Lyrics for Daughters as interpreted by spickly

Daughters Lyrics
know a girl
she puts the color inside of my world
she's just like a maze
where all of the walls all continually change

I've done all i can
to stand on the steps with my heart in my hands
Now i started to think
maybe its got nothing to do with me.

so fathers be good to your daughters,
daughters will love like you do,
girls become lovers who turn into mothers
so mothers be good to your daughters too.

Oh

Oh you see that skin
its the same shes been standing in
since the day you two met
i bet i was on your mind
never ever any time

Oh yeah

so fathers be good to your daughters,
daughters will love like you do, yeah
girls become lovers who turn into mothers
so mothers be good to your daughters too.

boys you can break
find out how much they can take
boys will be strong and
boys soldier on
but boys would be gone
without warmth of a woman's good good heart

on behalf of every man
looking out for every girl
you are the god and the weight of her world
on behalf of ever man
who's looking out for every girl
you are the god and you are the weight of her world

so fathers be good to your daughters,
daughters will love like you do,
girls become lovers who turn into mothers
so mothers be good to your daughters too
so mothers be good to your daughters too
so mothers be good to your daughters too

I never met my father. He left my mother before I was born and he died before I could meet him.
I just can say that I can't stop crying when I listen to this song.
I wish he could have listened to it.

Now I can't love anybody.

The meaning has already been posted. I just wanted to say . . When i hear this song I always think he says "Girls become Lemons who turn into Melons"
Instead of "Lovers" and "Mothers"
Listen to it, Don't tell me it does not sound like that!

Hahaha I'm not sure why but this song finally clicked for me. Like many of you I think he realizes that there's somethings you can't do anything about when it comes to a girls behavior. It's something learned and engraved by all male figures of their pasts. Me and my dad have a great relationship, but it's always been hard to get his attention. So when he would pay attention to me, it was just the best feeling. That same experience has followed me with guys. Whether I'm interested in them or not. I don't strive for attention by any means, but it's special when I do get it from a guy. That's just my personal reflection.

xCheckThatBeatx i think is right. John is saying that fathers need to love their daughters so that the daughters can grow a trust towards men. I love how the beginning of the song John says that it his not his fault that the girl will not love him back and that it is all the parents fault for a girls issues. A little narrow minded, yet it shows how big a a deal it is for parents to love their children.

Well here's my input:

I think he;s found this wonderfull girl who is just amazing but she's had troubles at home like maybe her dad walked out on her, and her mother. So she needs to get her life back and stable. And when John starts singing:
"boys you can break
find out how much they can take
boys will be strong and
boys soldier on
but boys would be gone
without warmth of a woman's good good heart"
I think he's saying boys could take the pain if they had someone else who loved them but girls are more breakable at heart but after time they would be fixed and healed.
And as for the chorus, He's saying for every father to be good to their baby girl and to treat her right because if he doesn't she might not love another man.

Now I'm done! (:

This song is about a girl who knows she has issues, with men in particular. She is warning a man interested in her about this ahead of time. She wants him to walk into the relationship with open eyes (realistically). She wants him to know that her issues have nothing to do with them, but they will effect their relationship (no matter how loving he really is). She wants him to know this isn't his fault, he's just going to have to be patient and understand her.

"boys you can break
find out how much they can take
boys will be strong and
boys soldier on
but boys would be gone
without warmth of a woman's good good heart"

She's warning him ahead of time that she's very fragile. She's easily hurt and can't handle very much before she breaks.

"on behalf of every man
looking out for every girl
you are the god and the weight of her world
on behalf of ever man
who's looking out for every girl
you are the god and you are the weight of her world"

This is the most truthful part of the entire poem. He's like a god in her world. He can make or break her. He has no idea the power that he has in his hands.

Come on guys. Yes, some of it may SOUND sexist, but its completely obvious that that wasnt the point of this song. He's just telling men not to treat girls like crap, thats it! If youre sooo feminist, then why do you have a problem with that? He doesnt mean that ALL girls become lovers and mothers etc, just the one hes talking about! Calm down!

Wow, there are a lot of people who know nothing about psychology posting in here.

It is a fact of life that childhood trauma like abusive or abandoning fathers have effects on women AND men. Ask any therapist. Ask any child psychologist. These are facts. It's just like sexual abuse. Children who are sexually abused are much more likely to grow up to be abusers.

And all this crap about this song being sexist? Please. The feminist view is actually hurt by this kind of criticism. Men and women are biologically and emotionally different. It's ridiculous to try and act like they're not. They react to events in different ways. It's natures way of maintaining the species. It doesn't mean that either one is better than the other, it just means they're better at different things.

This is a great song! But some of the lyrics are wrong. Even if it's not important, I've got to say it. Some of them are major differences, like an entire verse. Little things being the 'I' in the beginning.

I know a girl
she puts the color inside of my world
she's just like a maze
where all of the walls all continually change

and I've done all I can
to stand on the steps with my heart in my hand
Now I'm starting to see
maybe its got nothing to do with me

fathers be good to your daughters
daughters will love like you do
girls become lovers who turn into mothers
so mothers be good to your daughters too

Oh you see that skin
it's the same she's been standing in
since the day she saw him walking away
now she's left
cleaning up the mess he made

so fathers be good to your daughters
daughters will love like you do
girls become lovers who turn into mothers
so mothers be good to your daughters too

boys you can break
find out how much they can take
boys will be strong
and boys soldier on
but boys would be gone
without warmth of a woman's good good heart

on behalf of every man
looking out for every girl
you are the god and the weight of her world

so fathers be good to your daughters
daughters will love like you do
girls become lovers who turn into mothers
so mothers be good to your daughters too
so mothers be good to your daughters too
so mothers be good to your daughters too

i love this song-it's so fitting. i think it's about when a girl is broken...that sounds very strange-but when a girl's spirits or dreams or heart is broken...and she meets a boy, and the boy has to pick up the pieces and mend it. well...he chooses to or not. but, its on the soundtrack of my life. haha. Demi Lovato covered this song (she re-wrote parts of it to make it work for a guy...but of course you can't change the chorus), but its awesome, so if you look it up on youtube...its exquisite. Covers usually aren't very good, but she and joe jonas did a knock out job.

i think that you guys all need to shut the hell up and stop calling him sexist. this song is from HIS perspective, and has good meaning and intention. what, do you want him so sit around and sing 'boys will be strong, but yeah... some of them wont... so sorry that i'm being sexist'? uhm, no, you don't thats stupid. he's trying to get a point across that parents need to be good to their children, and that their actions have a deep impact on their child's life... whether it be a boy, or a girl thats been walked out by their mother or father, its going to effect them,... it most likely will strain a relationship(or, anything really) because their not going to trust their significant other. or maybe their just going to be messed up emotionally. and if the person on the retrieving end cares the way they should their going to do everything to try to fix everything... but its not really about them at all ultimately.

If anything John is highlighting the plight of daughters who grow up without fathers. Not all of them will face problems but the one about whom he sings sure did.
Also he says mothers be good to your daughters too.
He also highlights their importance in the thing. I think he is talking to fathers particularly be cause he himself is male and has maybe in his life seen too many women broken because of fathers who leave. So this is his heart wrenching plea to them.

boys you can break
find out how much they can take
boys will be strong and
boys soldier on
but boys would be gone
without warmth of a woman's good good heart

This I believe is what is dividing the people on this string.
I for one think that what John says when he says boys are strong and so forth is not so much that they are but that they behave as expected ie putting a front of strength etc but without the love of their mothers they would be gone. Now gone here to me means so many things ..could be emotionally unavaiable men, leave home, lost members of society. If anything this verse shows the interdependence between the sexes in a family unit. And becoz mothers are normally the nurturers it means in order for a girl to become a woman who is a nurturer she needs to have a loving father and in turn in order for a boy to become a man with heart he needs a loving mother.See interdependence. Now before anyone says but I never had a mother or a father or both, well which ever older man or woman is in one's life. As for single parent families I am sure the meaning could extend to older other sex relative who was an influence when growing up.

Aggie2008: "Females are more emotional than men, it's a fact..."

shocking, the sexist thinks that sexism doesn't exist in this song!

i'd be interested to know how this "fact" has been proven. you do know that that is a requirement of a "fact," right? and what a strange choice of words, opposing "females" to "men."

This song is about sexism and rape. John mayer is a chauvinistic son of a bitch who thinks all women are subject to cleaning houses and having kids. Hes a sexist pig.

I think some of you guys are looking way to deeply into this song, it's not misogynistic nor is it sexist. It's a simple song with a broad perspective, you just want it to be sexist and looking for something that's not there.

The truth is this song fits a lot of females I know and have dated and are friends with. There's an exception to every rule but there is a rule in the first place.

Most girls I know look up to their fathers, their fathers mean everything to them, hence the God reference, poor choice of words? Maybe? But what other word would fit with the flow of the song?

Females are more emotional than men, it's a fact and I'm a pretty emotional guy. Most people who don't have great relationships with their parents usually don't have great relationships period, a guy has an issue with his Mom so he has problems with women.

A girl has problems with her dad, so she has problem with men in general. Again you could be an exception but just because you are don't assume everyone else is like you.

"I'm obviously in the minority here, but this song, quite frankly, makes me want to puke. "Oh, please, be careful with the poor fragile girls; they can't take being hurt the way boys can! And we men need them to be in good shape so they'll be willing to fuck us when they grow up!"

Mysogynistic bullshit, all of it. "

@Gravity Deviant: I agree with you. It's ridiculous. "girls become lovers who turn into mothers?" What the hell is that about? This just perpetuates an obsolete and negative gender role.

simply put,
recently my father left our family. he has left a big ugly mark on my life. the man i've been with for 3 years has been so patient and loving with me when i'm trying to work this all out. he is the god and the weight of my world. i think the lines that really put their finger on my story are "Oh you see that skin
its the same shes been standing in
since the day she saw walking away, now shes left, cleaning up the mess he made." I think that explains where i'm at. as for the line "on behalf of every man
looking out for every girl
you are the god and the weight of her world"
that's my man, right there.

honestly i used to not like this song because i thought it was almost happy-go-lucky or something, but now after looking at the lyrics i realize its about how the way parents treat their daughters affects the way they love people in the future, and that is completely true.
