Lyrics for Cause = Time as interpreted by fallacies

Cause = Time Lyrics
You come in, check my time
You for fornication crimes
I've seen your hope on television
Where you've been, you were not were
They've got tricycles in skirts
This is a mouth that needs religion

And they all want to love the cause
'Cause they all need to be the cause
They all want to fuck the cause

So take me down, down through this
Kill the common law that missed
This is the blood I love to share

Little pistols and companion halls
Desperation tentacles
I've been alone since '89

We've got a menstruating disguise
Then know three completes the five
This is a church that should believe

And they all want to free the cause
'Cause they all need to dream a cause
They all need to be a cause

You've got all and it's
Pretty good, but I
Seem to be in disbelief

You come in, check my time
You've got fornication crimes
I've seen your death on television
Cue immortal child like times
Separation is divine
Here is a strike beneath your knees

And they all want to love the cause
'Cause they all need to be the cause
They all want to fuck the cause

Take me down, down through this
Kill the white within the bliss
Here is a waiting room
That wants to save your life

And they all want to love the cause
They all need to be the cause
They all want to dream a cause
They all need to fuck the cause

I Like This Song. There's so much truth in these lyrics as stated how their stated. At a first listen, I think their talking about those preachers on t.v.? I'm not sure yet. Just got the cd, and it hasn't left my cd player.

I thought it was about all those priests sexually abusing the children. Good song, anywho.

i really believe this song isn't so much about the priests who abused the children but the media and public who didn't say a word about it for all those years. i mean sure it was hidden, but there were still a whole lot of cases before the scandal.
"And they all want to love the cause
'Cause they all need to be the cause
They all want to fuck the cause". I this is pointing to the people who jumped on the wagon...could just be me. i am inlove with this song.

It does seem like it's about the priests sexually assaulting the kids:
"Little pistols and companion halls
Desperation tentacles
I've been alone since '89"
To me that sums it up. Think sexual ;)

this was the first song i head by broken social scene and i immediatley fell in love with it. it is still my favourite song bby them ecause it brings back so much to me. it is so nice musically and also vocally. it's very catchy too. to me the song means something else rather than what he's actually talking about. i didn't know what he was talking about until i read the lyrics here. for me it was something totally different.
but now that i have read the lyrics i think he's talking about the church. about how going against it got you in a whole load of shit and you just got burned, back in the days. the cause is what everyone wants, which (in my opinion) is god or a connection with him. but it's in a modern-day mode, not 1400's mode. the "waiting room that wants to save your life" could be heaven and "separatuib is divine" could be dieing and leaving earth.
there's a lot of controversy in the song and my opinion changes about every single time i play the song, but overall he's talking about religion.
i like this song a lot.

i've always wondered about the underlying sexual and childish tone in the lyrics. i can definitely see this song being about the whole catholic priest pedophila scandal.
ex: "you got fornication crimes"
...and at first it says "i've see your hope on television" but later in the song the line is changed to "death on television." maybe that's about how the media woke up to the whole thing and it what used to be the church's hope through televangelism became their death through bad publicity. "they've got tricycles in skirts" seems to echo the whole thing about the children... and the line "this a mouth that needs religion" could basically be about a priest forcing a little kid to give him a blow job. ...it's really pretty fucking gross and i hope it's not just my mind in the gutter. "little pistols and companion halls, desperation tentactles" is pretty suggestive and the "i've been alone since '89" part could be from the priest's point of view since they became part of the church and couldn't marry or have sex or it could be from the child's point of view, isolated after the sexual abuse and unable to tell anyone for years. the church is actually mentioned later in the song and the whole "3 completes the 5" thing might have something to do w/ the holy trinity... or maybe not at all. it's hard to say. "separation is divine, here is a strike beneath your knees" seems to be from the abused children's point of view. the "strike beneath your knees" would be referring either to the child's height and their striking back against the priest years later by letting the truth out OR more likely it's referring to the fact that people pray on their knees and a strike from beneath that would basically be a non-religious/reformed christian, in this case the abused child letting the truth out.

it's possible the song has a much broader meaning about the church... the phrase cause=time still doesn't seem to have a lot to do w/ the catholic church and pedophilia. yeah so that's my 2 cents.

I really think it's about media, and how everyone wants to be the people that the media is following. all these celebrities who are being stalked every day and the people who just want to be them and want everything to do with them.
"They all want to love the cause
'Cause they all need to be the cause
They all want to fuck the cause"
TO me it just screams it.

BUt maybe I"m wrong. your other explanations sound good too.

One line not mentioned, and its a biggie:
"Kill the white within the bliss"
White=purity bliss=sexual
So, by getting sexual pleasure from the young boys, the preists were killing their innocence

at first i hadnt notice much else of the lyrics besides the whole needing/loving/fucking/being/dreaming the cause part, so i kind of thought it was about teenage protesters, or maybe kids in general
but i think the priest explanation works pretty well too - i hadn't noticed a lot of the church references until i actually looked up the words here

i think hes speaking from god's point of view. cause = time translates into god = cause, since god started time. they wall want to be the cause, cause they all love the cause, "You come in, check my time
You got fornication crimes
I've seen your hope on television
Where you've been, wore my word
They've got tricycles in skirts
This is a mouth that needs religion"
he sits down and watches us, and sees us wearing his word. we look silly in the way we do things, and this is a mouth that needs religion, so we create it. "So take me down, down through this
Kill the common law that missed
This is the blood I love to share"
he wants to come down, forget the laws, and see the bloodshed firsthand, he seeks to explain wars.

one thing i think of besides all the things mentioned is that people need something to believe in and be behind to pass time. to make everything seem worth it. therefore Cause = Time.

or perhaps the christian cause gives you eternal time.

and maybe the guy was molested in 89 or just gave up his faith in 89.

the "Desparation Tentacles" make me think of someone just swinging out randomly hoping to catch on to something because he's so desparate to believe in anything.

separation from church or faith is divine. maybe a political slant with church and state.

"You've got all and it's
Pretty good but I
Seem to be in disbelief"

song's definitely not only about molesting priests. or priest molesters. priests that molest.

I agree with inbetweenmolecules... talking about this song as if it pertains to that one church debacle isn't giving this band enough credit for some awesome lyrics...

I definitely think the most important line is the title... we all want to be the cause,etc... but really we all need to forget about it and go on with our lives because the cause is simply time...

living in the past, with our "fornication crimes", our "common law that missed", the inner struggle with religion, etc. is missing the point of life...

and that point is: be the cause (live in the present), and what happened in the past is no reason to think you can't make things different...

I think Cause=Time means as long as there is a "Cause" for you to stand for, you know, like religion you'll have more time to live (afterlife). So people devote their lives to a cause because they think it'll give them more time, but it's really just wasting the time they have? Like what inbetween mentioned about eternal time.

I think the song in general is about everything everyone said and more...it's sort of like multidimensional object, like a tessaract or somthing and each line has several different meanings, and your view of the song keeps moving and you keep finding new meanings every time.

It personally gives me a peaceful feeling and "Cue immortal child like times" reminds me of childhood, the feeling of being safe and carefree...like memories that will never die.

Guh...I have nothing to contribute, aside from the fact that I absolutely LOVE this song. I do get a feel that it's about people and their need for religion and beliefs, but it can be interpreted in so many ways.
