I think I'm drowning
Asphyxiated
I want to break the spell
That you've created

You're something beautiful
A contradiction
I want to play the game
I want the friction

You will be
The death of me
Yeah, you will be
The death of me

Bury it
I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it

Our time is running out
And our time is running out
You can't push it underground
We can't stop it screaming out

I wanted freedom
But I'm restricted
I tried to give you up
But I'm addicted

Now that you know I'm trapped
Sense of elation
You'll never dream of breaking this fixation
You will squeeze the life out of me

Bury it
I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it

Our time is running out
And our time is running out
You can't push it underground
We can't stop it screaming out
How did it come to this

You will suck the life out of me

Bury it
I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it

Our time is running out
And our time is running out
You can't push it underground
We can't stop it screaming out

How did it come to this

General Comment:I think it's about a man arguing with his pregnant partner about her trying to abort her baby.

"Now that you know I'm trapped
    Sense of elation
You'll never dream of breaking this fixation"

never made sense to me. Add proper punctuation in there, and you get:

"Now that you know I'm trapped, sense of elation, you'll never dream of breaking this fixation."

It's like he's taking a weird pause to enhance his sentence, almost like saying "i am saying this angrily, FUCK YOU." That wouldn't make sense.

I like to think of it a little dirtier.
"Now that you know I'm trapped since ovulation, you'll never dream of breaking this fixation."

"since ovulation" not only makes the sentence complete, but changes the song and gives it power. It just makes more sense this way :/

My Interpretation:This song makes perfect sense whether purposely or accidentally. If you take it as a occult song. In the occult Saturn/Satan worship. Please take into account that the following is not my beliefs. But those of certain esoteric and exoteric religions.

The bible is used sometimes as reference because it’s literature is believed by certain ancient cults to not be taken “literally” but have another meaning, referring to the stars and our planets.

The esoteric occult/pagan belief is that the planet Saturn controls time and our reality.

    “I think I'm drowning
    Asphyxiated
I want to break the spell
    That you've created “

Our reality is not the “real” original reality created by god. But a “fake” reality created by Satan. Satan/Saturn created the illusion of time and space. In the bible it says “The world around us is in Satan’s power and control”. Which originally refers to the planet Saturn. Ancient Paganism is the worship of the sun and Saturn.

    “You're something beautiful
    A contradiction
I want to play the game
    I want the friction”

Satan was known as a beautiful angel. A contradiction in the terms that he was also wicked. The belief is that our souls are reincarnated into this reality. By being reincarnated into this reality we are in effect playing Satans game.

    “You will be
    The death of me
    Yeah, you will be
    The death of me”

The esoteric occult belief is that the soul never dies. Simply reincarnated. However the only time “we die” is when our body dies. That is in our living reality. The reality created by Satan/Saturn. In a reality depended on time, everything dies. The reason we die is because of Satan.

    “Bury it
I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it”

God in revelations is known to eventually get the better of Satan. So this is a wording to God himself. Telling god not to kill Satan/Saturn, because they want to keep living in this reality because they are addicted.

    “Our time is running out
And our time is running out
    You can't push it underground
We can't stop it screaming out”

Again, this is a response to god. Not to push Saturn underground. The planet Saturn does literally scream out. Search for “The sounds of Saturn” on youtube to hear recording by NASA. "we can't stop it screaming out"

    “I wanted freedom
    But I'm restricted
I tried to give you up
    But I'm addicted”

The esoteric occult belief is that we are restricted in this 3dimensional reality. Only when our souls leave our body that we are free. We can give up this reality by not being reincarnated. But they are addicted to this reality.

There is a belief that our leaders are also Saturn/Satan dark sun worshippers and they too want to keep us in this reality. But soon Saturn/Satan will be no more. Which means we are literally running out of time.

Notice also in the video that they are on a round table surrounded by rings, which could represent the rings of Saturn. The dancers representing our leaders.

My Interpretation:This could be interpreted in so many ways. To take it most literally, it's about erotic asphyxiation. It fits the lyrics perfectly. Read over again and you'll see.

    "Bury it
I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it"

"it" & "you" in the above lines make me wonder and I can think of "you" as addressed to God, religion (by an atheist) or a totalitarian or any anti-liberty/ anti-freedom form of government (by an individualist) and "it" as meant to be "the truth" in a philosophical sense of the term.

The lyricist sings about being asphyxiated & addicted (to what? seeking favors from govt. perhaps OR seeking peace from something religious which is psychologically healthy short-term but suicidal in the long-term) & thus bound, restricted (by the trap created by the govt./ the religion) which is in contradiction to his wanting (phil.) freedom. And thus he ain't being consistent & honest to his own self and his losing his life, his 'soul'. There's this divide between his sense of life and his explicit philosophy. He knows what the truth but is not courageous enough to stand for it.

personally I'd go for a generalized meaning of the lyrics- how the song makes me feel like when I listen to it. You have to hold on to your principles no matter what & everyday you have to act by those principles you hold to be right and be 'good', be true to yourself, introspect, self-reflect, gauge your virtues by the standards you hold to be 'good'. Since we're humans & not 100% perfect or consistent, it so happens at times that you're emotionally-driven & tempted to do things which your sane mind wouldn't otherwise allow you to. If at such moments, we manage to gain self-control and talk sense into ourselves, well and good! But when we act on such temptations, we're being self-destroyers and insulting our own values. Thus you may find something beautiful which is a contradiction; to act on such a temptation gives you only momentary pleasure.

General Comment:Religion, maybe? The song can fit with someone who has been religious, or is religious and just wants out but finds themselves unable to tear away. Just throwing that one out there for the sake of adding a different perspective to the mix. ;-)

Song Meaning:I love this song.Alot of people has said that it's about a drug addiction. It may be..because y'know in their old days Matt used to take shrooms/other drugs alot. But I personally think it's about a hard relationship. The whole song describes how he wants to escape from her pressure, but at the same time he still loves and wants her.

General Comment:I really doubt this is about something as simple as a relationship between the singer and love interest...

to me it's about dissention; the first portion is about being overwhelmed by the news media and the Bush administration at the time of 2003-2004 creating a climate of fear that way too many people bought into. The second stanza is about the relationship between USA and England, England bought in big time. The rest is resistance to keeping dissention down...

This song was written just post the start of the Iraq war, after the Bush administration whipped up the idea that Iraq had stores of WMD. I remember watching Colin Powell at the UN trying to sell the lie even he was not on board with:
    (articles.cnn.com/2005-08-19/world/… )

At the time way to many believed it and anyone who was questioning it was deemed either anti-patriotic or worse.

Now lets see how this gets flamed... :-)

My Opinion:It honestly didn't take me very long to pick up on this message. I think it's rather easy to interpret compared to other songs.

    I think I'm drowning
    Asphyxiated
    I wanna break this spell
    That you've created
    >> He's met a girl and instantly falls for her. This sort of attraction he feels can only be caused by a "spell", in that it does nothing but mess with his mind.

    You're something beautiful
    A contradiction
    I wanna play the game
    I want the friction
    >> He says that her beauty is a contradiction because it's what's made him fall in love with her as it also made him go crazy. It's apparent that she does things that toy with his mind because essentially, he's blinded by her appeal. Nonetheless, he wants to play her sick game of playing with his mind, making him believe she loves him back, and then taking it all away because she intrigues him so.

You will be the death of me (x2)
    >> She has him so bound that it causes him madness that will eventually lead to his death.

    (Chorus)
    Bury it
I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it
    Our time is running out
    Our time is running out
    You can't push it underground
You can't stop it screaming out
    >> Despite her evil game, he knows that she secretly lusts for him and that's why she keeps playing this act. He's saying that she can't hide her love any longer by toying with his feelings. It's almost like that elementary school relationship, where the little boys treat the girls rudely because they don't know how to express their feeling. That's essentially what she's doing.

    I wanted freedom
    Bound and restricted
I tried to give you up
    But I'm addicted
    >> He's so attached to her that he can't do anything else. She's like an addiction that he must give up, but it's impossible because he's in love too deep.

Now that you know I'm trapped
    Sense of elation
    You'd never dream of
    Breaking this fixation
    >> Her games extend further as she finally realizes how attached he is to her. She loves the attention and will never release him.

You will squeeze the life out of me
    >> This dramatizes the affect of her mind games on him.

    (Chorus)
How did it come to this?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah yeah yeah
    >> He never realized how far this would go on.

You will suck the life out of me
    >> This new, final phrase emphasizes the word suck, demonstrating his torture.

    (Chorus)
How did it come to this?

In a nutshell, this is a sexy song about a guy completely in love with a girl who is clever, and perhaps sick-minded, and loves the idea of a guy who adores her. She toys with his feelings to the point where he can no longer escape and is left feeling used and tortured.
Ooh ooh ooh yeah yeah yeah
