Lyrics for Boot Stamping On A Human Face Forever as interpreted by Aerion

Boot Stamping On A Human Face Forever Lyrics
“Drop dead, it doesn’t matter,” she said
“It only hurts when I laugh,” she said
“Sometimes it’s never a crime
“To spend the day in bed”
She made certain that the curtains were red
To drape better by the light they would shed
She leaned back, tilted her head
And this is what she said…

“You can’t win; think it over again
“I can’t win; look at the trouble I’m in
“We can’t win and we’re stuck here together
“Yeah, I hope it will last forever.”

“Don’t ever dare to hope,” he said
“So I’m never let down too bad
“I know there’s nowhere to go
“So I’ll just stay here, instead”
He knew better than to pull at a thread
They unravel like the thoughts in his head
He looked out; it filled him with dread
And this is what he said…

chorus

With good looks and books on their side
And hearts bursting with national pride
They sand songs that went along for the ride
And the other side complied
They said, “Hey, man, where do you reside?
“And could it be mother’s superior lied?
“And is it possible too many have died?”
It’s only natural to reply

chorus

Hmm, my guess is this song is about the how empires come and go and how each one has left a scar on the face of the earth and mankind in their efforts to maintain their power. Every empire throughout history has foolishly believed that they are somehow different from the preceding empire and the certitude of their "difference" shared amongst its leaders meant[to them] that they'll last forever. Thats my interpretation.

It sounds to me like it's about someone who is initially a political activist, but then he finds someone who is either neutral or holds the opposite view, and he ends up suppressing his views in order to keep hooking up with this chick.

It could also be about how politics are really important until they start to interfere with real life - most democrats wouldn't refuse to date a republican, they would just keep quiet about politics, and vice versa

The song is very 1984, if you've read it, and you should.

This song is about that last desperate moment when you realize all the diligent activism you've gone through has resulted in so very little. Politics is an incredibly ugly world, the quintessential cultural biproduct of humanity's biggest flaws. The ideals we hold to make the world get better, will probably never be accepted or understood to be effective, and in the end all we can do is comfort each other. It also encapsulates the disillusion of idealistic, graduating college students upon entering the real world, with the intent of changing it.

This song IS 1984. "If you want a picture of the future, then imagine a boot stamping on a human face....FOREVER!" - George Orwell

Straight out of the book. I think the first two verses are saying that that humanity is always aware that everything could collapse at any moment, but they try to ignore it, because they might as well enjoy it while they can. Third verse generalises it further, two sides in a war, both just going along with the war, but neither of them can ever win.

That's amazing! 1984 is one of my favourite books, and when you listen to the song with the 1984 story in mindit fits perfectly!

I haven't read 1984 myself, and it may fit that better, but it occured to me that this could be a metaphor for the Cold War. 'She' (MOTHER Russia) making sure the curtains were red, the colour associated with the USSR, and 'he' (America). Both sides knew they couldn't win, as if one attacked, it would result in total destruction for both sides, and so they could only 'hope it would last forever' in perpetual deadlock. Their 'hearts bursting with national pride,' and the singing songs seems be allowing them to go along with pointless arms race which cannot be won simply because of both sides patriotism. 'Is it possible that too many have died,' could be echoing back to WW2, when both sides lost so many people, but, being followed by the chorus, it seems that even with that sort of message, they can't find peace.
Of course, it could that Bad Religion are trying to combine both ideas, and show how parts of our history, like the cold war, are in many ways as bad things were in 1984.

This song is meant simply to paint a picture of the hopelessness and gloominess of oppressed people. The song has a sort of bogged-down, heavy feel to it. You get the feeling that the characters in the song have given up long ago and are now resigned to their fate. Like the people in 1984. Y'all above posters with your big words are looking way too deep into this.

This song is about never giving up till the fucking end. Just like in 1984 as they reference to in the song(her-Julia), (him-Winston). They knew they couldn't win and that they would never beat the Party but they loved each other anyways. They loved each other and defied the system untill the Party came took them away from each other and tortured them untill they recanted their beliefs and became part of society agin, a fate which they knew was inevitable.

1984 was okay. Brave New World was so much better. But, I agree. This sounds like he wrote it after watching one of the scenes in 1984 or reading it where they were in the room and before she leaves one of them asks "Do you think any of it's true?" and the other says "No. It's all a lie."

This song parallels 1984 quite nicely. It goes right along with the hopelessness of beating the party. It is in someways a synopsis of the ending.

Obviously about 1984.
We read it in English this year and I hated the book, but I loved it at the same time.
I gave my English teacher this song but I don't think she ever listened to it.

the title is actually taken from a line from 1984. When Winston is being interrogated by O'Brian in the Ministry of Love, O'Brian tells him how in the future, even more absolute power will be maintained by the Party through even more suffering by the population. He says "If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face- forever."

1984 more like 2009. only they hide what's going on. why do all the good people die because they know that government sucks and life isn't going to get better. all of you who are happy don't know shit. we're living in the same type of world as the dudes in 1984 only they're keeping it hidden and letting you believe that freedom and equality exist. it fucking doesn't you hear me it doesn't! we're all fucking slaves and mindless robots except for a very few.
