Lyrics for Ocean Breathes Salty as interpreted by zouyan

Ocean Breathes Salty Lyrics
Your body may be gone, I’m going to carry you in
In my head, in my heart, in my soul
And maybe we’ll get lucky and we’ll both live again
Well, I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know
Don’t think so
Well, that is that and this is this
You tell me what you want and I’ll tell you what you get
You get away from me
You get away from me
Collected my belongings and I left the jail
Well, thanks for the time, I needed to think a spell
I don’t think a while
I had to think a while
The ocean breathes salty, wont you carry it in?
In you head, in your mouth, in your soul
And maybe we’ll get lucky and we’ll both grow old
Well, I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know
I hope so
Well, that is that and this is this
You tell me what you want and I’ll tell you want you get
You get away from me
You get away from me
Collected my belongings and I left the jail
Well, thanks for the time, I needed to think a spell
I had to think a while
I had to think a while
Well, that is this and this is this
Will you tell me what you saw and I’ll tell you what you missed
When the ocean met the sky
You missed when Time and Life shook hands and said goodbye
(You missed) When the earth folded in on itself
(You missed) And said “Good luck
For your sake I hope heaven and hell
(You missed) Are really there, but I wouldn’t hold my breath”
(You missed) You wasted life, why wouldn’t you waste death?
(You missed) You wasted life, when wouldn’t you waste death?
The ocean breathes salty, wont you carry it in?
In your head, in your mouth, in your soul
The more we move ahead the more we’re stuck in rewind
Well, I don’t mind, I don’t mind, how the hell could I mind?
Well, that is that and this is this
You tell me what you want and I’ll tell you what you get
You get away from me
You get away from me
Well, that is that and this is this
Will you tell me what you saw and I’ll tell you what you missed
When the ocean met the sky
You wasted life, why wouldn’t you waste the afterlife?

"You tell me what you saw/And I'll tell you what you missed" is a great line... and this is a great song. Possibly the best on the album.

Another song from the album strongly showing thoughts of death. Another line that truely makes the religious think is "for your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. You wasted life, why wouldn’t you waste death? "

hey bukowski, i was just wondering if you knew who charles bukowski even is. I know of alot of people that just think its a modest mouse song title, or they found out the author from them and they go and read his books because its "cool" , pretty fucking stupid.

What a splendid song. "When time met life shook hands and said goodbye," is such a beautiful line.

If anyone is a true modest mouse fan, they should be embracing this album, not screaming 'sell out!'. Each album is different from the previous, and the most recent addition is no exception.

Keep floatin'.

To all of the above user comments, this lyric does not deserve your worthless blabberings.

not every song ever is about how a girl left or died the lead singer...

I don't have an exact interpretation but there are a lot of death and afterlife images much like the rest of the album. Just as always he's questioning heaven and hell and life altogether (Doin The Cockroach, Styrofoam Boot etc...). Just an awesome song with a lot of good lines and thoughts.

Chaswick was being sarcastic, guys. He like Modest Mouse and is glad they are becoming mainstream...

Anyways, good song. I'm not a huge fan of Modest Mouse, but I like their style and the chorus of this song is catchy.

popular or not, they are still a good band....am i right? good, then shut up. whats the difference if they make a lot of money or not. if that changes your opinion of their music then eat a dick, and if youre a girl, eat sweaty balls. and chaswick is right, it couldnt have happened to a better band.

I'll give this one a shot....

Your body may be gone, I’m gonna carry you in.
In my head, in my heart, in my soul.

I'd say that refers to understanding and thinking about somebody after they died ("I had to think a while"). That's basically the purpose of the song. The remainders of the verses explain wishes for a longer life or an afterlife, but a doubt for their existence. Then in the interlude there are metaphors for death:

when the ocean met the sky
when time and life shook hands and said goodbye.
When the earth folded in on itself.

And lastly a bunch of stuff about wasting life and the afterlife. I suppose that may be the lesson learned from death.

One of the better songs off the album, for sure.

When 'When time and life shook hands and said goodbye' explodes it is really very, very good. Also, this is definitely the classic Modest Mouse image you see both in 'Moon and Antarctica' shadowed, and I also have the image on my wall that I got in my 'Night On The Sun' single on vinyl.

This song has nothing to do with a girl, the "Get away from me" may make it seem like that but it is Modest Mouse expressing their feelings about Life/Death. "For your sake I hope heaven and hell.... are really there but i wouldn't hold my breath" That is stating that the religious are wasting their times and if the afterlife isn't like what they thought it was it was basically nought. "You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?" is stating that the religious basically wasted life praying to gods that did not exist, it is like a kick in the pants for those who's entire lives were spent praying to nothing but air.

This song is obviously about religion. As people have been saying, yes, this song is about people who waste their whole lives denying their natural urges to secure a spot in the afterlife, which may not even be there.

The line that gives it away the most would be the last one.

"You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste the afterlife?"

He's basically saying...you were dumb enough to waste your whole mortal life holding yourself to a set of rules, why wouldn't you waste the life you may or may not have after death?

As usual, Modest Mouse's message is loud, clear, and thought-provoking. *golf clap*

hm. i think if you could get past your phobia of "your" favorite bands becoming known by more than just you and a select few worthy others, then you might find out that there is a lot of good non-obscure music out there.

oasis, blur, radiohead, coldplay, smashing pumpkins, ect.

like any of them?
