Behold the fishnet slut tonight
Hustle Rose goes from limb to limb
Fingertip to painted lip she sways her way up to him
Says, â??Now that your wallet is all lit up
Now that your wallet is all lit up [Repeats]
You're gonna want to wear it outâ??

If you're looking for something life-like
Hit a sardine nightclub
If every surface you touch is cold
Never go home
He says, â??I can't feel a thing, my dreams are so tight
Why wouldn't I stand in line tonight?â??

Now that your wallet is all lit up
You're gonna want to wear it out
You're gonna want to wear it out

You could throw me a bone
If I get too close you wake me up
remind me softly to go
If I forget won't you wake me up
Remind me not to feel a thing
Keep the dream tight
I can't feel a thing
My dreams are so tight
Why wouldn't I stand in line tonight?

General Comment:Behold the fishnet slut tonight, Hustle Rose goes from limb to limb

Hustle Rose is a stripper, looking for a customer, going from one man's arm to another

Fingertip to painted lip, she sways her way up to him

-She's trying to entice him, make him want to pay for a private dance

Says, Now that your wallet is all lit up, you're gonna wanna wear it out

-Potentially a double entendre about his arousal/desire for her. Hustle is very confident in herself. You've seen me and you want what I have to offer. You're going to want to wear your wallet out I'm so good.

If you're looking for something life-like hit a sardine night-club

-Kind of a cocky line from Hustle, still trying to make the sale. She's better than normal girls. If you want a real, boring girl, go to some packed nightclub

If every surface you touch is cold, never go home

-Nothing/no one else in life is making him happy, satisfying him, so she says stay here and let her make him happy

He says, I can't feel a thing, my dreams are so tight

-His dreams are being stretched to the limit, and he feels like he's starting to feel like he can't achieve them, like his life his leaving his control, leaving him apathetic

Why wouldn't I stand in line tonight?

-It's not like it matters what distraction he chooses, none of it is what he wants. It's just a fleeting form of escape from what he feels is a desolate reality, and ultimately meaningless. Why should he stay here?

Now that your wallet is all lit up, you're gonna wanna wear it out

-I've piqued your interest, you're going to want to see what I can do for you, spend your money on me, escape through me. She's almost commanding him.

You could throw me a bone
If I get too close, you wake me up,
    Remind me, softly, to go

-This isn't really being said out loud, more of an understanding between Hustle and the patron. If I get too close (emotionally or physically, I'm not sure) cut me some slack and tell me to leave/discard those feelings. It's a moment of vulnerability and sympathy between Hustle and the patron.

If I forget, won't you wake me up
Remind me not to feel a thing
    Keep the dream tight

-If I become placated with this meaningless get-away, remind me it's not real, remind me not to feel like this is what I want. Encourage me to keep the dream alive (held tight).

I can't feel a thing, my dreams are so tight
Can't feel anything, my dreams are so tight

-He's back in reality, where his dreams are being pulled almost out of his grasp.

Why wouldn't I stand in line tonight?

-Regret. Why wouldn't I just stand in line at the sardine nightclub instead of wearing out my wallet? I'm back where I started. Hustled by Hustle Rose.

General Comment:Sorry for coming off as maybe cold - but i think its fairly obvious what this song is about, not that it wasnt done in a very creative way. The opening verse and choruses are the prostitute's marketing, which pins her as fairly detached and maybe insensitive, which I find adds a sense of gloom and sadness to her character. the second and third verse are in the perspective of the male buyer, who has trouble separating his dreams from reality ("keep the dreams tight / I cant feel anything my dreams are so tight"), indicating some sense of dispair in that he's kind of hopeless in that hes trying to keep his fantasies distinguished from reality, when part of him does not want to. This directly goes back to the prostitute, whos job is based off of that issue - providing a fantasy in paid-for sex, an illusion of a real relationship, that 'hey why shouldn't I stand in line tonight?' or what could be seen as both waiting for the prostitute or a declaration of 'why do I need to be realistic'? the prostitute's ability to feed off of this man's sorrow in a disconnect of reality shows she is in some way able to relate with him.

General Comment:I can't believe how many people keep blindly reapeating "hooker". Just because a girl uses a guy for his money it doesn't mean that she is a hooker. Clearly she is not. Hookers don't hustle. Gosh.

My Interpretation:What it's really about in my own opinion is this wealthy yet lonely man trying to fill up the empty space in his life with material possesions. He gets a paycheck (wallet is all lit up) then goes and spends it on drugs, hookers, and nightclubs ( a "sardine nightclub" is a popular nightclub that is packed full, like a can of sardines). The "why wouldn't I stand in line tonight" lyric isn't reffering to waiting in line for a prostitute, it's reffering to waiting in line for a nightclub, as he has nothing else to do, nothing else to keep him alive. The line about the prostitute ( you can throw me a bone) I think is either the man speaking or alternating lines. Either way, it's about the man trying not to attach himself to this random prostitute, as he knows it should be temporary. Yet, he cannot control his primal urges of "loving" her ( as in beyond sex), as he has no one else to love.

    General Comment:"Why wouldn’t I stand in line tonight? "
the key-sentence of the song .
There's always a reason behind everything you do. Contious, or subcontious motives(..or just a wacky morals :) ). Anyway, this song is such a bittersweet, because it justifies something considered "immoral". Another great song from Metric.
    Musically - perfectly structured!

My Interpretation:I think Hustle Rose is definitely in the POV of the man. Hustle Rose is, in my opinion, a prostitute soliciting the man, who's obviously looking for something at the Sardine Nightclub, which probably means it's packed with people looking for women like Hustle Rose.

"Now that your wallet is all lit up, you're gonna wanna wear it out"

I think this line means that now that you've worked hard for your money, you're going to want to spend it on the prostitute, and wear it out.

Obviously, the song is about how the man has broken from the monotony of his tight work dreams, into the monotony of loose prostitutes, and how he's fallen for a prostitute in particular, Hustle Rose.

You could throw me a bone
If I get too close you wake me up
    remind me softly to go
If I forget won’t you wake me up
Remind me not to feel a thing
    Keep the dream tight
    I can’t feel a thing
    My dreams are so tight

I think these lines are saying that he doesn't want to leave Hustle Rose when it's done and over, and go back to the monotony of his tight dreamed life.

Or at least that's how I see it. :)

General Comment:i think this song is about a regular girl and her feelings towards men. the beginning of the song shows what she does at the beginning of the night, which is using men for drinks.
eventually she goes home with him and she wakes up and and regrets what she did. but at the same time she can't stop doing it, it's all she knows with men.

General Comment:I dont think the songs about a prostitute it sounds to me like somone who goes out and goes with alot of guys. They've fallen in love with one of them but they know they cant get too close because they have been in the same situation so many times that they don't belive in love anymore or let themselves believe that it could be something real.
it's about how each time your let down you trust people less and less untill finally you don't believe in love anymore atall.
the song seems so relevent to my life it scares me.

General Comment:I always thought 'Hustle Rose' was the name of the girl... and that essentially the song is about escapism.
