You come in, check my time
You for fornication crimes
I've seen your hope on television
Where you've been, you were not were
They've got tricycles in skirts
This is a mouth that needs religion

And they all want to love the cause
'Cause they all need to be the cause
They all want to fuck the cause

So take me down, down through this
Kill the common law that missed
This is the blood I love to share

Little pistols and companion halls
Desperation tentacles
I've been alone since '89

We've got a menstruating disguise
Then know three completes the five
This is a church that should believe

And they all want to free the cause
'Cause they all need to dream a cause
They all need to be a cause

You've got all and it's
Pretty good, but I
Seem to be in disbelief

You come in, check my time
You've got fornication crimes
I've seen your death on television
Cue immortal child like times
Separation is divine
Here is a strike beneath your knees

And they all want to love the cause
'Cause they all need to be the cause
They all want to fuck the cause

Take me down, down through this
Kill the white within the bliss
Here is a waiting room
That wants to save your life

And they all want to love the cause
They all need to be the cause
They all want to dream a cause
They all need to fuck the cause

General Comment:I'm french so my syntax might be off a little bit...

    We've got a menstruating disguise @
Then know three completes the five *
This is a church that should believe +

@ They've got '' menstruating disguise'' for the poor underage When a hymen get perforate, it result in a slight loss of blood...A kind of ''menstruation''.

*The three completes the five. Im pretty sure this line is about the replication DNA sequence... Because the DNA strands have a directionality, and the different ends of a single strand are called the "3 end" and the "5 end" When it's replicate the three end of of a new strand completes the 5 of another.DNA replication occurs in all living organisms and copies their DNA; it is the basis for biological inheritance. So this might be a reference to some priest who impregnated young girls and gave part of their DNA sequence to the babies... because a while ago there was few abortions... I think was illegal...

+This is a church that should believe. All the kids born from their misdemeanors should believe in fact...they are half-priest already ;)

My Interpretation:I believe that the true meaning of this song is unfathomable that no one would believe me if I wrote the whole thing.

Among other things, it's about a person who is being punished by the society of _________ry for having a daughter out of wedlock with a woman of 'questionable character.' They wanted the person to be innocent / virgin for a certain time in history. Killing his innocence (having sex with him) would bring this person back down to earth, clear him of his fake suspected charges, make him mortal, and give him a normal life again.

"cue a mortal child by time
    separation is divine
here is a strike beneath your knees"

Most adoption laws prevent the father from ever knowing / meeting the child for fear that the child may go to the father for money. If all worked out, the goal would be to have a common law family of three (girlfriend, daughter, father). It's a tragic story.

Look for the number 5 in other broken social scene song lyrics.

General Comment:I don't really care what this song means - I *love* the drums and guitars on this track. The entire song is one long crescendo into a cacophony of awesomeness. These guys can really write, _and_ play their axes! :)

(well, actually, I do care what the song means .. but I can never listen to the words long enough, I keep re-focusing on the instrumentals)

Lyric Correction:ummm... this is one of the best songs ever written. that is a fact, not opinion.

second, isn't the FIRST two lines...

"You come in, check my time
    You've GOT fornication crimes"

    (not "you for fornication crimes")

    am i wrong?

General Comment:The references to religion can't be taken at face value. It would be incredibly pedestrian to skewer religion with analogies about ... religion. Kevin Drew mentions traits about religion to mock something else entirely. So yes, he is talking about religion, but also about something else.

Based on the chorus, I had initially thought they were mocking the sudden ubiquity of "hipster" culture by likening it to blind religious faith.

Now I see the song's theme as using religious fervor as an analogy for right-wing politicians and media outlets selling political fervor.

Notice that it's never mentioned that people need the cause ITSELF -- just that they need to be it, feel it, dream it, fuck it. The cause itself isn't doing them any good, it's just their own determination to be obsessed with it that drives them on.

The "they" here are mid- or low-income Republicans who have been sold on ideas that will actually financially harm them -- such as measures that support the deregulation of big business -- by making it appear to be an issue of morality.

General Comment:"so take me down, down through this
kill the common law that missed
this is the blood I love to share"
and then "I've been alone since 89"

The only thing I can think of for this is if you look up common law marriage its stated that in Texas a new provision was added to the Family Code; either partner in a common law marriage has two years after separation to file an action in order to prove that the common law marriage existed. To use the provision, you must have been separated after September 1, 1989. I think it relates to that, maybe not Texas specifically but the law in general.

General Comment:This song is absolutely about the church and is more specifically a knock at the Catholic Church and priest hood. that much is evident. Does anyone know what "3 completes the five means"?

General Comment:Maybe that line about fornication crimes and then seen it on TV is a reference to televangelist like Billy Swaggart who are are holy and then get caught up in sex scandals and exposed. Could go along with that sort of repressing feels other people talked about. Like Freud said, if you repress some desire you have it may be expressed as the opposite I forget what it's called... Reaction Formation Theory? So ie. if you are a skeezy guy you may deal with it by being outwardly chaste/a religious figure.

ive pretty much came to the same conclusion about this song as everyone else, the catholic preist child molestation thing. if you read the lyrics and think sexually, it really comes together
