to this girl, but he knows this isn't right because she has a boyfriend. He keeps losing this fight.

"dancing under starlight glow
no one in the city knows
confidence can take you
when nerves try to shake you
from going all the way
it's not that far"
Actually I do not think this part is about sex, this part, instead, is about them just being romantic together.
They're dancing under the glowing stars, without her boyfriend knowing. Confidence can take her and make her make the right decision (to be with HIM, not the boyfriend), when her nerves try to shake her from leaving her boyfriend for him.

"we watch the tide roll in
(with cold air and coffee cakes)
holding our words at lips
(stopping the sounds they make)
we know the way to go
(we know each steps to take)
to be here"

They know each step to take to get 'here'. (where they can be happy together, without her old boyfriend)
So why can't they get there?

"these words with no reply
stopping we's and starting i's
this need is killing me
and taking me over"
Stopping we's, as in "Yeah we should hang out tomorrow." or "We, my boyfriend and I blah blah blah"

And turning into i's, as in "I love you."

That's my take on this song.

dude that is seriously one of the most stupid things I have ever heard. Animals do a lot of things. Dieing is natural, why do people make such a big deal when people die? Sex is not a sin, extra marital sex is a sin.
