Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
I am grey, still on the page
Oh colour me in
Just an outline, sketchy but fine
Oh colour me in
If green is chasing the hills over miles
If blue is pursuing the sky
See if the red of your heart doesn't mind
Where you begin to colour me in
Something new and nothing to do
Then I'm just the idea
I must be real, 'cause somehow I feel
That I'm just the idea
Let's share the blue of the towering sky
The green of the hills that roll by
Leave the red of your heart to decide
If you cannot choose which colour to use
I'll always wait, it's never too late
To colour me in
To colour me in
Today or next year, I'll always be here
If you want to colour me in
Oh colour me in
Just an outline, sketchy but fine
Oh colour me in
If green is chasing the hills over miles
If blue is pursuing the sky
See if the red of your heart doesn't mind
Where you begin to colour me in
Something new and nothing to do
Then I'm just the idea
I must be real, 'cause somehow I feel
That I'm just the idea
Let's share the blue of the towering sky
The green of the hills that roll by
Leave the red of your heart to decide
If you cannot choose which colour to use
I'll always wait, it's never too late
To colour me in
To colour me in
Today or next year, I'll always be here
If you want to colour me in

Plastic Bag

Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
lovely
This song always puts me in another place. When I first heard this song I imagined a person, or the concept of a person, incomplete and in the mind. This person is perfection, and the details are filled in by you;("I am gray, still on the page/Just an outline, sketchy but fine"). It's like this person's rough existence is there, but incomplete. She is real, but only in your mind;("I must be real cause somehow I feel/That I'm just the ideal") She is subjective perfection in your mind, and that gives her life and proves that she is real. When she says "I'll always wait, it's never too late...Today or next year, I'll always be here, if you want to color me in" that could be taken as, you can take all the time you need to figure out what perfection is for you. To fill in the picture of perfection with color eventually, and have it someday. It is the living, subconscious dream of perfection that we all have, be it a person, a beautiful place, a meaning, or state of being. We need to set the ideal, and set out to find it.
She's simply inviting you to get to know her better. "You" could be an acquaintance, a family member, or whatever. Or maybe it's sung from the perspective of her deeper, truer self, addressing her conscious self. Either way, the listener has a limited, abstracted perception of the speaker's authentic qualities. There are people all around us, in our lives, that we only see as "sketchy outlines" in a coloring book, when in fact they're just as real and colorful and 3d as we are. "I'll always wait/ it's never too late" = if you want to get to know me, I'll be here; all you need to do is let your emotions get out and mix with mine ("leave the red of your heart to decide") and then you will have CONNECTED WITH ANOTHER HUMAN BEING WHICH AFTER ALL IS WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT.
If anything, this song confirms that Trish (RIP) was a huge talent as well as (probably) a huge stoner.
Oh and a lyric correction right before the last paragraph:
I am grey, still on the page
Oh colour me in
Just an outline, sketchy but fine
Oh colour me in
If green is chasing the hills over miles
If blue is pursuing the sky
See if the red of your heart doesn't mind
Where you begin to colour me in
Something new and nothing to do
Then I'm just the ideal
I must be real cause somehow I feel
That I'm just the ideal
Let's share the blue of the towering sky
The green of the hills that roll by
Leave the red of your heart to decide
If you cannot choose which colour to use
I'll always wait, it's never too late
To colour me in
To colour me in
Today or next year, I'll always be here
If you want to colour me...
In........
I'll always wait, it's never too late
To colour me in
To colour me in
To colour me in
