Its a good year for a murder
She's praying to Jesus, she's pulling the trigger
There's no tears, cause he's not here
She washes her hands, and she fixes the dinner
But soon they'll be coming, to rush her away
No one's so sure if her crime had a reason

Reasons like seasons
They constantly change
And the seasons of last year
Like reasons have floated away
Away with this spilt milk
Away with this dirty dish water, away
Seventeen years, and all that he gave was a daughter

"It's me and the moon," she says
I got no trouble with that
But i am a butterfly, you wouldn't let me die
"It's me and the moon," she says

And it's over, but just started
The blood stained the carpet
Her heart like a crystal
She's lucid and departed
A life left behind, she can find in her mind gone away

Away with these nightmares
Away with suburbia
Shakedown away
You marry a role and
You give up your soul til you break down

"It's me and the moon," she says
I got no trouble with that,
But I am a butterfly, you wouldn't let me die
"It's me and the moon," she says

But what do you say we go for a ride?
What do you say we get high?
But I'm so tired of days that feel like the night

"It's me and the moon," she says
And I got no trouble with that,
But I am a butterfly, you wouldn't let me die

I am a butterfly,
I am a butterfly,
I am a butterfly

General Comment:Anyone who doesn't think this song is about a wife killing her husband is not listening.

    Let's look at the lyrics:

Its a good year for a murder (It's time to do this, She's had enough)
She's praying to Jesus, she's pulling the trigger (She prays, and then she kills him)
There's no tears, cause he's not here (She doesn't feel bad because he's finally gone)
She washes her hands, and she fixes the dinner(She cleans herself up and goes on with her day)
But soon they'll be coming, to rush her away (The cops are coming and she knows it)
No one's so sure if her crime had a reason (Neighbors, etc. thought her life was fine)

As for the lines where he says:

What do you say we get high?
Cause I'm so tired of days that feel like the night

He is just saying lets do something, because these days she is living just feel like she is sleeping, she is not engaged in anything during her day.

General Comment:Ok this song is definitely about a woman killing her husband, however I have a different take on the meaning. I believe that this song is about a man who is sick, (perhaps Alzheimers, dementia, etc) and lost in his own mind.
Some of the lines that support this idea include:
1)"There's no tears, cause he's not here"
2)"And the seasons of last year
    Like reasons have floated away"
3)"A life left behind, she can find in her mind gone away"

The husband is still there physically but is no longer the person she knew, or loved. She was relieving her pain, as well as his.

General Comment:When he says that "she married a role" and at another point he sings "away with this suburbia" she apparently was tired of her life. Spending 17 years with a man that gave her no love and no reason "only a daughter" and she obviously feels alone hence: me and the moon. like no one could understand but she has no issues with that

"Away with the spilt milk...dirty dish water" it was all the little things that had built up over the years to make her realize the only person that she could count on to love her was herself. idk. thats my interpretation.

My Interpretation:This song is about a woman who is abused by her husband.
After years of neglect, she lives in a daze. Her whole life is a lie because she has forced herself to exist in denial for so long.
Finally, she snaps. She kills the man who has battered her all this time.
And she is doubtful that anyone will believe her reasons for killing him.
Knowing nothing else to do, she goes about her business as she waits for the cops to show up.

It strikes me as taking place in the fifties, when men were more or less still considered superior to women.

General Comment:Andrew said it was written about a woman being at the end of the rope with her husband and ends up killing him kinda the idea to take a humanistic spin on the act of murder which probably wasnt the best idea.... That is almost verbatim to what he said lol

General Comment:I'm still convinced of what I thought the first time I heard this--a murder/suicide. She just killed her husband, and the bridge and chorus sound like a suicide note. As a result it's one of the most depressing songs I know of but it's still so insanely peaceful that it's easy to forget the words.

Song Meaning:I've read through the suicide arguments. But a coupple of of things stand out for me In the lyric. She cooks the dinner, does the dishes, she's lucid, departed. She's killed her husband and they are coming to rush her away. Love this song.
