This party is old and uninviting
Participants all in black and white
You enter in full-blown technicolor
Nothing is the same after tonight

If the world would fall apart
In a fiction-worthy wind
I wouldn't change a thing
Now that you're here

[Chorus]
Love is a verb
Here in my room [Repeat: x3]
Your love is a verb
Here in my room {Repeat: x3]

You enter and close the door behind you
Now show me the world seen from the stars
If only the lights would dim a little
I'm weary of eyes upon my scars

If the world would fall apart
In a fiction-worthy wind
I wouldn't change a thing
Now that you're here

[Chorus]

Tractor beam into your incision
Spinning as free ? vicious world
I came here expecting next to nothing
So thank you for being that kind of girl

Kind of girl [Repeat x10]

Song Meaning:This song is not about love. Those of u who think that are mislead by juxstaposition. The song has the word love in it, but it is strictly to mean sex. "Love is a verb," means that love is not something to hold or feel, its somehting you do, sex. If the song had gone, "sex is what i do in my room," there would be no misinterpretting the song. Important to note: first time we hear about love in his room, she's not in his room yet. The second time we hear about love, she is in his room. Sex is the same with her or with someone else. The head-spinning is a normal part of sex, nothing special 'cause of her. It was what he expected, next-to-nothing. Basically, the song is about the corruption of the world and the role we play in it and the price we pay to play such a role. Important symbols: light = truth, wind = corrupt force. So, at this party, which represents the sex game, all of the participants are in black and white. Black and white is a reference to light. The participants are oblivious to the truth. She comes in "full blown technicolor." This is another reference to light. Light is upon her, she knows the truth of the world, How does she know? Because she's "fully blown." This is a reference to the wind. She knows the truth but she had to pay the price and learn the hard way. Wind is defined as a symbol in the second stanza. The world is gonna be detroyed by the wind. Important, in 2nd stanza: he wouldn't save the world if he could, because of her. This stanza is repeated in the 5th stanza, but the difference is: he wouldn't save the world, because he's seen the corruption in it and he doesn't want to save it. "Now that your here," is to imply "now that you've shown me the world from the stars." This is another reference to light. From above, the stars shine the light of truth on the world. He responds at first with shame, wanting to hide his scars (because he's a part of the corruption, he's a participant in the party), but then he looks at the world with hate and he wouldn't save it if he could. Further evidence that this song is not about love: personification of a machine to discribe sex: "pink tractor beam" is his penis and it is procedurally going into her "incision." This is an overly mechanical way to discribe sex. Sex is seen as routine, mechanical and means nothing. This is important to pick up on. The head spinning and whirl is a normal part of this routine sex. He was already expecting it. He was expecting next to nothing, he got it. Sex is next to nothing. She's next to nothing. To conclude: He begins in the dark about the evils of the world, then spots her (she's the truth bearer, with the light, she knows because she's already paid her price), then she shows him the truth that the world sucks and that he himself sucks because he is part of the world. But the song doesn't stop after he knows the truth, now he must pay his price for enlightenment. His price is utter acceptance that he has to continue his routine rituals and continue living in a corrupt world because now: there's nothing he can do to save the world, even if he wanted to. Nothing is what he expected and nothing is what he got. The author is playing with the line: "Nothing is the same after tonight." Nothing is still nothing. Its the same, even after enlightement, nothing conintues to be nothing. Sex is nothing, she's nothing, the sex game is nothing, its all meaningless.

Song Meaning:I respect everyone's input about this song and I see how the "girl and party," makes shit look like Brandon Boyd is putting his fucking pants on, but I think it's also extremely cool how this song can apply amalgamation of several meanings. But, to the real point of the song. Sex is rather a symbol to push something deeper in to one's mind set with this song. Sex is rather just an "action," I put that in quotations, because sex is a pretty meaningless act, you're the one who has put meaning in to it. So, to the lyrics. Brandon Boyd arrives at the party and everybody is bland, nothing intrigues him, but the girl he meets bring him out of his "room" his way of thinking. To shorten this, basically his actions were just as bland as he saw everyone, so once the girl stepped in she was basically performed something just as bland as sex, but you can make sex meaningful once you take a step out of your own mind set. Her sexual acts brought him to a point where he was tired of looking at everything bland, so he finally stepped out of his "room"/(the way he perceived the whole night was going to be.) The girl was basically a sedative that brought him out of his bland mind set. Her meaningless act became something greater than words and he performed it with the help of others.

Song Meaning:He's in a chatroom - that is the Black & White participants

A video chat begins - Technicolor is a video reference..deeper reds greener greens, etc.
    its a Video Chat clearly

nothing is the same after tonight because he's about to be one of those guys that...WHAT???

yeah love is a verb (an action) love into action alone watching this webcam wishing his bedbroom lights would dim a little so she doesn't see scars on his exposed body.

but why is he doing this? His eyes (not penis)is tractor beamed into her incision.

TO SUMMARIZE HE HAD VIDEO CHAT SEX HE WASN'T EXPECTING BUT YOU GET THE FEELING IT'S WHAT HE WAS AFTER.

IF YOUR THAT KIND OF GIRL HIT ME UP!!

now this line "you enter and close the door behind you has 2 interpretations for me

    1. (least likely)they are both young live w/their parents she closes the door for privacy.

    2. (makes better sense) closing the door behind you is a metaphor for private chat room.

General Comment:To be honest, the first time I heard it, I didn't get that it was about sex. So I'm not going to be one of those MANY commenters beginning their comment with the rhetorical question, "Why CAN'T it be about sex?"

Personally, I have two competing interpretations of the song. First one, the weakest of the two, is that is IS about sex. But it's written from the point of a character, one who is dirty, crass, unromantic, and looking to economize sex. He is not one that wants love, because our society sells sex, and for that reason, it is always on our minds. So I think this is a story about a guy for whom sex is really the only thing he ever looks forward to.

My stronger interpretation is looking at the lyrics more cryptically. The "pink tractor beam" line, I think is supposed to throw people off. I doubt it really means a penis, but I think the lyrics are meant to play with your mind. The lyrics of Incubus are always deeper than we think. With this in mind, I see it as someone who is jaded and cynical, who sees everyone as fake and boring. Then he finds a woman, who somehow intrigues him, awes him, and makes him feel different than he has. He feels this girl genuine, not like anyone else he knows. "Enter and close the door behind you" is not of a bedroom per se, rather the "door" of his psyche. He is letting her in, and she makes her presence strong by remaining there with him, hence closing the door.
"Show me the world seen from the stars" is asking permission to let him inside her... but not sexually. I mean, he wants to experience what this goddess experiences, all the colour versus the black-and-white life he's known all along.
"Love is a verb." When people read this line, they think "Love + Action = Sex!". I didn't get this, but I can understand this interpretation. The way I see it, this character is referring to love being substantiated. A sensible action, rather than just an impossible ideal. Love is real in his room (his mind, soul), because it is being demonstrated, something he is not too familiar with.

Since Make Yourself, I think the lyrical themes became very strong for the band. From what I get from the album ACLOTM... it's about breaking away from the norms, from the group, from conformity. About seizing experiences to be different, and about the darkness of living in such a monotonous, robotic life. "Here In My Room" represents taking notice of someone who has left the murder, so to speak, someone who dares to be different, and the admiration of such boldness and uniqueness. And the love and intimacy that comes of it. (By intimacy, I don't just mean sex."

General Comment:Honestly.... I love this song JUST for the picture it paints.....

BB is really good at being vague, but still giving us something tangible to see in our heads.... who knows what his color was, but he's an artist, so having someone be that splash of color in your life must have been pretty freaking special.

I laugh at you people for thinking that its not about sex. Seriously. Incubus is made up of normal people, with normal wants/needs/body functions.

Brandon Boyd is not a perfect God. He's a human being. Sure, he's FUCKING AWESOME!!! but that doesn't change the fact that they do have the physical capabilities to write something like this. There is nothing wrong with sex. There is nothing wrong with making it special and feeling and open like this instance.....

Makes me jealous in some ways. But then again. I know sex isn't that special unless something else is behind it... :) It is beautiful.... I wish they would use piano in their songs more often. Mike isn't that bad! :D

At least, I'm pretty sure its Mike, judging from live performances I've seen recorded.... It wouldn't be the same. I absolutely love piano, played for 15 years but still suck as compared to my other instruments. It can be so strong, haunting, lingering, rich but not overpowering. Just what this song needed.

My uh, two cents there. Take it or leave it. Continue to argue about something that is purely by interpretation anyway. There is no right or wrong. Its a viewpoint.

General Comment:I agree, I feel this song is about sex. However, why does sex have to portrayed as a negative thing. "Love is a verb here in my room" that means he is in the "action" of being in love. When he says "If the world would fall apart In a fiction worthy wind I wouldn't change a thing Now that you're here" What if that means I wouldn't change anything in my life now that you are here. I think this is a beautiful song that is about the intimacy of sex. Not just about the action. I love this song. I will play it at my wedding.
