Lyrics for Atheist Peace as interpreted by Aerion

Atheist Peace Lyrics
Maybe it’s too late for an intellectual debate,
but a residue of confusion remains.

Changing with the times,
and amphetamine tortured minds
are average the citizen’s sources of pain.

Tell me what we’re fighting for—
I don’t remember anymore,
only temporary reprieve

And the world might cease
if we fail to tame the beast
from the faith that you release
comes an atheist peace.

Atheist peace.

Political forces ran
political winds of discontent,
and the modern age emerged triumphantly.
But now that safety’s gone,
And it’s time to de-evolve
and relive the dark chapters of history

Tell me what we’re fighting for—
No progress ever came from war,
only a false sense of increase

and the world won’t wait
for the truth upon a plate
but we’re ready now to feast on an atheist peace.

Atheist peace

I think this song is about how there has been so much war in human history, many do to religious conflicts.

"Atheist Peace" is a play off the phrase "Holy War" because they are exact opposites.

I agree.
"from the faith that you release
comes an atheist peace. "
It's more about letting go of your faith than denying it completely.

Ive been a long time atheist, since i was 12 and its been such an eye opener. A world with out religion would result in a world with out peace. Plus we wouldn't have this damn Iraqi "Take over" on our hands. Note i blame both Christians and Muslims for Sep.11, no one group can be souly to blame.

If you think about religion as a whole, everything you have learned has been from a human telling you(we all know how reliable this is) and no actual proof or evidence. I understand the obvius Aethesit peace/holy war thing but as to the actual meaning I would have to agree with Lathckey kid, its extremely hard just to deny something at once, its a slow progression...

those lyrics are wrong! here are my corrections, or just click on the other one, i think they have it right

"Changing with the times,
and amphetamine tortured minds"
its 'developmentally tortured minds'

"Political forces ran
political winds of discontent"
should be:
'Political forces rent bitter cold winds of discontent'

had to point that out. sorry.

ya i agree this song means that if nobody believed in god there would be peace. but i think that idea is totally wrong. this is just my opinion but even if nobody believed in god people would still be power hungry and willing to stab people in the back for money. people would still be jealous and greedy and evil. if nobody believed in god there would still be war.

morality's an individual thing, not religious, though its heavily influenced by religion. It's true that most wars are religious based, not that doesn't mean its spirituality based. You can believe in god or a greater being, but not necessarily all the rules that go with religion. Thats what causes the wars, the organization and rules. I believe in a greater power, but i frickin hate religion.

i do love this song though. nobody says it like Bad Religion.

I love bad religion, but I hate you people. Their intelligent music draws out the most arrogant, narrowminded idiots. You can't blame all of the world's problems on religion, thats providing a scapegoat, a simple answer to a much more complex problem. Though people do atrocious things in the name of religion, the true essence of religion calls for universal peace. You can't blame the War in Iraq strictly on Muslims Extremists or Christian Imperialists. Sadaam Hussein has committed genocide, and that alone is reason to invade. Though we kind of shot first and asked questions later, somebody needed to help these people. How can you people speak so idealistically and then turn your back on those screams of the innocent? I love bad religion, but I just want to encourage everbody here to think for yourself, and not believe everything Greg Graffin says just because he puts it into a song.

I never got to my main point:

It's naiive to believe that without religion there would be no war.

You're really fooling yourself if you think believing in the Tooth Fairy is going to help anything in this world. Give me a fucking break.

If it isn't always about war, then tell me, where are the wars about our preferences in pizza toppings? Where was the last war concerning who watches Oprah? Or about an offensive skin condition on some political leader?

It's always about religion. And since there is, in fact, no God/Jesus/Muhammad/Mishna/whathaveyou, you're all murderers. Murderers who have the nerve to look down on the logical-minded atheists who have picked out the frauds from day one.

castrophony has a damn good point, you know...religion is often used as a justification for war to rationalize it for a nation/group, but it is not the actual cause in many cases. Without religion, international anarchy, fear, greed, hatemongering, etc. would still exist; the governments/institutions who conduct war would just have one less tool to use in selling wars. Yes, wars would be harder to justify to "the masses" without religion, but the geopolitical and economic causes of many, especially modern, wars would still exist.

As an agnostic I look down on both religious extremists and "logic-minded" atheists. The truth of the matter is that Greg Graffin may be an atheist, but the other band members aren't. As such, I'm surprised they would agree to sing this song... I absolutly agree that when they sing of the established church and its wrongs as well as blindly following things as wrong, I can understand and agree with that. But, spirituality is not wrong! Wanting to believe in something other than yourself is not something to look down on and many people find happiness and a place of belonging in a religion.
Religion does not cause wars! Get that into your heads! Oil in Iraq, money during the Crusades, every "Holy War" has an ulterior motive drummed out by its pragmatic and, most often, less-than-believing leaders.
Though I love the song, I tend to disagree with its message.

Oh, and one more thing. For those who dont know about the third-option, agnostic means that I dont see enough proof to say "God exists" but, at the same time, there is no proof saying "God doesnt exist". As such. I refuse to lean either way.

i hate you guys so very much. Bad religion isn't anti-christianity or even anti-theism for that matter. They are against conformity of society (psh like we havn't heard that a million times)... not all their songs say religion is crap. Personally i don't think the removal of religion would bring peace at all, but i do support it.

alot of people are saying that most wars/mass murders are caused by religion.
Just because a war may be started "in the name of God" does not mean god supports it. In all of those wars you are talking about, the people in power use whatever god their people may believe to manipulate the people into supporting the war. This can only happen if the government has control over the church and what it teaches, thereby the government has the power to keep its people ignorant of the true message of that particular religion. The papacy did exactly that same thing during the crusades.

what id like to bring up is how the complete lack of religion brings wars.mass murders also. does anybody remember hitler?or stalin? both of these two characters were vehemently anti-religion but they both commited some of the worst acts of genocide seen in the 20th century.
When you take a way religion,or a higher moral authority, man is free to do as he pleases, responsible to no one but himself.

I think Bad Religion said it's easy to use religion as a metaphor for anything that doesn't allow freedom of thought.

Being against religion doesn´t necessarily mean you cannot believe there is some sort of god around who created the universe. But the religions we know today all come from naive ideas of nomad tribes in the middle east more than 2000 years ago. It is a shame people still follow and make wars about it.

Atheists believe they have only one life and they tend to rather enjoy than fight each other and die for stupid ideas. So I do belive in Atheist Peace, although I don´t call myself one.

I heard an interview somewhere where Graffin said that this song was an attack on the belief that if you're an atheist, you're supposed to be combative and fight with people of various religious affiliations.

I'm not quite sure how that works, but there you go.

i think its more of an attack on organized religion than spirituality. see, Jews are spiritual, yet they get along fine.anyway, i love the fast melody. and i always thought Graffin was an agnostic? i thought it was the guitarist who's an atheist. i know the bassist believes in god.

Actually, if nobody believed in God, there would probably be even more warfare and violence. Because people would not have that worry about going to Hell or Heaven any longer. They'd feel they could just do whatever they wanted with no long-term consequences. In response to people who say "All religious people are weak" (by the way, that's a very ignorant and judgemental statement), atheism is also home to a lot of "weak people," People who find "comfort/ease" in not believing in God, because then they don't have to feel like there are long-term consequences/responsibilities for what they "do wrong."

Anyway, I think Blackbird 1565 is correct. It's basically attacking the commonly held idea that all Atheists are these angry, hateful people with no moral values. It's saying that Atheists can be peaceful/loving people too. And using religious wars as proof of this.

I personally wouldn't like to rid the world of Religion, at all. I am an atheist through and through, but I think that the world would be shit if we all believed in the same thing - where would the debates be? I respect people's rights to have a religion of course, but I do not believe churches should be tax-free, because they're becoming businesses.

I'm all for trying to convince people of atheistic arguments but if I had the chance tomorrow to rid the world of religion.. I wouldn't do it for the aforementioned reason.
