Lyrics for Golden as interpreted by sarahsavedlatin

Golden Lyrics
watchin' a stretch of road
miles of light explode
driftin' off a thing
i'd never done before

watchin' a crowd roll in
out go the lights, it begins
a feelin' in my bones
i never felt before

mmm...
people always told me
that bars are dark & lonely
and talk is often cheap & filled with air
sure, sometimes they thrill me
but nothin' could ever chill me
like the way they make the time
just disappear

feelin' you here again
hot on my skin again
feelin' good
a thing i'd never known before

what does it mean to feel?
millions of dreams come real
a feelin' in my soul
i'd never felt before

mmm...
and you always told me
no matter how long it holds me
if it falls apart or makes us millionaires
you'll be right here forever
we'll go thru this thing together
and on heaven's golden shore
we'll lay our heads

I'm surprised this song has not been more exposed, it's one of the most touching, reflective songs i've ever heard, and on my top 100 of best songs of all time, which is a pretty damn hard list to break into.

oh and it's nothing like wanted dead or alive, if you want something to compare it to, think Neil Young's Harvest Moon or Heart of Gold.

My God this is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. I'm happy to say the first time I had sex this song was playing.

It is love, it is beauty, it is that first time feeling. I feel sorry for anyone who hasn't heard this song. Hell, I remember where I was the first time I heard this song, it's that good. Musically, lyrically, presentation/performance-wise, it is stunning. I remember the golden sunlight breaking through the bright green trees, her golden hair, the first time I saw the sun...

just like it was said before this song is beauty, everything about it is perfect for me to see it as one of the most touching songs i ever heard. singing along to it sometimes make my eyes water and forget about all other pain and problems. other songs are touching like this one from mmj to me, for example, where to begin, i will sing you songs, death is the easy way, the way that he sings, dondante, bermuda highway, steam engine, i will be there when you die, phone went west, come closer, how do you know, one in the same. thats just a fantastic set of beautiful songs to come from just one band. keep playing mmj, you have something special going on.

It sounds like it's his first time out on a big tour.. and whether it's make-or-break, he's got a special someone who is going to love him no matter what happens.

To me it is talking about life. Life is a road, there is a lot of light and hope ahead of you. You grow up and get older and the world gets smaller. You aren't alone anymore, but for some reason things just seem more bleak and depressing.
The middle of the song he realizes that everyone was right when they said life was hell, life is a prison, even though before he wouldn't admit it.
Suddenly he finds something to brighten his life again, a person. His world is lit up anew because of love.

I think this is one of Jim James' more literal songs.

The first 2 verses are obviously about touring. Images of the road, watching the audience arrive, "the lights go out it begins". He then mentions bars and roadhouses, a staple of any young mans touring itinerary, and talks about how much fun they could be (sure sometimes it thrill me), but he's also quick to learn that its not all its cracked up to be, and that it can get lonely (but nother could ever chill me/the way they make the time just disappear).

In the next verse its quite clear he's talking about an intimate relationship. And while I dont know (nor would I wish to know) the details of James personal life it sounds as if he is in love for the first time (feelin' good/a thing ive never known before)

the next verse is my favorite, and serves to tie the song together. So far we've covered the ups and downs of touring and the beauty of new love. Now he combines the two. Although touring takes him from his significant other she has reassured him that she will stay by his side, and that she will wait for him for as long as his drive to create music is present, regardless of the outcome or level of success (no matter how long it holds me/if it falls apart or makes us millionaires/you'll be right here forever/go through this thing together).

What I love about this part is that James' already acknowledges that he may or may not "make it big", but regardless of the outcome they will lay their heads "on heavens golden shore". So the true prize, the true success, is being together, and no amount of success or failure will change that. Thats a beautiful sentiment.

Good God, I love this band...

TennesseeFire, you nailed it, and very eloquently too I might add.

One part I always identified with that wasn't really part of the song's original message was "people always told me that bars are dark and lonely..."

It's something a lot of people can relate too, not just touring musicians. Like how after your 21st birthday, you want to go out to the bar night after night as much as you can, but a few years go by and you start to become tired of spending all your waking nights there. Eventually they stop being this new and exciting thing and they just end up making "the time disappear."

Like I said, not the main focus of the song, but it's something I related to when I heard that part.
