Lyrics for Death of an Interior Decorator as interpreted by heartattack

Death of an Interior Decorator Lyrics
You were the mother of three girls so sweet
That storm through your turnstile, and climbed to the street
But after conception, your body lay cold
Withered through autumn then you found yourself old

Can you tell me why have been so sad
He took a lover on a far away beach
While you arranged flowers and chose color schemes

Can you tell me why you have been so sad?
Can you tell me why you have been so sad?

The girls were all there; they traded their vows
The youngest one glared with furrowed brow
As they tenderly kissed and cut the cake
The bride then tripped and broke the vase
The one you thought would span the years
So perfectly placed below the mirror
Arriving late, you clean the debris
And walked into the angry sea
It felt just like falling in love again
And it felt just like falling in love again

Can you tell me why you have been so sad?
Can you tell me why you have been so . . . .

It's obvious - the story this song is trying to tell. The interesting thing I've heard is that its all based on the plot of some movie---which movie? I don't know...still trying to find it.

It reminds me a lot of the book The Awakening by Kate Chopin. At the end of the book the main character walks into the sea and commits suicide for freedom from her husband and children. It's a lot like this because it doesn't seem like a cowerdly surrender but more like she is liberated by this action. Just like how the song says "and it felt just like falling in love again."

The movie this song is about is called "Interiors," and it's directed by the godly Woody Allen.

The movie Interiors is absolutely beautiful. Once youve seen the movie the song makes a lot more sense.

Basically, it's just saying that falling in love hurts.
"Arriving late, you clean the debris
and walked into the angry sea;
It felt just like falling in love again."
Her daughter broke the vase, it was prefectly placed, and her she had to clean it up. Falling in love hurts during and after...why do you think they call it "falling" anyway?
well..that's what I think it's saying anyway. eh, but i could be wrong. :\
i like it.

FirstKissLoser - I have to disagree. the line "It felt just like falling in love again" is about suicide.. to quote ben gibbard, "the (suicide-related) lyric was meant to express that everything is new, that you're beginning a new chapter and ending a chapter that's just too painful to move though. love can be like that when you have it and lose it and you that nothing will ever be right again..."

when he sings "...and walked into the angry sea..." hes describing the very last scene in the movie Interiors, when the mother commits suicide by drowning herself.

I think this is about someone dying during child birth and then having an ugly home because she decorated it and she died.

Its about wondering what your life really is. She's not really sure if she has a purpose but she tries by having children and decorating to ignore that feeling. Finally all the kids are grown and she has nothing left but the emptiness which started it all. Yes. it's about suicide but it's not about hating life it's embracing it even if you're not sure what for yet.

I love the first stanza: "You were the mother of three girls so sweet
That storm through your turnstile, and climbed to the street
But after conception, your body lay cold
Withered through Autumn then you found yourself old"

Such great imagery, it conveys so much in just a few lines. Slightly disturbing to refer to a woman's womb as a turnstile, but I love it none the less.

Interesting how its probably about the movie..I want to see it now! When I first heard it i thought it was about a woman more interested in controling things that are just materialistic...and then losing whats important...and denying the truth with the line "he took a lover on a faraway beach, while you arranged flowers and chose color schemes"

I think that this song is definitely about a book.
When I first heard it, I immediately thought of "The Poisonwood Bible" by Kingsolver. The "three girls so sweet" and "you arranged flowers" parts both relate to the mother character in that story, but most of the rest doesn't.
Very good book though. Maybe an even better song.

this song reminds me of my grandma, it's so sad. my grandma's story is a bit different though, her daughter died, (which was my mom). but when i listen to the words it's like, what i'm hearing is that htis lady has three girls, and they are growing up and she is starting the next process of her life, she's starting to age. she has no husband, whereever he may be we don't know. and yeah tehre are some thoughts of suicide, whcih is typical among older people. not to be sexist, but women to decorate a lot, and i imagine that this lady now living in an empty house w/ all her three daughters out of the house, she decorates to hide her emptiness. she's lonley.

I love that last verse, where the bride breaks the vase, and the decorator freaks out. And it's just like love.....

This is based on Woody Allen's film Interiors and more specifically the character played by the FABULOUS Geraldine Page. The scene where "she arrives late to clean the debris" is haunting. To me this song is for anyone who has struggled to love someone who clearly doesn't share that same love. It's a devastating feeling and sends Mrs. Page's character into the angry sea at the end. By far my favorite Woody Allen film even though I love most of his work. It is his only dramatic piece and is truly gutwrenching.

i always thought this song was talking about how everything is so perfect, (the perfect vase) and once its broken, it felt just like falling in love again. because everything got so much more less expectational and flawed, it was love. just a thought.

but my favorite part of the song which is absolutely beautiful..

"it felt just like falling in love again.."

I'm curious who "They traded their vows" is refering too. If "they" means the mother who was previously being refered to in Second person "you"...then it is no wonder this song is confusing. That's why I am leaded to believe(based off of lyrics) that 'They' should have been refering to a daughter being married. I love his lyrics and it would be sad if he made such a foul 'speaker' error; As to make the actual meaning unfound in the lyrics.
