I backed my car into a cop car the other day
Well, he just drove off - sometimes life's okay
I ran my mouth off a bit too much, ah what did I say?
Well, you just laughed it off and it was all okay

And we'll all float on okay
And we'll all float on okay
And we'll all float on okay
And we'll all float on anyway, well

A fake Jamaican took every last dime with that scam
It was worth it just to learn some sleight of hand
Bad news comes, don't you worry even when it lands
Good news will work it way to all them plans
We both got fired on, exactly, the same day
Well, we'll float on, good news is on the way

And we'll all float on okay
And we'll all float on okay
And we'll all float on okay
And we'll all float on alright

Already we'll all float on
Now don't you worry we'll all float on alright
Already we'll all float on alright
Don't worry we'll all float on

Alright, Already
And we'll all float on alright
Already we'll all float on alright
Don't worry even if things end up a bit
Too heavy we'll all float on alright

Already, we'll all float on alright
Already, we'll all float on okay
Don't worry, even if things get heavy
We'll all float on alright

Already, we'll all float on
(Alright!)
Now don't you worry, we'll all float on
(Alright!)
We'll all float on

General Comment:I don't see how anybody could think this was written sardonically? Even before reading the writer's comments on the song, I could tell it was 100% genuine. It was more than genuine, it was overly genuine. Like he was pushing it to be more true than he knew it was. that's not mocking, that's desperation. It's a song of desperation, not a critique.

General Comment:Isaac Brock's Comments on Float On:

"It was a completely conscious thing. I was just kind of fed up with how bad shit had been going, and how dark everything was, with bad news coming from everywhere. Our president is just a fucking daily dose of bad news! Then you've got the well-intentioned scientists telling us that everything is fucked. I just want to feel good for a day. I'd had some friends die, and with Jeremy kind of losing it... After we got out of that dark spot with everything melting down with the band, I just wanted to make a positive record. I think we managed to make a quarter of the record positive, and the rest is either kind of dark or more just relaxing into things being how they are, resigned."

General Comment:Ya, you're dead wrong. This song comes after World at Large for a reason. It's a jab at people who pretend to have this happy-go-lucky attitude about life when they are really just ignorant to the world around them and dead inside. I'm only making assumptions here but it looks like Brock knew this would be the single and, being the genius that he is, incorporated another one of the double entendres he's so good at creating. 1. A happy go lucky rainbow sunshine message for the new MTV drone fans and 2. A kind of inside joke for the older fans. Since you are a fan of the "angry, dirty, sickly Modest Mouse we know and love," I'm surprised you missed the point.

The world is shit. You can either blindly accept it and pretend you're happy or do something to try and change it but things aren't just going to get better for no reason. And you're never going to actually "Float On," until you're dead.

General Comment:This is a great song. In my opinion, it isn't Modest Mouse's best, but for some it is. Perhaps these people haven't heard The Moon and Antarctica quite yet, but this song is popular because of the message, mainly.
This song is about making the best out of every situation and knowing that good news will always follow bad news. Which is funny, considering this son's relationship with World at Large.
The World at Large is a pretty sad song. The singer is a drifter, never stays in one place, and is constantly being dissapionted, getting tired of a place, or just feeling like he needs to move on.
The end is what really makes both songs amazing. After an incredible closing, The World at Large ends with one note, the same note Float On starts with. Listening to these songs back to back, you wouldn't even know they were two different songs.
I'm pretty sure the message at this point is obvious. No matter how bad things seem, or how many bad things happen, you can always make the most of it and Float On.
Granted, this isn't exactly the angry, dirty, sickly Modest Mouse we know and love, but it is quite incredible. If you don't like it for the cheery message, at least enjoy Isaac's guitar.

General Comment:This song Float On, to me, is very relateable. In life I try to live by the float on aspect which is whatever happens, happens. You cant always control everything you do and sometimes you just have to let things go. If there are people in your life that hurt you then just let them go because its not worth wasting your time. And at the end of the day it will all be worth it and it will just Float On.

General Comment:Right off the bat - I don't really give a crap about whether it's "mainstream" or not. I don't really follow that issue, as it's trivial at best and idiotic at worst. If you're offended somehow by that, then you can if it makes you feel any better, but again, I don't care. I like music that has a perceived message I like, lyrics I like, and the right instrumentals to go along with it. That said, I really do like this song. The message I take from it (others might see it differently, that's fine with me) is that shit happens, but life goes on. The exception is when you kick off, of course, but that's kind of irrelevant. The "float on" part is repeated in different ways at the end (and is the namesake of the song) to reinforce this, as life does "float on" before, during, and when bad things happen. I guess that's my take on it.
