Lyrics for Black Comedy as interpreted by SavesTheNight

Black Comedy Lyrics
Well, once I gave a look to you but you never gave it back
So here I stand expressionless but my memories intact
I guess the past is good for a laugh
A comedy so dry and black it makes my stomach hurt so bad
Well, two thumbs up we give this one
Despite it's predictable ending
The dialogue seemed rushed and wrong
But the actors did their best
To lay some worth on every word like coffins dropped into the earth
The saddest sound we ever heard
We sang along
We sang it, "Take this weight away"
We sang it, "Take this weight away"
(We’re singing)
We’re singing, "Take this weight away, away, away"

a wonderful short and simple song written awhile back and performed on a radio show out of Dallas, kdge, on 12/01/02. later a studio verson was released on a split EP, bright eyes/neva dinova 04/10/04. i like the acoustic verson from the radio broadcast a lot more.

Bladmand, that is interesting, I initially assumed it was just another song about unrequited love, but I can see it being about a suicide. The final line of "take this weight away," gets me every time, I wish the ending lasted longer.

This is also one of my favorite Bright Eyes songs. The ending is beautiful.

It's kind of good to find one of his songs not spammed up with MTV fangirls.

This song is great because of its orginality and ending. The ending is so good.

What a beautiful song. Conor sounds absolutely amazing, as always, especially at the end! I can't even think of any other musician who has touched my life the way his music has

Yes! MTV kids havent taken over this song yet!
It's really pretty, and has those wistful, shaky vocals from Conor that we all love so much. Now that I think about it, it could be about a friend's suicide, concidering the last lines.

This is an awesome song, it's one of my favourites. The lyrics flows so well. There's also something that I noticed about the lyrics, after he sings "... it makes my stomach hurt so bad" it sounds like he mutters "that I cry".

I interpreted it as an extended metaphor of a relationship as a movie. The two people involved were the actors trying to save the "black comedy" doing their best to make their words, or script I suppose, sound meaningful. But in the end, it was pointless, the movie was still terrible with its "predictable ending" and there was no way they could salvage the relationship. So now the two have met up again, but he still remembers their miserable former love, and acknowledges sarcastically, "Well I guess the past is good for a laugh" while admitting it hurt him so bad that he cried. I think it's a nice song, and combined with the other Neva Dinova songs on the EP, it's a really good CD.

I don't have much to contribute as to the meaning of the song, but it certainly sets the mood of the entire One Jug Of Wine EP. The feelings of bitterness ("Well, two thumbs up we give this one, despite its predictable ending") and exaustion are perfectly conveyed, and the last bit, 'We sang it, "Take this weight away"' is probably the saddest sound I've ever heard.

I think it's about life. Like is the comedy so dry and black, it makes his stomach hurt so bad, and he cries. It's like, well life sucks, we know that, but we're got to make the best of it.

"two thumbs up we give this one despite it's predictable ending." that reminds me of something Jim Morrison once said about the cosmic movie. it was something like, "when you die you've gotta watch your whole life flashing before your eyes, internally, forever, so you better have some good incidents in there, and a fitting climax."

hmmmm....so maybe it is about death. I don't know why that reminded me of that, it just came to me head.

peace

there's so much more in this song than the studio version has to offer. jake bellows is touring with bright eyes right now. they'll play this live and it's the stand out of an otherwise excellent set. they draw out the ending and it ends with everyone in the room screaming 'take this weight away'. that, along with some masterful bass, made the show

i love this song. the metaphor is beautiful. my favorite line is the 1st : "well once i gave a look to you, but you never gave it back" for some reason it just hits me really hard.
Chief216, i've heard that too.

CONOR IS [my] GOD.
but I wont get into that here.

this song, every line, every word, every sound, EVERYTHING about it is absolutely CRUSHING to me. I've never heard any other song that I could relate to any better. This song is perfect beyond what words can explain. To me, it's my life story. Honestly, whatever he's singing about, it doesnt matter too much to me; what matters to me is how I interpret it for myself, which is really the point, isnt it?

and yes, he does sing "it makes my stomach hurt so bad, i cried"

I think Britney knows exactly what she's doing to America. She knows if she shaves her head everyone is gonna freak. She knows everything she does is made into a headline. The best part is she doesn't give a flying fuck.
People say Britney's gone crazy.
I just think she's stopped caring what other people think.
Good for you Brit!

oh this song
'it makes my stomach hurt so bad i cry'
and 'take this weight away' are my favourite parts, for reasons.

i love how he uses a 'black' comedy as a metaphor for how shit his life is.
