The Atlantic was born today, and I'll tell you how
The clouds above opened up and let it out
I was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere
When the water filled every hole
And thousands upon thousands made an ocean
Making islands where no islands should go (oh no)

Most people were overjoyed; they took to their boats
I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat
The rhythm of my footsteps crossing flatlands to your
Door have been silenced forevermore
And the distance is quite simply much to far for me to row;
It seems farther than ever before (oh no)

I need you so much closer

So come on; come on

    General Comment:I think this song is about the death of a loved one.
    It reminds me of Tennyson's In Memoriam

    General Comment:This song makes me want to cry. They can't be together because of a hard difficult distance. They both love each other but don't say it. They need each other so much closer.

    My Interpretation:I don't think this song is so much about the obvious physical distance between two lovers, but rather, it is a lament about the imagined gap between lovers as their passion decays into a one-sided love affair.

    Perhaps the couple were really close before, but as time went by they distanced apart from one another. The author probably still feels strongly for his lover, but he may no longer be of a thing to her anymore. Confused as to how the relationship has turned sour just like that, he describes the incredulous description of the formation of the entire Atlantic Ocean with just a mere rainstorm.

    'I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat'. A body of water, but when defined as a moat, there is a clear indication that this imagined 'body of water' (of which the whole song revolves around) is installed as an intended preventive measure to stop the author from advancing, and most likely, advancing towards her.

    And finally, towards the end of the song, we hear the author giving in; 'And the distance is quite simply much to far for me to row;
    It seems farther than ever before (oh no)' This gap, be it physical or imagined, may represent how relationships turn awkward after series of trauma and negligence. And sometimes, the distance truly becomes 'farther than ever before', so much so that it really is 'simply much to far for me to row', too much for me to overcome.

    Yes, the author may have admitted defeat. Yes, the author may know that there wouldn't be a future where the both of them are together. But still, he needs her. He yearns for her. Both the repetitive guitar riff and Ben's repetition of "i need you so much closer" highlights how much he still desires for her to be by his side, and yet, ironically, he is entirely aware that they will not be together anymore.

    My Interpretation:This is one of my favorite songs because it is so emotional and easy to relate to. To me, it isn't about physical distance, but emotional distance in a relationship. "The Atlantic was born today, and I'll tell you how"...He uses the theme of water throughout the entire song to represent distance and he is saying that he is about to explain what went wrong in the relationship. To me the lines "The clouds above opened up and let it out...Making islands where no islands should go" is referring to when things start going wrong and the couple starts getting on each others' nerves, the clouds opening up, and causing fights when they really aren't necessary (making islands...small, lonely places or it could be disturbances in the flat water surface...where no islands should go). The line that gets me is "I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat" which is basically saying he is seeing this new water not as a way to get places (a lake), but as a way to keep others out (a moat). "And the distance is quite simply much to far for me to row; It seems farther than ever before" is showing that they have had issues with feeling distant in the past, but this time it just seems too much and as though they have become so far from each other that it is too much work to even try to get closer again. But then my other favorite line, "I need you so much closer" is showing that he is still trying to work and wants to be together despite how difficult it is. And finally "So come on" is his last plea, saying he is willing if she is...so come on, do this with me, let's make this work, just love me. Another wonderful Death Cab song that doubles as a depressing love song and can invoke so many emotions depending on your mood/situation.

    My Interpretation:To me this song isn’t about a long distance relationship at all but rather a person who is in love with someone who doesn’t feel the same way. The beginning of the song is describing the way he felt when he realized he was in love with her. The line “making islands where no islands should go, oh no.” is saying to me that he knows she doesn’t feel the same way but he is using islands as a metaphor for hope. The repeated line “I need you so much closer” means to me that he wants their relationship to be closer, like how you can be sitting right next to a person and still feel so far away because you want your relationship to be so much more. And then “so come on” he is pleading to her, come on. Lets do this.

    General Comment:I'm still floored after hearing this band for the first time. They just closed their concert tonight with this particular song. Obvious song meaning. I just cannot place the band; the vocals and the band's sound reminds me of another. Regardless, how have I missed this band; it's excellent!

    General Comment:its a relationship song. of course distance. Or it could closer than it is. Distance in area or feelings...? Hm why don't we find out?

    The clouds above opened up and let it out

    does anyone else feel this was a metaphor for crying?

    basically, hes saying he cried enough to fill the atlantic, since he finally let it all out, and thousands upon thousands of tears made an ocean

    General Comment:to me this song is what happens when love and good times are in the air. But to me the singer is in love, but his lover won't have it. Sad lol. I need you so much closer is him thinking it'd be nice to have you so much closer. I just naturally feel close to you. So yeah. is that to much to ask for when you feel all you want is to be close to someone?

    My Interpretation:When I hear this song, it makes me think about when you have someone who is a very good friend of yours that you've fallen in love with, but they don't love you back, so it's as though, no matter how much you're around them or if you're sitting right next to them, you yearn for a much deeper mental and physical closeness with them, and so you have this feeling and these thoughts of "I need you so much closer."
    "I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat." Instead of feeling that their friendship is a blessing, it just makes you upset and sad.
    "The rhythm of my footsteps crossing flatlands to your
    Door have been silenced forevermore.
    And the distance is quite simply much too far for me to row;
    It seems farther than ever before." As time goes on, your friendship fades: you start visiting them less and talking and being with them less just as a way of trying to avoid the terrible feeling you get when you're around them, because as time went on your negative feelings leaked into the friendship, and the distance between you just seemed to grow.
    I know that's not how everyone will feel about the song, but this is just my interpretation based off of my own personal experiences. It's a beautiful and heartbreaking song that I can relate to due to some stuff that's been going on with me lately.
