Lyrics for Run as interpreted by Meyan

Run Lyrics
I'll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done

And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere
Away from here

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbye
I nearly do

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

Slower, slower
We don't have time for that
All I want is to find an easier way
To get out of our little heads

Have heart my dear
We're bound to be afraid
Even if it's just for a few days
Making up for all this mess

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

this song is inspiration to me. i jus saw snow patrol at the QMU in glasgow on saturday and the whole crowd belted the chorus out at the end. i can relate to the lines :
"Have heart my dear
We're bound to be afraid
Even if it's just for a few days
Makin' up for all that's less"
it reminds me of a girl i liked but due to complications with other people it never happened.. and we both liked each other at different times.. it was jus crap but i always remembered that line as if we could jus run away for a wee while and realise how much we seemed right for each other.. its a bit sad i know! but thats life

I agree I love this song and i can relate to the lyrics,
i think we have all been at that situation where we are afraid to love because of the pissible outcome.
"Snow Patrol" is a great band.

Well, I've been dating this girl for coming up on 5 months now. I'm going to school for 6 weeks this summer at Duke University. She's leaving the weekend before to go on a mission trip with her church. That's 7 weeks apart. This song, especially the quote in light up's post, speaks to both of us, as we are scared as to how we will manage for 7 weeks apart. I know, i know... its just 7 weeks... but for us... thats a long time.

this is a great song, but there are some lyrics missing. In between the "Louder, louder..." and the "Have heart, my dear" parts is another stanza that goes:
"Slower slower
We don't have time for that
All I want is to find an easier way
To get out of our little heads"

i think its that someone in the relationship is dying, or that both members are commiting suicide, there seems to be images ofdeath surrounding the song! a great band a single of the year maybe

This song is amazing..... I don't think I could ever get sick of it. Everything about it seems perfect, and the build-up in the chorus just gives me chills.

I agree with g4m8i7, I always thought the song was about leaving someone you really care for, but still having hope that in the end it will all work out ('I know we'll make it anywhere'). I think they're getting ready to leave each other and won't meet again for a while ('Then we really have to go' ... 'We don't have time for that'). And also, when he sings 'Louder, louder, we'll run for our lives' it's like they are wanting to escape from everything else and just stay how they are at that moment, like their lives will not be the same without each other.

I think this is about having to split up with someone because one or the other has to move away a fair distance, which would mean it's impossible to continue a relationship.

"To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we said our long goodbyes
I nearly did"

This to me is saying that because they still really love each other, it really hurts having to say goodbye, but in this case they have no choice. For me the chorus is basically saying no matter what happens, there'll always be a place in my heart for you, and I'll always think about you.
"Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say"

I think that is the dude's thoughts on like running away together, but really deep down they know that they can't do that, as much as they'd love to.

Pfff...Totally love this song, brings back good and bad memories for me. Still not bored of it, never will be

yes i totally agree this song is about a break up but neither party wants to end it...its as if the other party needs to go away and cant do anything about it and he is telling her to put her chin up hence 'light up light up as if you have a choice' perhaps her family is moving far away...this is such a beautiful song...i love coldplay and im beginning to love snow patrol

i interpret the lyrics "Light up, light up. As if you have a choice" as though he's speaking to someone who is so bright and radiant and amazing, saying something like 'even if you TRIED, if you "had a choice", you couldn't be dull.' if that's not what he meant, i don't wanna know. ;)

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble...and yes, the song is absolutely splendid. BUT...
if you look up other song lyrics from Snow Patrol, you'll see that they reference drug addiction a LOT.

And with that in mind, taking another look at these lyrics makes you kinda wonder...

"Light up, light up"...hmmmm, what could he be referencing here...??

In any case...as much as I'd like the lyrics to be something of deep, moving, qua-qua, good ol' fashion love song value...I kinda think that it mixes in the message of drugs into it.

Now, I could be wrong...but if you think I am, please look at at least 5 of their other songs' lyrics, and see just how often they reference drugs. Then think of a few different effects of drugs, think of some different terms or lingo people use to describe drugs and their effects, then take another look at these lyrics.

To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we said our long goodbyes
I nearly did
-"I nearly did"...I nearly did What? I think he means he nearly did, as in, he nearly said his final goodbye...as in, he had an overdose and almost died.

Even if you cannot hear my voice, I'll be right beside you...(possibly due to the effects of drugs? - hey, it's possible.

Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say
-deppressants/tranqulizers, maybe?

You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done
-Looking back on life...almost as if it's over...eh?

Well, sorry to ruin the joy of the song if that's what I did. But hey, I LOOOVED the song before, probably as much or more so than you, but after looking into their other songs' lyrics, I saw this song from a new perspective. Now, I could be wrong, and it would be cool if I knew I was wrong for sure, as I'd gain some more appreciation for the song. But I still love the song for how it sounds and the ability of his voice to make a deep connection to the listener.

Great song...but I dunno, does anyone see it the way I do?

sorry to burst your bubble suezzle but this song has absolutely nothing to do with drug addiction.

in regards to your first argument the line "light up light up" could be taken as a drug reference but is actually along the lines of "be happy" just like the phrase used by many "lighten up"

as for the "i nearly did" part, could you honestly not figure out what he nearly did?.... he nearly cried, i thought that was just a given though.

im not going to bother with the last few lines you mentioned because i have the true meaning of the song right from the songs composer/writer Mr. Lightbody, here are a few paragraphs from an interview/article on snow patrol including direct quotes:

But back to new single Run with lyrics like ''Light up, light up, as if you have a choice, even if you cannot hear my voice, I'll be right beside you dear.'' A love/break-up song maybe? Gary explained: ''It's really about family. It's wanting to protect them from all the people in the world that want to destroy. It's about running away and keeping them safe not about fighting which perpetuates the violent cycle. It's a hopeful song.''

The flares are a rather literal but effective interpretation of the chorus: “Light up, light up/ as if you had the choice/ Even if you cannot hear my voice/ I’ll be right beside you, dear.” It is, says, Lightbody, “a song about family, and wanting to protect them from all the bad things in the world. It’s an apocalyptic song. Can we go somewhere safe when everything goes mad? The opening line, ‘I’ll sing it one more time for you’, is about singing my kid to sleep. I don’t have a kid, but I hope I do one day”.

i hope this clears everything up

Hmmm, I guess...
but it still itches my mind that a good portion of his other songs are about drug addictions and problems associated with them.
How do you know, that, only in order to get better publicity, he didn't just come up with new meanings that could very well fit that very loosely interpreted song? I mean, the lyrics are not by any means concrete, and singers have often been known to downplay the true meanings of their songs in order to get good publicity. All the time, when popular bands with really hateful lyrics are interviewed, they tend to downplay the negative message of their lyrics. They give interviewers completely different explanations of their songs than they do the audiences at their concerts.
Unfortunately, I have not been to a Snow Patrol concert...anybody ever been to one, and had the meaning of the song described to them by the band?

soz but i see this song as someone being deeply in love wif another and then losin them...it is a beautiful song and i dont really see the drug connection to it. i mean parts in the song "Even if you cannot hear my voice I'll be right beside you dear " and "To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry And as we said our long goodbyes I nearly did" to me shows that this person is sayin goodbye to someone for the last time and how hard it is for them to let go...

i donno, to me i think it's about someone dying. he loves this person. or maybe he's dying...
To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we said our long goodbyes
I nearly did

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

Have heart my dear
We're bound to be afraid

that's where i get my opinion from

It doesn't actually matter what the true meaning of a song is though. People relate to different songs in all kinds of ways, and people just state what they get from the song and how it relates to them.

The real meaning doesn't matter, it's what you get from it that's the important thing
