I know that it is freezing but I think we have to walk
I keep waving at the taxis; they keep turning their lights off
But Julie knows a party at some actor's west side loft
Supplies are endless in the evening; by the morning they'll be gone

When everything is lonely I can be my own best friend
I get a coffee and the paper; have my own conversations
With the sidewalk and the pigeons and my window reflection
The mask I polish in the evening, by the morning looks like shit

And I know you have a heavy heart, I can feel it when we kiss
So many men stronger than me have thrown their backs out trying to lift it
But me, I'm not a gamble, you can count on me to split
The love I sell you in the evening, by the morning won't exist

You're looking skinny like a model with your eyes all painted black
You just keep going to the bathroom, always say you'll be right back
Well, it takes one to know one, kid, I think you've got it bad
But what's so easy in the evening, by the morning is such a drag

I've got a flask inside my pocket, we can share it on the train
If you promise to stay conscious I will try and do the same
We might die from medication, but we sure killed all the pain
But what was normal in the evening, by the morning seems insane

And I'm not sure what the trouble was that started all of this
The reasons all have run away but the feeling never did
It's not something I would recommend, but it is one way to live
Because what is simple in the moonlight, by the morning never is
What's so simple in the moonlight, now is so complicated
What's so simple in the moonlight, so simple in the moonlight

General Comment:Lua means moon in Portuguese, and in the song the evening/moonlight is a time of illusion, a time when the narrator lulls his sadness and loneliness with drugs. In the moonlight it's simple, or in other words, under the influence of the moonlight it is simple. So, when you interpret it that way, the title means "the illusion" or "the drugs" I hope that clears up the title questions.

My Interpretation:In the most general way, this is speaking about doing things one day that you will regret the following morning, to the extent that it complicates your life far too much for you to handle.

My Interpretation:This song is about going out at night, taking enough drugs to keep you happy, because you're slipping into depression. You find someone that understands you, and is like you, but you know you can't love them, because you'll drag them down with you, although they're in just as much trouble.

I love the fact that this is sung from Conor's point of view, it acknowledges the girl well. She is an important part of the story.

General Comment:So many random words are wrong. I submitted a change but apparently needs to be sent to the copyright holder to be approved? That's lame.

Song Meaning:This song is about gong out to parties, taking enough drugs to feel good for the first time all day, and finding someone that'as hollow, depressed and drugged out as you. Then you wake up and all that clarity and happiness is replaced a deep loneliness and the knowledge that you're only making it worse by living that way.

I think it's important that he uses the second person, because it's acknowledging the girl as really important to the story. That's kind of the only hope in the whole song, is that he truly believes he's found someone who he understands and who understands him. And maybe in some universe they could love each other, but not here, because this is a Bright Eyes song, so the narrator knows he's too full of shit to love anyone, let alone anyone that needs as much help as he does.

Check out this version he did as a duet with Gillian Welch, it's awesome.

General Comment:for some reason i had imagined it as talking about a cutter. i thought perhaps coke or bulimia as well, but for some reason i just feel that she cuts. just my opinion. and the part with "eyes painted black", she is wearing black makeup. not some deep philosophical thing about how her eyes are black like her soul, or about her pupils on coke, its just fucking makeup. maybe goth or she's just insecure.
