Lyrics for Daughters as interpreted by spickly

Daughters Lyrics
know a girl
she puts the color inside of my world
she's just like a maze
where all of the walls all continually change

I've done all i can
to stand on the steps with my heart in my hands
Now i started to think
maybe its got nothing to do with me.

so fathers be good to your daughters,
daughters will love like you do,
girls become lovers who turn into mothers
so mothers be good to your daughters too.

Oh

Oh you see that skin
its the same shes been standing in
since the day you two met
i bet i was on your mind
never ever any time

Oh yeah

so fathers be good to your daughters,
daughters will love like you do, yeah
girls become lovers who turn into mothers
so mothers be good to your daughters too.

boys you can break
find out how much they can take
boys will be strong and
boys soldier on
but boys would be gone
without warmth of a woman's good good heart

on behalf of every man
looking out for every girl
you are the god and the weight of her world
on behalf of ever man
who's looking out for every girl
you are the god and you are the weight of her world

so fathers be good to your daughters,
daughters will love like you do,
girls become lovers who turn into mothers
so mothers be good to your daughters too
so mothers be good to your daughters too
so mothers be good to your daughters too

freakshos i really suggest that you go bash someone else because john mayer is a genious! i agree with empathy this song is about how a guy realises that a girl just cant open up to him because she cant really open up to him because she cant trust herself with men from the way her father neglected her. so hes telling men to be good to their daughters because they have an impact on a girls life and future reactions and relationships with men. but if you actually made an attemt to listen to the lyrics besides the damn chorus i guess you would understand

I agree with Sneaky Waffle. This to me is a biography of my life, fatherless. It's kind of sad in that manner, but I like the message. I like this song about treating girls right so that they are not left broken, because the way your parents treat you affects who you are in life.

What this song means to me? I am 32 I have a father but he isn't there for me and never has been. He divorced me as well when he left my mom. Although I am sure my story has lots of twists that most don't, like molestation, having to fist fight for survival everyday of my life, growing up. Mother screaming my name nightly because she was getting beat and I would at six step in and take it for her. You name it I have seen it!
What that did was make me? Hard, in an emergency you want me there. I can cope with anything after all I was at war everyday of my life, a normal persons emergency is just another day to me. One thing the hunted know is the wolves don't pity you because you are sweet and cute, no no not at all. It has made me fiercely protective, god have mercy on the idiot that ever tries to hurt anyone I love!
Well thats what I thought, I mean I did save all three of my sisters from the shit I went through, certainly I could protect all my loved ones.
WRONG My bestfriend was killed by her boyfriend and thats when I broke. I can't take the shit anymore. There is a limit to what a little girl can take even if she has become a woman. I mean a swift wind knocks me down lately. I can't watch a Hallmark commercial without crying like a baby. This song makes me feel like someone gets it.
I am a 32 year old, who's married to a great father but a sucky husband. He just can't be loving the way I need him to be. He hasn't stood anywhere with his heart in his hands. I know he loves me, but he can't show it. Not like I need him too. You know that line "you are the god and the weight of her world" is so true. I see the look on his face at times, like he is a king. I do color his world, woman like me can love so strong it's a tornado that a guy can't wait to jump on. The problem is they (only speaking from my experience & I know not all men are like this, just the ones I meet LOL) can't give it back with the same intensity. I would kill to find the guy that actually gives more than he takes. "There is no man Jilly" I am sick of being strong, I don't want to be the fireman anymore I can't do it!

Guys, settle down. The song is simply about a dude who is tired of irresponsible fathers fucking up the women out there. And anyone who gets all "this is mysogynistic" clearly hasn't dealt with how her dad affected her.

I LIKE THIS SONG ALOT, BUT THERE IS A GIRL I KNOW, HER NAME IS CHRISTINA, SHE IS 19 YRS OLD, IVE BEEN FRIENDS WITH HER FOR THE PAST YEAR MAYBE LONGER, IM STILL FRIENDS WITH HER, AND THIS SONG DOES NOT GO WITH HER.. SHE IS A PERFECT GIRL 4 ME, SHE BARELY HAD A MOTHER, BARELY HAD A FATHER PRETTY MUCH RAISED UP BY HER G-PARENTS, AND SHE IS PRETTY MUCH PERFECT SHE WAS PRETTY MUCH ABUSED BY HER G-PARENTS, SO HOW DOES THIS SONG RELATE 2 HER.............

I do sympathize somewhat with Gravitydefiant, that the song seems to characterize women as fragile and men as the ones who "soldier on" but only because of women's good hearts. I think the song's message is very frank and there are many women who just put up walls and can't succeed in things in life though, and a lot of is is because of absent or abusive father. I just don't particularly like the sex stereotyping, even if most women and men are indeed like that. It may be true, but I don't want to listen to a song about it, I don't know, something about it is... ugh! I don't think the song really is that happy at all, it's too slow.

the song is basically clearcut- explaining the whole circle of life and how upbringing does play a part of our future. the way parents bring a kid up defines how its gonna be like for the kid in years to come. no matter how hard we try to keep a mental note on what we will or will not do to OUR kids, whenever OUR parents do something we feel they shouldnt have, the fact of the matter is that you cant too be sure that it wont be repeated. whenever i talk to my ma over something i felt she did wrong, esp towards my baby sis, she usually confides and say that sometimes she doesnt know what to do, afterall she was brought up in a way stricter way. see, even when you wanna do things differently than your own parents its just hard to do cos you dont have a model to follow after!

I love this song. John Mayer's lyrics are amazing. I think this song is about a very troubled daughter. When played on the radio, a part of it goes:

"Oh, you see that skin. It's the same she's been standing in since the day she saw him walking away. Now she's left cleaning up the mess he made"

I think he is singing about a girl who's father left her and her family, and he made a big emotional "mess" for her to clean up.

I've heard a few people saw that this song presents women as "fragile" but I really don't think it does. It's saying that fathers and other important guys in a girl's life need to respect and be good to her. It's saying to put your daughter on a pedastal, not because she is fragile, but because she is the greatest thing you'll ever know, because she is your flesh and blood.

John Mayer is one of the best musicians of this decade. I enjoy his songs which have such incredible passion. This song daughters just brings tears to my eyes. It is so moving. Being a mother--I guess those things just happen. The song could be about a girl who is fatherless. Or it could be about a girl who has a father who just is not there for her. He finds out that she doesn't want or need him when she's grown. So, with that....Fathers be good to your daughters. And...mothers too! :)

Besides being beautiful music (written in New Zealand, how cool!), the words are just incredible. I really got the impression that the girl in the song was abandoned by her father. (I agree with Starrie)And no matter how close Jammer tries to get, no matter how much he shows her how much he cares, she's always putting up walls (i.e. the maze). So he can't get close to her. And he's finally solving her maze, because he realizes that it's not his problem, it's hers.

And therefore, the refrain. It's part of the whole "wheel" concept - "that I believe that my life's gonna see the love I give returned to me." Because this girl was hurt so early on, she's does give out her love. So she's not getting it in return. "Boys you can break. You find out how much they can take." But the boys are giving their love. "Boys will be strong." That they believe in the wheel. "Boys soldier on." And he's just trying to get it through to her that "boys would be gone without the warmth of a woman's good girl heart." (I sing good girl, poetic license. I like the way it ties young ripples to older waves.) And then he's saying that you have to love someone with all your heart.

i love this song so much, i normally don't like john mayer but i heard this song on mtv and i fell in love with it. It's so true, it's about how everything you experiance in your life helps build what you are later on. Parents need to be good to their kids because it will effect everything they are and everthing they can be. It's a great song with a great message i love it

I agree with alot of the things said. Its about guys who try to make girls feel good, and try to make whatever is wrong better, but can't. And its not their fault at all.

So I think its not about other boys that have left girls broken-hearted, but the father (and maybe even mothers) that do. I know sometimes i look at my parents and think i dont want to mary a guy like my dad, and sometimes it scared me that i might. Now dont get me wrong, my father isnt abusive, just not what i consider great. I love him anyways, and so does my mom. But i can relate to the song. So poetic, so gorgeous.

caratrinity..im really sorry to hear about your past....that is horrible and im sorry that you had to go through that especially at such a young age...may god be with you always and you are in my prayers

It's simple. Men, be good to the women in your life. End of story. John Mayer is the man. Read his article in Esquire magazine. I don't always like his music, but he's actually smart.

I agree 100% with gravity defiant. Just looking at the lyrics, let alone listening to it, makes me nauseous. First off, the guy isn't even a good singer. He can't enunciate, so basically when you hear the song, it's like "mada be goo do yo dada"
Urgh. Plus the meaning is sort of... ugh, too, if you really think about it. I guess we all have our likes and dislikes, but... ugh...
