Lyrics for Walls as interpreted by all_is_vanity

Walls Lyrics
Are you listening?
we write a thousand pages
they're torn and on the floor
headlights hammer the windows
were locked behind these doors
and we are never leaving
this place is part of us
and all these scenes repeating
are cold to the touch

my hands seem to deceive me
when I'm nervous or when I'm healthy.
the scenery's all drawn.
they hang here from the walls dear,
painting pictures, bleeding colors,
blanket the windows.
sometimes it gets so hard to breathe.
your eyes can see right through me.
these fights with your arms left beside.
one thing and one more says goodnight.
you've got the map come get to me.
these knuckles break before they bleed.
tear out these veins that own my heart.
this skin that wears your lasting marks.
i've built these walls come get to me, come get to me.
is this your lesson, a slight discretion,
the lines that keep you, the lines that sweep you.
lock the doors from the inside.
your face is so contagious, it wears announcements,
it leaves me breathless, i won't forget this.
let the walls have their say.

there's no conversation
words without remorse
and this television drowns the only source
wake from these dreams of you in my arms
to the staircase where you hold my heart
this place, these walls, mean everything to me.

That's a different way to look at it, cmart1807. I think Emery did intend it to be about a relationship, but I like what you said, offers a new viewpoint.

I think the begining of this song is about the bible- "we write a thousand pages, they're torn and on the floor". it is about how we turn our backs and dont even listen when God tries to speak to us- the headlights are a metaphor for God as they "hammer the windows" of our heart but we just "blanket the windows". He wants us to come out and see the truth, but "we are never leaving" because these walls are our comfort zone.

through the middle of the song he sings about how God can see right through him-- no matter how high he builds his walls. and that god always knows the way to salvation "youve got the map come get to me". he wants god to show him the way.

"these knuckles break before they bleed"-- although he looks fine from the outside, he is broken on the inside. soon enough his unsettled emotions will start to bleed out of him.

my favorite line in this song is when he says "tear out these veins that own my heart"-- veins carry the deoxygenated dark blood back to the heart. meaning that he wants god to take away the coldness and darkness; possibly meaning that he is asking for forgiveness...

contrary to most fans, this was not the first emery song i heard, but it still doesn't stop it from being my favorite! to me, i think the "walls" are emotional walls that people build up around themsleves to prevent getting hurt, but it turns out that having the walls hurts more than not.

by the way, this song is AMAZING live!! i loved it, as soon as toby said "this is our last song, and it's called "walls"", this ocean-like roar erupted from the crowd and the mosh pits looked like swirling masses of human hurricane. IT WAS INCREDIBLE!!!

and, i was just wondering, is anyone else REALLY disapointed with "i'm Only a Man", because i know i am.

I've met Emery in person, and asked Toby about the meaning of this song. He said "Its about a relationship that you can't escape. No matter how hard you try to get out of it."

This song is amazing, one of my favorites of Emery. It is referring at times to having a guard up- becoming resilient to hurtful words or actions.

This song is about a person who locks up their emotions and feelings to protect themself from people that might hurt them. The screaming at the beginning is his/her call for help. "We write a thousand pages" refers to him/her writing in a journal or diary, and then in anger "they're torn and on the floor." The walls that the title refers to are the walls around his/her soul preventing people from knowing their feelings. He/she is violent and angry as a cover for their emotions as referred to "these fights with your arms left behind" and "these knuckles break before they bleed." The 'windows' and 'doors' are the ways into his/her soul, but the windows are blanketed and the doors are locked, so no one can get in. The reason this person doesn't want anyone to see into their soul is because someone they cared about hurt them, probably a boyfriend/girlfriend. But that person still loves him/her
and wants forgiveness. They really care, but the person building the walls won't let them in. He/she is saying "let the walls have their say" meaning that they want the mask of fake emotions they've created to speak for them instead of revealing what they really feel. This is an easy song to relate to for me, cuz this has happened to me. I can totally understand what Emery is talking about.

This is a song about relationships - whether it'd be your relationship with a family member/friend/God/or a significant other is up to your interpretation.

It's about a girl who has built "walls" or barriers in her heart for the soul purpose of protecting herself. When people get hurt by others or by past relationships, they don't know any other way to prevent themselves from hurting again - so they are guarded. Windows represent an opening to the soul - but this person has tried very hard to cover up what's going on in the inside of her.

However, because she doesn't know any other way how to trust or open up, she's crying out for that "someone" to break through that. She wants to love again, she wants to trust again - she doesn't want to be confined into her hurts, but again, she doesn't know any other way to break through and she's hoping that that "someone" will be the one that she can love again and trust again.

The letters and the paintings symbolize the desire to express how she feels and all her feelings, but because she's confined to her walls, she can't open up to this person. When people want to express their "inner" feelings, they write in a journal and/or paint - so it's just a metaphor describing her desire to want to express that love or trust.

The lines that keep you, the lines that sweep you - they symbolize "borders" and boundaries on how far she'll go in that relationship or trust. Locking the doors from the inside is an indication that it's her choice and she's confined herself in this place where she feels she's unreachable.

The person cares for this girl, whoever that person is. He know that there's something in there and there's a glimmer of hope that this person is the one who will help her open up. She's like "Uhm, should I trust? Should I?" That's why she says at the end, "These walls mean everything to me!" Meaning that if she leaves the walls behind, she's vulnerable to hurt again - a place she's unwilling to go to again - and that scares her to know that.

i think this song is about spousal abuse or abuse in the relationship. i catch a drift of drug involvement and the only thing that knows the truth to the dilemma is the walls that surround them during there spats. seems that its getting to the point where all is beginning to fall and all thats left to know is the walls.

emery was absolutely amazing at warped tour in jacksonville 2006. the keyboardist was throwing out his keyboard over the audience and there performance and quality was absolutely up to par with the c.d versions. 2 Points emery

What does this song mean to me? hmmm *thinking* I have to agree with thevivtim right now cause it's like 3:30am and my head hurts. lol But no seriously he put it perfect...sometimes we can build walls around us so we're not totally exposed, especially if we're hiding something. But at the same time, we get so tired of living in those walls we just want to break free and stop living within them. That's more of a personal interpretation cause I was once in that place...isolated in my own little world, in my own comfort zone, which wasn't good cause I was hiding from everyone else and I hated not having fellowship with anyone else, so I basically broke free by just stepping out cause I was sick of it!

And yeah you become exposed more, but now, I'd rather be free from any walls and have friends, then be a prisoner in my own walls and be a loner, cause it was just a very lonely, miserable life to me.

it's about how people build walls and not let anyone see inside their hearts, because they're tired of being hurt because they aloud themselves to be vulnerable.

and eventually how you get trapped inside your own walls. you love them, and you feel attached to them because it they're torn down your left totally exposed.
but you hate them and you want out because your basically a prisoner.

all_is_vanity, I like your interpretation.

What I got from it was basically putting barriers around yourself to protect one from emotional harm. The line "Come get to me" was more like "Just TRY to" in my opinion. All in all a very, very well sung/performed/awesome song.

This song is a representation of a past relationship. The beginning of the song starts out as:

"we write a thousand pages
they're torn and on the floor
headlights hammer the windows
were locked behind these doors
and we are never leaving
this place is part of us
and all these scenes repeating
are cold to the touch"

This is a recolection of someone's past with someone they loved. The pages that are torn on the floor are the bad memories that are locked in their heart. Then the song goes on about the scenery and such, which I think is talking about the efforts this person has made to try to cover up the memories of his past love, but it gets hard to breathe because the feelings are so overwhelming.

"you've got the map come get to me.
these knuckles break before they bleed.
tear out these veins that own my heart.
this skin that wears your lasting marks.
i've built these walls come get to me, come get to me."

Obviously, the person has built up walls to guard their heart, and the one person they want to tear them down has known how the entire time. Their knuckles would rather break before bleed because blood is so much more real, therefore the veins need to be torn out which encircle their heart. The last person to touch the person building the walls is the person who broke their hearts and they're bluntly saying that they want the other person to try to fix things instead of running away and feeling like theyre fighting with a mannequin.

This song is full of passion and dedication, and the lyrics are beautifully written. It can be interpereted many ways, but I honestly think it's about a broken heart. If not for a love interest, someone beloved that was definately loved and cherished.

alright forget my idea. haha i re-read Cbrownie's and yea i agree with that but i still do like the idea with the line
"you've got the map come get to me."
Maybe he wants the so called "loved one" to come in and comfort him and tell him everything is alright or something along those lines.

I really agree with Cbrownie and i also think its like a test with like the line "you've got the map come get to me." i think its like a test to the girl to see if she will be able to find him. I'm not totally sure though.
