Lyrics for Clarity as interpreted by spickly

Clarity Lyrics
I worry I weigh three times my body
I worry I throw my fear around
But this morning there's a calm I can't explain
The rock here has melted, only diamonds now remain

By the time I recognize this moment this moment will be gone
But I will bend a light pretending that it's somehow lingered on
Well all I got's

And I will wait to find if this will last forever
And I will wait to find if this will last forever
And I will pay no mind when I won't and it won't because it can't
It just can't
It's not supposed to

Is there a second in time that I looked around
Did I sail through or drop my anchor down
Is anything enough to kiss the ground
And say I'm here now and she is here now

So much wasted in the afternoon
So much sacred in the month of June
How 'bout you

And I will wait to find if this will last forever
And I will wait to find that it won't and it won't it won't
And I will pay no mind, worry about the waiting weather
And I will waste no time remaining in our life together

First off, John doesn't drink or do ecstacy or anything like that. any real John Mayer fan would know that.

Secondly, he did say that it's the song that describes him the most as a person, but it's still confusing as to what the actual lyrics mean and exactly how it describes him.

John definatly sounds like he's reminiscing about his life. The first verse sounds like how things used to be bad and got better. and bringing that ecstacy connection in, his current life could be a state of ecstacy, not so much sexual but just unbelievable happiness. And it seems like he doesnt want it to end ("And I will wait to find /If this will last forever") it could be about fame, a relationship or both. I think he relates to him as a person by showing his outlook on life. i think the whole second verse says something about either always finding the good times or holding on to them. i'd say more towards holding on to them ("bending light"= illusion or possibly reflecting actually but illusion was my first thought)
random note: my best friends gutair teacher knew John at Fairfield High when John was an underclassman. and my math teacher was a freshman/sophomore when John was a senior/junior.

i was at a show of john's lately..and before playing this song..he went into one of his talking to the audience moments..he was saying to everyone in the audience "that the summer was almost over..and i hope that everyone of you had a moment this summer where you had no worries on your mind and were just free..and in your mind all you heard was Ooh ooh ooh ooh!"..i cried..so basically this song means..he had a moment of freeness and no worries..but he knew that feeling wouldnt last forever

This song is basically a 4 minute tribute to that few second feeling of bliss one seldom gets. He said it's like when you walk outside, and everything just feels perfect. For that short moment, your life, your works, your happiness and your struggles all align and make perfect sense. Beautiful song.

As for the ectasy statement, there are so many types of E out there with so many different names that I bet there is one called Clarity.

As for the song, in general this song is about those moments in our lives when we see things clearly and suddenly in focus in terms of everything in our life and our spirituality, etc. We try to hold onto those feelings but they are eventually diluted and disappear but they leave us with a great sense of resilence when it happens.

At least hat's what I got from this song.

Cheers

to me this song is about a wonderful relationship that you know is doomed from the start. there is no possible way it can last, but hell, you plan on enjoying every minute of it that you can

i like what bluedevilkc said.... i love that feeling in the summer when you feel like everythings perfect. and the way john mayer describes it as only hearing "oooh ooh" in his head.. its a perfect description of the way you feel. definitely one of my fav songs by john mayer.

to me this song means exactly what alanisisathief said .. everytime i hear this song it brings back special memories I shared with my last guy, one night out with him, the first time we hooked up togther.. heard this song in his car.. and all i remember thinking/feeling was that I didnt want that night to end and how perfect and special that night was to me... well our "relationship" was brief but must say I enjoyed every minute of it .. and this song certainly descibes this all.. :)

to me this song is about a time where life sucked really bad and you weren't sure how to cope with things...and then something good happened and you're just at peace with the world...i dunno that's just what it made me think of when i heard it for the first time.

this song is about an affair :o)

he knows its not going to last and this is the first moment he's really realizing it, it's really becoming clear to him. he never took the time to really look at it until this moment ("is there a second of time i looked around? did i sail through or drop my anchor down?") the wasted time in the afternoon is the time they spent together- wasted because it's not going to amount to anything, etc.

i don't know, i think i read it in a magazine somewhere and it really made sense that way. whatever works. :o)

it's a great song! one of my favorite John tunes.

i love this song. i totally agree that its about realizing how happy and carefree you are at certain moments outside in the summer. but then its sad, because the feeling wont last. its bittersweet.

I read into the lyrics a little differently than some others have suggested, and maybe different from what John meant to say. I got from the song the message that the clarity is finally accepting life for what it is, enjoying the moment rather than resisting or resenting it, good or bad. You have to just take life as it comes and dont dwell on the past or the future.True happiness lies in the journey, not the destination. So dont waste time thinking you'll live forever, because you wont, you can't, you're not supposed to.

I love this song! Everyone (including John) is always talking about how Clarity is such a positive and sunny song, but I see it a little differently. Even by the end of the song, I think the character/John hasn't lived in the moment and is still trying to learn to stop worrying. He's trying to be in the moment, but is still thinking "This is fun ... but it's gonna end soon." I feel the same way and can relate to Clarity so much.

I agree with what everyone else is saying, but I think its alot more of John becoming happy with himself and possibly a relationship that isnt very serious. The line "So much sacred in the month of June" kinda makes me think "I dont need to get married to be happy, I'm okay with this." And he keeps repeating "I will wait to find if this will last forever", like he's expecting it to not amount to much, but he's hanging on just in case, and again, he is okay with that.
Just a shot in the dark, though...
