Let's get drunk
You can drive us to the harbor
Wish upon a star but
Do you know what stars are?
Balls of fire, burning up the black space
Falling from the landscape
Exploding in the face of God

Let's get crazy,
Talk about our big plans
Places that you're going
Places that I haven't been
Build my walls up
Concrete castle
Keep this kingdom free of hassle, yeah

Yeah
Yeah

I hear sound echo in the emptiness
All around but you can't change this loneliness
Look what you've found, I've fallen down

Taste the saline rolling down your cheekbone
Tell me that you're alone, tell me on the telephone
Feel your heart it breaks within your chest now
Try to get some rest now, sleeps not coming easy for a while, child

Child, yeah

I hear sound echo in the emptiness
All around but you can't change this loneliness
Look what you've found, I've fallen down
Down, down
Down, down

I hear sound echo in the emptiness
All around but you can't change this loneliness
Look what you've found, I've fallen down
Look at what you've found, I'm falling down
Look at what you've found, I'm falling down

My Opinion:This was the first SoCo song I heard. It's definitely one of my favorite songs.

General Comment:To say this song is purely about "shattered dreams" is to generalize carefully crafted verses into some overall angsty and cliche recognition of pain in song. "Down" shouldn't be treated like some Dashboard lament. Why? Because McMahon is more versatile than that. The song takes us through the last night of a couple's relationship all the way though the brutal realization of its inevitable disintegration. He starts off: "let's get drunk, you can drive us to the harbor..." only to admit that they can only "get crazy, talk about our big plans" after some courage from the bottle. This forced seperation is apparent even before the the physical distance. McMahon is keeping his kingdom free of hassle, taking oncoming heartache and emotion and chucking it over his walls. He urges her to get crazy, talking "about their big plans," but its a farce...and he knows it. The scene is contrastive, with his girlfriend's anxiousness for the mysertious future met with his detachment and nostalgia. There's something special in his description of stars: his imagery is a feast, trying not-so-subtely to quickly allow the listeneer to relate to his feelings of love for the girl. Over-the-top? Yeah. But its mean't to be, as McMahon stealthy acknowledgers how younger relationship are dominated by infatuation and grandiose emotions.

    - i don't really know how to explain this. she sees something as bing beautiful and mysterious, and he ruins it by telling her that they're just fire balls.

he's breaking up with her, but he's doing it gently.
and it seems like it actually makes it more painful and hard for her.

General Comment:such a beautiful, sad song.

Taste the saline rolling down your cheekbone
    - she's crying, obviously.
Tell me that you're alone, tell me on the telephone
    - he wants to hear that she hasn't moved on yet
Feel your heart it breaks within your chest now
    - she's heartbroken
Try to get some rest now,
Sleep's not coming easy for a while, child
    - having a hard time falling aslepe, because she's so upset

General Comment:Am I the only person who sees this as a happy song?!
I feel infinite when I listen to it... especially the beginning.

"Let's get drunk, you can drive us to the harbor..." makes me think of friends and all of the spontanaiety that comes with being young, and able to act on an impulse and just go have fun for a night, and block out every care or worry in the world.

Yea, that "wish upon a star, but do you know what stars are" has a bit of bitterness in it-- I see that after reading through everyone else's commentary-- but I think it can be interpreted as the kind of spiteful that comes with being young and carefree as well.

"Balls of fire burning up the black space, falling from the landscape, exploding in the face of God"...

I see bright yellow balls of fire illuminating a black, dark, space, as if to fill it somehow, or dress it up. I see a GOOD kind of explosion. Like a way a mischevous teenager would brag about doing something slighlty off color (not a terrible life altering deed, but you know, something a bit daring), one of those "haha look at me, I'm invincible" moments.

"Let's get crazy, talk about our big plans, places that you're going, places that I haven't been." I sense that same "I'm invincible" tone in this too. It's like they're living in the moment, acknowledging what's to come, but not letting it bog them down-- I see it as them joking about the future.

For this reason, I think this is an amazing graduation song. A happy one, though. It's a song to play and listen to during that summer after you graduate high school, right before you go away to college... when you're living in the moment and making the most of time that you have left to spend with your high school buddies. You know you're gonna have to grow up, you know that time is coming... but at the same time, it seems like it's a galaxy away.

"I hear sound echo in the emptiness" -- I don't see this as a BAD thing. I see it as a postive thing... even though the singer feels lonely, he hears sound. There's still SOMEthing there, there's still a memory to cling to. Yes, definately, I think that he is missing someone. But he can still sense them, and that is okay. To me, when he says ,"Look what you found, I've fallen down" it's like he is saying "I've fallen back to memories... memories in which I've felt infinite."

The next verse is the saddest. But yet, it still somehow comforts me. I'm not sure why... I guess I get the impression that the "you" he is singing to/about, misses him too, but that it isn't a depressed kind of missing eachother. I see it more as a "homesick" feeling... temporary. They still are close, and they still have their memories of togetherness. They might want to be back there in that moment for a little while, maybe that's why there's crying? But they're communicating, so that tells me they are just as close. Missing eachother, but the happy kind of missing eachother. They will see eachother again, and make more happy memories.

General Comment:I love this song. i think that when he is talking about the stars he is explaining how something so beautiful can be ugly at the same time. I think this shows what his outlook on life was as he was writing this song. i think this song is about how he is in a relationship and the girl is leaving and it breaks his heart and their relationship is sort of falilng apart because of it. she talks about their big plans for the future that they both know are far out of reach and he decides that he needs to let go of this relationship and never let love in again. build his walls up. he blames her for the downfall of the beautiful relationship that they had.
