Oh, you humor me today
Calling me out to play
With your telescope eyes, metal teeth
I can't be seen with you, you freak

Go cry, go run away
Let your short legs carry you away
With your big dress and your dirty hair
Your pen's waiting for you
Just get far, far away from me
I don't want your disease

[Chorus]
Please don't make me cry
Please don't make me cry
I'm just like you
I know you know
I'm just like you
So leave me alone

Dear Matthew why can't you see
You're just not near enough like me
With your telescope eyes, metal teeth
I can't be seen with you

[Chorus: x4]

Oh, you humor me today

General Comment:and maybe she is talking to herself first, like her younger self (let your *short legs* carry you away)
she doesnt want to be that "nerdy" person anymore, but that is the person that Matthew was friends with, so she is basically telling him that she isn't that nerdy person he once knew, but inside she knows that she is still that little girl, only minus the braces and glasses (metal teeth ; telescope eyes)

anyway, it is a really beautiful song, and dispite the lyrics (please dont make me cry) I actually did come very close to crying...

General Comment:I've heard that this song is about Matthew Shepard. He was a student who was bullied, tortured, and murdered because he was gay. I can't listen to this song without thinking about that now, and it's kind of a horrible feeling.

General Comment:A lot of this makes me think of someone who's in love with another, who happens to be very different on the the outside.
The first doesn't want to be seen with them, though, but also doesn't want to lose the loved one.

General Comment:I think it's about tormenting a childhood peer... telescope yes could mean thick glasses, metal teeth could meen braces... and then I beleive when she says "please don't make me cry" and "im just like you" she is realizing painfully that they are the same.

General Comment:i actually saw eisley recently on their acoustic tour, they were brilliant, and sherrie explained why she wrote the song.

it makes a lot of sense, its about her childhood, there was a kid that lived down the street from her, matthew, and everyday he would come over and ask her to play, but when they were at school he would ignore her and pick on her. and he would tell he it was because she had glasses and braces and was smaller than everyone else. and so this was kinda like her "revenge" on him i guess. i'm not sure. but either way it is a wonderful song and quite possibly my favorite eisley song. especially this recording that the lyrics posted come from. the new version irritates me.
