shhhh
c'mon, c'mon

my best friend's a butcher, he has sixteen knives
he carries them all over the town at least he tries oh look it stopped snowing
my best friend's from Poland and oh he has a beard
but they caught him with his case in a public place that is what we had feared

he severed segments and secretely liked that
he always had the time to speak with me I liked him for that
he severed segments and secretely liked that
he always took the time
he always took the time

c'mon now pussycat

my best friend's a butcher, he has sixteen knives
he carries them all over the town at least he tries oh look it stopped snowing
my best friend's from Poland and oh he has a beard
but they caught him with his case in a public place that is what we had feared

he severed segments and secretely liked that
he always had the time to speak with me I liked him for that
he severed segments and secretely liked that
he was growing on me
he was growing on me

The song is about Aaron Kozminski. A Polish butcher suspected of being Jack the Ripper. The song is most likely a metaphor for Paul Bank's dark side, which he has decided to disguise as Jack the Ripper. The character is "growing on him". The title of the song might also be an amalgamation of "Ripper" and "Poland". Also, it's said that the real Jack the Ripper used to ask people for the time. As the song says, "He always took the time".

General Comment:This is one oy favorite Interpol songs. Without knowing the meaning and hearing certain phrases, the song smacks of quiet desperation. I love it and the new re-issue brightens up the whole mix and the interplay of guitars bass and synths.

General Comment:I believe this song is about Roland Weary from Slaughterhouse Five.
"They caught him with his case in a public place." When Billy and Roland were caught as prisoners of war.

My Interpretation:I always thought his "best friend" Roland was a dealer.

    He gets caught.
"but they caught him with his case in a public place that is what we had feared"

    He was discreet.
"he severed segments and secretely liked that"
    Always available.
"he always had the time to speak with me I liked him for that"

General Comment:I really like this song, but, unfortunately I don't feel the mood from the song aligns with the lyrical meaning (assuming the Jack the Ripper interpretation, which I take as correct). But that's just me - maybe other people would disagree. I find it outstanding when the mood and the lyrics align. Rush was great at that in my view.

General Comment:If it's not about a friend named Roland from Poland who is a butcher, I don't know what it's about! ;)

General Comment:What a silly thing to fight about! Bobster, why do you care so deeply about direct evidence supporting an interpretation of a piece of art? Should every post on this sight contain links to substantiated evidence supporting each and every hypothesis and interpretation? I'm not attacking anyone here, I just find it intriguing. Bobster, you clearly pride yourself on the knowledge that you have on this subject (and many others I assume), isn't it enough for you to know these things? Or is the knowledge not really what you are after? It seems that more important to you than the knowledge is belittling those who don't possess the same knowledge, and subsequently affording yourself a sort of pedestal to stand on. You clearly are an intelligent individual and in my opinion that should be enough for ANY person. The fact is that most people don't possess the capacity to identify the things that (seemingly) come so easy to you. Your intelligence is limited only by your ego, just as it is with many intelligent individuals. You're smart, it's obvious. You don't need to rub it in anyone's face, they already know. Some of the interpretations left by others are of the sort that simply CAN'T offer solid, concrete evidence as they are based on a feeling or emotion. Short of talking directly to the writer (...), it is impossible to substantiate. Even if someone had spoken with the artist (as you claim to have done), the conversation itself is impossible to substantiate. So as you see, you are guilty of the same transgressions as those you accuse, albeit in a different manner. Good art spawns false interpretation because good art reaches the masses and appeals to them in a personal way. If you turn it into a research project, the art dies. I dare say that you do not want to be responsible for any fraction of that reality...

General Comment:Wow. What spectacular wannabe NYC hipsters.

This song is awesome. If you're fighting and throwing around ad hominem attacks here, you really shouldn't be allowed to live, much less being a pompous ass.
