Dude, this song is like awesome. I'm a singer, and hope to one day do this one when I can convince the choir director to let me and a couple of my friends. And the meaning is like so pure. I have known you for so long and haven't felt this way in just as long, if not longer. I don't know where this might lead, but despite any consequences that may be, I'm going to follow my heart. Simple as that.

it seems as if he's at the "peak" of his relationship.. *sigh* that's always a great feeling. =D i love this song, and it's even more fun to sing with my friends in small chorus. =]

This was the first song I really fell in love with, and learned the lyrics to. I was about 3 years old, and I think back then I knew what the song meant. Something like finding love after being alone for a long time...

well this song is amazing, its so amzing. the song is almost certainly about billy joel's cat "uncle kevin" who he named after his late uncle (Otis) who is now dead. The song basically tells the story of uncle kevin the cat who on a monday evening go's out for a strol and is hit by a car.

Billy joels for the longest time is an extremely interesting song because originally the song was going to be called “for the longest LINE” as billy joel was an extremely accomplished mathematician he was captivated by the wonderful “line” and its design. He then decided to try his best to write a really good song about the line and its creation I have managed to get a copy of part of the original version :

Seriously, its pretty much a love song to Christie B. About how he hasn't felt this way for so long, he forgot how wonderful it feels, and even if it doesn't last he will cherish the feeling now.

I remember this song playing when I was like 5 and me and my later to be crush, were playing in the snow. He was pretty much babysitting me, seeing as how he would've been 12. But Wow. I'm 17 now and stll cry every time I hear this, because it reminds me of innocent times.

We were supposed to sing this in choir one year (I had the bass part), but most of the guys in the choir were only there to hang out with their girlfriends, and the song was scrapped due to our inability to wrap our vocal cords around it. Or because the choir director was a jerk, I'm not sure which.

To me, it alost sounds like the relationship is over too--"If you said goodbye to me tonight...", "maybe this won't last very long...". And why does he say "how much I need you"--which is in the present tense--"...and how you needed me too," in the past tense? Is he suggesting that he still loves her, but she doesn't need him anymore?

It almost sounds, to me, like it's not just about being happy to be in love; there's an edge of desperation to it saying "you can see how happy you make me, so please don't leave me". I heard a rumor that this was written to Christine B. to try and avert their breakup, and it worked for another 10 years--which would explain the sense of doubt and seperation to it. Dunno if that's true, though.
