Two people touching lips
Hands on each others hips
Nothing else in the world but one another
The forty second floor
On a distant shore
I wonder how we strayed so far from this

Remember when we were
Just flesh and bone you sir
May have forgotten how good your world can be
So put down your hollow tips
And kiss you lovers lips
And know that fate is what we make of it
Please end this please end this before it ends us, ends us, ends

I want to stay inside
I want to stay inside for good
I want to stay inside for good for good for good for good

I read the news today
And everything they say
Just makes me want to stay inside and wait
But the better part of me knows
That waiting in the throws
Is on a par with reading while my eyes are closed

"what can I do"? you say
"its just another day
In the life of apes with ego trips!"
Put down your hollow tips
And kiss your lovers lips
And know that fate is what we make of it

Please end this please end this before it ends us, ends us, ends us
I want to stay inside
I want to stay inside for good
I want to stay inside for good for good
Oh
I'm gonna stay inside
I'm gonna stay inside for good
I'm gonna stay inside for good for good
I want to stay inside
I want to stay inside for good
I want to stay inside
Don't want to stay inside for good
Don't want to stay inside for good for good for good

General Comment:theres this weird thing that happens to song writers. they become extremely focused on their creation (the song), writing all the parts and fitting perfectly together. It happens eventually that they can lose touch with the outside world solely because they have focused on their creation for so long.

I don't know if anyone can relate to this or not, but i think it makes sense that he's singing about losing touch with the outside world

General Comment:This so describes my x-lover so well, agoraphobic. Afraid of public places, afraid of everything, and without confidence in his ability to change things or try. Victimizing himself and accepting unhappiness is how he ended up. This is one of his anthem songs. He can never maintain a relationship for very long because of his social and mental battles, but people desperately try only to give up when they are met with silence in return. It's so sad that people with this disorder hide themselves from the world because most of the time they are incredible people. I know, despite how hard I try, and how much love we had for one another, that my efforts were useless, and he is doomed to be alone in his own misery.

General Comment:most of you have it figured out... some still are kinda reaching. just to clear up the confusion, here is a quote from an interview with brandon boyd directly, in which he talks about the meaning behind this song:

"That song is sort of covering the idea that there is a very strong tendency for certain media outlets to try and keep us afraid as to keep us consuming and docile and pliable, so to speak. I think it captures that feeling that we don't want to stay indoors, and that even though we're sort of sometimes being forced to, or forced to feel like we have to, you don't necissarilly have to."

there ya go. he's referencing the warfare going on around the world and how the media manipulates information to the advantage of their own biases. he's saying we can't just believe everything we hear in the media for that reason (it's "like reading with my eyes closed"). the beginning of the song has sort of a nostalgic feel, like he's remembering a time before the warfare, and challenging us to stop the violence and war and just love one another.

General Comment:I believe this song is about the war in Iraq. I didn't get it from listening to it, but actually looking at the lyrics it becomes clear. I might not be right, but judging by the time it was written etc. and the line
    "The 42nd floor
    On a distant shore
I wonder how we strayed so far from this"
That to me, reminded me of September 11.
It does relate to war, but also to quote:
    "Please end this
    Before it ends us"
Could be talking about the war. End it before it ends our lives.
Saying that, the song could also be interpreted as a metaphor for a rocky relationship. But I still mostly think it is about the war on Iraq. Also, someone says it goes 'For Good For God' at the end, but I hear it as 'For good for good f*ck off for good' etc. at the end.
Lastly, someone else says that they feel one of the lyrics is
    "I read the news today
    And everything they say
Just makes me want to stay inside" and wait but I hear it as stay inside in May.

General Comment:I can guarantee he swears at the end, we know brandon has a problem with the whole religion, god thing, and what better way to show his frustration with god and the world then to pretend he is saying/accepting god and makes us expect the word god but really hear the complete opposite. great way to stick it to the man... i mean god

General Comment:im almost certain he says "for god" and not "fuck off" i dont know if it would make sense. When brandon uses the word "fuck" he usually uses it in a place which enhances his frustration or opinion on a topic. Here it just sits there with nothing to say "fuck off" to.
