Lyrics for Bigger Than My Body as interpreted by spickly

Bigger Than My Body Lyrics
This is a call to the color-blind
This is an IOU
I'm stranded behind a horizon line
Tried to be something true

Yes, I'm grounded
Got my wings clipped
I'm surrounded (by)
All this pavement
Guess I'll circle
While I'm waiting
For my fears to dry

Someday I'll fly
Someday I'll soar
Someday I'll be something much more
Cause I'm bigger than my body gives me credit for

Why is it not the time?
What is there more to learn?
I've shed this skin that I've been chipping at
And I've never quite returned

Yes, I'm grounded
Got my wings clipped
I'm surrounded (by)
All this pavement
Guess I'll circle
While I'm waiting
For my fears to dry

Someday I'll fly
Someday I'll soar
Someday I'll be something much more
Cause I'm bigger than my body gives me credit for
Cause I'm bigger than my body now

Maybe I'll tangle in the power lines
And it might be over in a second's time
But I'll glady go down in a flame
If the flame's what it takes to remember my name

Yes, I'm grounded
Got my wings clipped
I'm surrounded (by)
All this pavement
Guess I'll circle
While I'm waiting
For my fears to dry
Wait for my fears to dry

Someday I'll fly
Someday I'll soar
Someday I'll be something much more
Cause I'm bigger than my body
I'm bigger than my body
I'm bigger than my body now

I think I'd like this song more if John Mayer didn't sing it. Coming from him, it just seems too obnoxious. I'd rather hear an underrated, struggling artist sing about how they're going to make it someday than an overrated, established one. I didn't like HEAVIER THINGS at all, it was much too jazzy for me and it just didn't live up to any earlier stuff. Maybe JM, who always wanted to be a jazz artist, figures he can just turn jazz now that he has a large fanbase. (Would most of his 'fans' even notice?) But it's not up to me to question his methods...

I think the last line of the chorus is "Wait for my fuse to dry" not "Wait for my fears to dry"

for ValIsAllThat :
i doubt he is nessecarily singing about himself in this song. I think that hes speaking for aspiring artists or just people in general.

I don't even look at it as being about him musically you know? I think it's about being more than people think you are, having more too you. 'i'm bigger than my body gives me credit for', it's about breaking out and showing what you really are compared to what you seem to be, kinda thing.

i think this song is about wanting 2 achieve the impossible and looking like u cant do it but having the heart to do it. it can give u the confidence 2 do something that no one thinks u can do.

I think Tylera is right.
I dont believe he is talking about making any physical accomplishments at all (making it in the music industry), its about making spiritual accomplishments...
He is singing about finding freedom from all the bullshit :) About realizing all our self doubts and negative beliefs are not true. That we really are bigger than our bodies give us credit for. There's no better way of putting it :)

ValIsAllThat:
Yea, jazzy? John's guitar playing is blues based...a far cry from jazz guitar. Know what you're talking about before you open your mouth. Or type on your keyboard.

Oh, and I enjoy this song...I like its theme...it's nothing amazing lyrically, but it's a fun song to listen to. I've always liked the main riff because it's not a typical pop song riff, its a nice little change.

i interpret it as being so much more than what people see you for. i think it kinda stems from the whole idea behind no such thing, actually kind of like the accomplished goal of no such thing. its one of those songs that make you wanna break out of yourself. your so much more than your body gives you credit for.

A great uplifting song. Definately a theme for anyone who is trying to prove themselves and what they are capable of. Not necessarily about himself, but more about what he thought at one point, when someone doubted his skills.

Looking in the liner notes of the CD, the "target area" of this song is the arm. I had no idea what that meant, until I realized that the symbols have meanings. (I just read Pullman's His Dark Materials series.) So the arm most likely means Strength. So this is a song about Strength.

VallsAllThat does have a reason though but i\'m not taking any sides. Heavier Things being his second album is a continuation of a singer/songwriter trying to find \"that sound\" or \"that thing\" ...whatever that thing is that feels like home.
Anyways onto Bigger Than My Body. Jammerfan has it basically right on that the song is about power. John said at a live show that to have power, you\'ve gotta make it yourself. \"If you don\'t, people try to take it away from you.\" Trying to prove yourself and very much knowing you\'re \"bigger than [your] body gives you credit for\".

I like this song but an observation is called for: It seems to me to be the only Top 40 song he released without the pre-conceived notion that it would get him laid e.g. Daughters, Your Body is a Wonderland etc.

john mayer is talking about how he's huge right now, but pop music is not john mayer. he wants to be a legend. he'll go down in a flame if it's what it takes to remember his name, tangle in power lines is him dying and over in a seconds time is a quick death, a lot deeper guys, come on... he wants to be what he wants to be, he's huge everyone loves him... but it's a ton of teenage girls... rfs and heavier things are pop albums, take notice, jm3 is not pop, his new stuff is gonna be great, the record industry controls artists, IE grounded and wings clipped... and he's wanting to break away from that control, just get ready for the new album and you'll see i'm right ;-)!

To Vallsallthat. Being an artist is trying new things and doing the music you love. So what if JM want's to try something jazzy. His version of jazz is fresh and new. I really think that you should stop judging things when you have really no idea what you are talking about. JM is a huge jazz fan, and incorporating that into his present music is nothing short of creative and amazing. Try not to embarrass your self again.

This is one of the most uplifting songs ever. My parents can be so condescending to me.
But when I feel useless and not good enough, I just listen to/ think of this song and Im reminded that right now, yes, Tthere might not be much I can do. But someday I'll really find my voice, I'm more than I seem from the outside.

I think John Mayer has a smoky, luminous effect to him. The song is about him feeling "grounded", about struggling to make it. He feels as if one day he will find his break, his one true calling. I think that this song can be interprated in many ways. As, being actually grounded, as struggling to find a meaning, or as simply not fitting in. That is one of the reasons I like his songs. They can be interprated to fit many different situations.

I saw John Mayer live yesterday and this was the first song he sang...it was absolutely amazing. This is one of my favorite songs from Heavier Things. I pretty much agree with the idea that it's about achieving something nobody thinks you can. It's kind of about being the underdog or unlucky one who rises above the odds to become successful despite past failures.
