Nothing unusual, nothing strange
Close to nothing at all
The same old scenario, the same old rain
And there's no explosions here
Then something unusual, something strange
Comes from nothing at all
I saw a spaceship fly by your window
Did you see it disappear?

Amie come sit on my wall
And read me the story of O
And tell it like you still believe
That the end of the century
Brings a change for you and me
Nothing unusual, nothing's changed
Just a little older that's all
You know when you've found it,
There's something I've learned
'Cause you feel it when they take it away

Something unusual, something strange
Comes from nothing at all
But I'm not a miracle
And you're not a saint
Just another soldier
On the road to nowhere

Amie come sit on my wall
And read me the story of O
And tell it like you still believe
That the end of the century
Brings a change for you and me

And Amie come sit on my wall
And read me the story of O
And tell it like you still believe
That the end of the century
Brings a change for you and me

My Interpretation:Pretty much, whenever I hear this song, I connect it to Amy pond and Doctor Who. Dunno why. I just do.

    So that's that.

General Comment:Is it just me or does this song strongly remind you of doctor who. I just finished watching season five with Amy Pond as the Doctors companion. Well, that's the first thing that reminds me of the song.

But then I started to look at the lyrics.

    Nothing unusual, nothing strange
    Close to nothing at all
The same old scenario, the same old rain
    And there's no explosions here

This is Amy before she met the doctor

    Then something unusual, something strange
    Comes from nothing at all
I saw a spaceship fly by your window
    Did you see it disappear?

When she's 7 the doctor appears in her backyard with his ship. The noise wakes her up and she looks out of the window and sees the doctor. He promises to be back in 5 minutes but disappears for many years.

I could go on like this but I just wanted to know if someone else sees the similarity too.

General Comment:IT'S NOT, "Story of O" For those who are clearly misguided in this forum. It's "Story of Old"

General Comment:I've always been told that it's about his piano teacher's daughter who he was in love with?

General Comment:I always thought Amie was the story of a girl that was killed by a rock thrown in a rash of violence in Ireland between the Orange and the Green (stones taught me how to fly...), or maybe a rock thrown at the wall that divides Northern Ireland from the rest of the world. I can't say for sure because I didn't write the song, but I'm fairly certain. It seems full of regret, a conversation one would have in the here-after.

I believe he says "amie come sit on my wall and read me a story of old." At least those are the lyrics on his website damienrice.com/…

and tell it like you still believe...

Sounds to me like Damien might think that the senseless violence that ended her life may have caused Amie to lose her faith.

"...a change for you and me"

If I do remember right, it was only after Amie was struck that the violence subsided. Guilt is a powerful thing.

General Comment:- I always thought he was singing this song to Amie, a friend of him who died suddenly: "then something unusual, something strange comes from nothing at all".
    - "I saw a spaceship fly by your window..." he could be talking about her soul going to heaven...
    - In the chorus, he is asking her to come back, and do what they used to do when they were friends...
    - "Nothing unusual, nothing's changed, just a little older, that's all..." he is letting her know that time has passed, and he is still the same, and that he realized that he was in love with her, but too late, she is gone...
    - "but I'm not a miracle, you're not a saint, just a little soldier on the road to nowhere...." he cannot change the past, he cannot revive her, and she cannot do it neither, she is "on the road to nowhere" (heaven).
    - I do not think that "The Story of O" has a secret message, just a book they used to talk about.

General Comment:I've read a lot of idea people have about this song and have finally made an answer i'm satisfied with. So I read someone said that in an interview damien said the importantce of "O" is the shape because it's like in a relationship you run around in an endless circle trying to figure things out. So amie reading him the story of O is like him and her looking at their own story.

"And tell it like you still believe
That the end of the century
Brings a change for you and me"

This means he wants her to believe they can escape the endless O. Now thing about Damiens other album "9". It's an O with a path leading out of it.

General Comment:The way I interpret this song is that this boy has tried to keep his youth. The classic "Stay gold Ponyboy" kind of scenario. This is because throughout the song it comes back to the chorus "Read me the story of O" which is a childish thing that probably everyone has done as a child. He also explains that he is just an ordinary child "No explosions here" and they grow up "just a little older that's all" and yet nothing unusual happens still.

General Comment:I think that he simply means that he is bored with life so if this woman comes into his life then it would be a little more interesting.

General Comment:The Story of O, as mentioned before is the story of a sex slave and her devotion to her master. I've read the book and although, it is slightly hard to get through at times because of what is done to O, I think the meaning behind bringing up that novel in this song is the idea of torture. The repetition of nothingness, nothing changing even though they are older. The love or relationship or maybe even the actually person, was taken away (moved possibly) and their love can no longer be. But that reality is a torture which he submits himself to because of the love, the devotion, he has. He is hoping that at some point ("The ed of the century") they can be together again. It's painfully beautiful.
