Lyrics for Lover's Spit as interpreted by fallacies

Lover's Spit Lyrics
All these people drinking lover's spit
They sit around and clean their face with it
And they listen to teeth to learn how to quit
Tied to a night they never met

You know it's time
That we grow old and do some shit
I like it all that way

All these people drinking lover's spit
Swallowing words while giving head
They listen to teeth to learn how to quit
Better take some hand and get used to it

You know it's time
That we grow old and do some shit
I like it all that way

this is the first song i've ever from broken social scene. i think that this song is just about enjoying sex. when you enjoy sex, you enjoy the moment and the moment is all that matters.

possibly my favorite song of all time.

the strings make my mind wander.

I would have to agree that it is not making homosexual refrences...I think its just about the physical aspect of relationships...lacking the mental aspect.

homosexual...heterosexual. it doesn't really matter. it works either way.

and yeah leslie feist's cover is amazing...but the original never fails to take my breath away

this song is like the epiphany of realizing that you want more than just sex to connect with someone. One day you open your eyes to realize that you've been just experiencing physical closeness with another person for whatever reason.

Protection? Fear?

I think this song is beautiful and captures the reality of today. People have lost the ability to believe in love so they just fuck...and while this song is like an anthem to our generation...maybe its also telling us to want more. Its ok to want more. Its ok to want to experience emotional love and not just sex in order to connect with someone else.

And perhaps realize that while we hide our desire to actually love in fucking people we don't, we are holding ourselves back from truly loving ourselves and someone else so that we can have both: Sex and Love

I first heard this song in the movie Lie With Me ...great film.

It seems to me that this song is about the number of people in our "society" who live emotionally crippled because of an attachment they bear to affections that they may or may not have ever incurred - "tied to a night they never met". Furthermore, to fill the void - or lack of "Socratic ascension" in people's lives, as someone else commented - people often form vapid relationships; "swallowing words while giving head", or quelling communication, to veil their lack of genuine feeling for the other party.

"They listen to teeth to learn how to quit" seems to suggest that people attempts to wean themselves off the meaningless fornication and accompanied lusting they indulge in is futile, because little genuine advice is offered to them. To "listen to teeth" is probably a kind of wordplay, too, playing off the references to fellatio in the song.

The refrain, "You know it's time/That we grow old and do some shit/I like it all that way" seems to represent a pat rejection of the emptiness of a culture whose adherents squander their lives in temporal, potentially vapid, lust over others, especially in lieu of the last line in the second verse, which is bitingly sarcastic: "Better take some hand/And get used to it" (this could also be wordplay, as "taking hand" could entail receiving a handjob or, alternately, "taking someone's hand", i.e. relying on someone else to guide you through life". So, instead of indulging in said culture, the speaker has more genuine ambitions: he, and perhaps his partner, wants to "grow old and do some shit" - an understated paraphrase where "do some shit" likely means develop themselves, make art, have their love ascend to a higher plain, etc.

In a broader sense, the whole of Lover's Spit to me seems a retort to the vacuity of western society following the gradual dissolution of communal institutions and organized religion in the twentieth century (this is arguably borne of American values' fixation on the inalienable rights of the individual). Instead of them, the "freedoms" that young people in western societies have inherited constitute a lonely burden, and one which often leads into a life of continual existential searching for a greater meeting and continued dissatisfaction. On this basis, the song can be considered topically post-modern (or post-WWII, if that's your preferred label).

It's interesting that Kevin Drew has in numerous interviews voiced his frustration and impatience with the number of "hookups" that occur within the members of BSS and the ensuing drama. Given this, it's all the more likely that this song's message is something of particular relevance to his values.

It seems to me that some of you are spending too much time analyzing this song and not enough time getting laid.

In reference to n4398734's comment above, I think that it's a little bit shallow to reject the song entirely as something beautiful and meaningful simply because it is about homosexuality. in skimming the top layer of the song, it is pretty obvious that the main and immediate motivation for writing the song was fueled by fellatio, most likely between two men, but in reading in to the deeper layers there are a lot of undertones in the song that have a lot more to do with love and the selfishness that can sometimes go hand in hand with it, as well as the struggle to give meaning to a relationship, maybe even life in general than it has to do with anything homosexual. Usually when an artist creates a piece of work, the intention is to make their art something that is universal, that a lot of people can relate to. Saying that it is dampened by the fact that it is about homosexuality isn't right, because most mainstream things are directed by straight people, and gay people are expected to be okay with that. You don't see gay people complaining all the time because a lot of lyrics in songs focus on heterosexual love, because a song or a piece of art in general has a lot more to do with the message, the imagery, and the metaphors than it has to do at all with what immediately meets the eye. Everyone should be able to relate to what this song is actually trying to communicate rather than being transfixed with the shallow surface.

Even if Kevin Drew isn't gay, which he is obviously not since he is married, doesn't mean that the song might not be about homosexuality in some small way. and even if it is, thats okay.

here's my take, it's rather simple: the song is about how people use sex to replace intimacy and cover up a non-existent emotional bond when really that's what's most important in a relationship. i.e. swallowing words while giving head

and for everyone who thinks there has to be some gay connotations, it could be similar in that he's just saying that the physical aspect (gender) isn't as important as the bond

I always thought it was about basically giving head too, but as i read the lyric sit defiantely appears to be about meaningless love and stupid relationships.
I get mroe of an angry vibe about this song.
But yep.

It's a spiteful view of people in love, being told by someone who does not have love. Simple as that.

I don't really like the video...it's artistic and all, but its just really long and drawn out kissing and I feel like I just want the whole song to pick up its pace.

we all know this song mentions a blow job. i think the teeth part is saying how people can rush into things too fast, in relationships. like "they listen to teeth to learn how to quit" if something goes wrong during the physical stuff, or if its not good enough (like someone used teeth..), people just give up and move on. i believe this song is about relationships not being taken seriously enough. perhaps the songwriter experienced a relationship in which they put out and didnt perform well so the partner just moved on..

The video basically explains this song to be about love in general, but not in a spontaneous, meaningless way. The entire video is of one couple wearing wedding rings.
Hey, maybe they're both cheating on their spouses. Probably not.

Like a blunt smack to my proverbial face, this song revealed a profound truth to me. I believe the song is a revelation to the fact that people sometimes hide there emotions within songs, movies, etc. They sometimes wish or think that any song they are listening to is something that they are going through. But in reality they are not. They listen and absorb a song and then literally "Drink Lover's Spit" and are "Tied To a Night They Never Met" instead of "Growing Old And Doing Some Shit". If I may borrow some more of that lover's spit- "Wake Up Kids, We have the Dreamers Disease."

This song is about being lonely. It seems that everybody else has found love, except for him.
"All these people drinking lover's spit/ /They sit around and clean their face with it"
("drinking lover's spit"=kissing?)
It sounds like he is commenting all the other people around him that have found love and that it's time for him to do the same.
"You know it's time/ /That we grow old and do some shit"

i think its about looking at how people show affection.. and wanting to do it for yourself
'You know it's time That we grow old and do some shit' .. trying it for yourself.. giving head or sharing spit.. the video brings sensuality and curiousity. a longing of love and sharing it.
