Life is but a dream
Drifting on a stream, a stream
Consciously it seems
All of what remains

Ego brain
That makes shame, shame love after it rains

You see my pain is real
Watch my world dissolve
and pretend that none of us see the fall
As I turn to sand
you took me by the hand
and declared that love prevails over all

I am just a man
Fighting other man for land, for land
while I turn to sand
In spite of the pain

Ego brain
That makes shame, shame love after it rains

You see my pain is real
Watch my world dissolve
and pretend that none of us see the fall
As I turn to sand
you took me by the hand
and declared that love prevails over all

All of what remains

Ego brain
That makes shame, shame love after it rains

You see my pain is real
Watch my world dissolve
and pretend that none of us see the fall
As I turn to sand
you took me by the hand
and declared that love prevails over all

(Love after it rains)

My Interpretation:What it means to me is how our egos are supplemented by a materialistic society, and every single one of us eventually fall and break down under the stress of what we are forced to base our lives off of. And when we break, the people that truly love us don't point out our meltdowns, but help us build ourselves back up. Because love really does prevail everything.

Song Meaning:In my opinion, this song is about Solipsism. It's the belief that nothing can be sure to exist but one's mind, and that everything can be fake. It could be a dream, it could be us having a stroke, it can be anything but real, except our only mind. Hence, Ego-brain.
It says so in the first line,

    "Life is but a dream
Drifting on a stream, a stream
    Consciously it seems
    All of what remains"

There are other things in the lyrics that point in that direction, such as

"You see my pain is real
    Watch my world dissolve"

That could be the moment one realises the world they're in is fake, that everything was a lie except his mind, that can still feel.

I could delve into this further, but i'd be forcing the meaning. I hope this was hopeful.

Song Meaning:I really regret when the lyrics are so clear and you people, not critics, just try to tell something out of you a**.

This song, as everybody reading and criticizing System Of A Down knows, it about the hatred toward humankind and the "SYSTEM" and being sarcastic about the existence of god. Load and clear!

General Comment:I'm surprised no one has commented on a possible reference to the Bible story of Sodom and Gomorrha. SOAD has been known to quote biblical passages in the past, so I think this may be another one of those. In the story, God chooses to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha with some kind of fire raining from the heavens because the people in the towns are apparently very sinful. He tells this man (named Lot) and his wife to leave before he destroys it and to never look back. In the end of the story, Lot's wife turns around as the town is being destroyed and God turns her into a pillar of sand. (For what reason, I am not sure)

I just figured I'd bring that up because of the lines:
"You see my pain is real
    Watch my world dissolve
and pretend that none of us see the fall
    As I turn to sand
you took me by the hand
and declared that love prevails over all"

They seem to be mocking the blind faith in the apparent justification of the destruction of two entire cities. Lot's wife turns back and feels some kind of empathy for the people being destroyed and is severely punished because she did not want to turn a blind eye towards the destruction. Lot just continues on following God and chooses to ignore yet another dead by the hands of "God".

I believe this is just another SOAD anti-war song as they insult those religious fanatics who somehow believe that "just" wars are possible and are somehow a way to spread love.

General Comment:when i read the title i think of a brain or conscience that has no feelings about anything but itself.

Ego, is greek for "I" and the brain controls our conscience and body (actions and feelings)

the song seems hard to understand, but because of all the references to the "My", "Me" and "I" then how they saw "you took me by the hand and declared that love previals over all" it seems as though someone forcefully grabbed this person and should them or had done something that open their eyes made them realize that there is more to life then just them selves but it took something painful to show them that. Maybe something as painful as their world dissolving right before their eyes.

then after someone can "watch my world dissolve" they they no that "my pain is real"

"fighting another man for land for land", well obviously this man is being greedy and when being greedy your only thinking of oneself....

but given system's reputation for writing political songs and songs about the world i think that it is safe to say that they are singing about war, or maybe just greed of the world/soul.

if the song is about war it sounds that the government only thinks of themselves and it is the people who speak up, protest and riot, that forcefully make the government realize that they should be worried about the love of the nations people more then personal finance.

if the song is speaking about greed of the world and the soul we should see that it basically says sometimes in order to see what really matters to us, or the the things that should really be important to us are not easily spotted, but we must suffer a great fall in order to see what we really have....

General Comment:Don't rule out the fact that this could be about drugs just because you don't want it to or you don't know anything about them. To me this song is about ego death during an acid trip. You think introspectively and you learn a lot about yourself. Sometimes you question traits of your personality and I think that's what he's doing in this song.
