I've got a hunger
Twisting my stomach into knots
That my tongue is tied off
My brain's repeating "If you've got an impulse, let it out"
But they never make it past my mouth
Bop bah, this is the sound of settling
Bop bah, bop bah
Bop bah, this is the sound of settling
Bop bah, bop bah
Our youth is fleeting
Old age is just around the bend
And I can't wait to go grey
And I'll sit and wonder of every love that could have been
If I'd only thought of something charming to say
Bop bah, this is the sound of settling
Bop bah, bop bah
Bop bah, this is the sound of settling
Bop bah, bop bah
Bop bah, this is the sound of settling
Bop bah, bop bah
Bop bah, this is the sound of settling
Bop bah, bop bah
I've got a hunger
Twisting my stomach into knots
Twisting my stomach into knots
That my tongue is tied off
My brain's repeating "If you've got an impulse, let it out"
But they never make it past my mouth
Bop bah, this is the sound of settling
Bop bah, bop bah
Bop bah, this is the sound of settling
Bop bah, bop bah
Our youth is fleeting
Old age is just around the bend
And I can't wait to go grey
And I'll sit and wonder of every love that could have been
If I'd only thought of something charming to say
Bop bah, this is the sound of settling
Bop bah, bop bah
Bop bah, this is the sound of settling
Bop bah, bop bah
Bop bah, this is the sound of settling
Bop bah, bop bah
Bop bah, this is the sound of settling
Bop bah, bop bah
I've got a hunger
Twisting my stomach into knots

I think this sound is about being passive-aggressive to a degree in a relationship. Maybe also a shade of self-doubt regarding actually being happy in a committed relationship. The line "I've got a hunger/ twisting my stomach into knots" could mean that he is not getting what he needs, but is too afraid to impulsively express his need for more of a particular relationship component that he is lacking.
I relate to this interpretation, myself. I have noticed that a lot of Death Cab songs are relevant to long-term relationships, cooling of passions, aging, and the realization of inevitable death.
I love this song but give me a break: "...long therm relationships, cooling of passions, aging, and the realization of inevitable death." Man, what a downer you're on with this. I do love the song and enjoy the band, but I believe you are jaded by perhaps your personal experiences which may very well not be another's. Passion does not cool, it mearly changes. (On my personal note, prior to marriage I had lustful sex and I've had sex in a long-term relationship, and the best sex was the latter due to love and trust and wanting to please the person you adore.)
