Lyrics for Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl as interpreted by fallacies

Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl Lyrics
Used to be the one of the rotten ones
And I liked you for that
Now you're all gone, got your make-up on
And you're not coming back

Bleachin' your teeth, smiling flash
Talking trash, under your breath
Bleachin' your teeth, smiling flash
Talking trash, under my window

Park that car, drop that phone,
Sleep on the floor, dream about me

Used to be the one of the rotten ones
And I liked you for that
Now you're all gone, got your make-up on
And you're not coming back

i love this song so much because it is so simple

"park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me "to me is just forgetting everything for somebody.

this fits so well to a 17 year old girl

i am in love with this song and slighly obsessed.

i dont think this song is at all abotu a lvoe relationship between a guy and girl, i think its more about how someone who you might have been friends with in elemntray school for example completely leaves you when shes popular.

this is most prominent in the line "used to be one of the rotten ones and i liked you for that, now you're all gone got your makeup on and you're not coming back."

i love this song a lot :)

it so simply explains how people get caught up in material things and you lose the kid that you fell in love with.

i think it's strange that everyone is offering their input on this song and its meaning. it's interesting to ponder, but i think that it's definitely broad enough that this song could apply to anyone or any situation. it's like everyone is offering their brilliant insight to a song that we will never know its origin or intended meaning, and that's okay that we don't.

the first time she says "now you're all gone got your make up on and you're not coming back" and she adds the "can't you come back?" right after, the desperate pain and utter hopelessness in that question is really apparent to me. the way she asks, you can tell she already knows the answer.

someone suggested that she is in fact singing about herself from her younger self's perspective. this had occured to me momentarily before, but the more i think about it now the more it seems to make sense over most of the other options.

i think it's amazing the dramatically evident change in mood and tone over the three basic sets of lyrics in this song. the first set "used to be one of the rotten ones and i liked you for that, now you're all gone got your makeup on and you're not coming back" emitts disapointment, and maybe even shame to some extent. the next set about "bleaching teeth" and "talking trash" it seems like she's becoming more angry and cynical of her behavior. and finally the last set, it almost seems like she is being haunted by the superficialness of herself and can't escape the "younger self" still living inside her, (who, by the way, is pretty pissed by now sounds like) and no matter how grown up she acts...she can't be happy inside because now she's all gone got her makeup on and she's not coming back.

i hope this never happens to me. it sounds like a really empty haunting feeling. sadly, it's kind of taking place but no matter what i refuse to be plastic!

I beleive Emily Haines is singing from her present self, to her past self (the 17 year-old girl) looking back with perfect hindsight, and a wistful sadness. Also, the repitetition of the lyrics reflects the repetition in adolescent life, the lack of variety that is maddening and numbing. Brilliant song.

This is such a unique song...the synth's that go along with her voice make it like nothing I have ever heard. Usually if they rearranged the voice as much as they did, it would sound cheesy, but it fits so well. The violins balances it all out. Of course, about growing up in teenage girlhood and the changes that you go through, and once you've reached an age you've lost the innocence you obtained "now your gone, got your makeup on, and your not coming back." as a female, i completely undrestand.

This song is simply amazing. this sounds so fucking corney, but wen im depressed i just pop in the cd and listen to it... well not depressed but in a mood where just things are going wrong, or im thinking about graduation (ive just graduated) and leaving every1. "now your all gone got your makeup on AND YOUR NOT COMING BACK" ... most powerful line in the song, wow bss--

good work

this song means a lot to me... my best friend when i was little was a guy, and during junior high and high school i went all prep and he went all rocker, and we kind of grew apart. but now we're 17 and we're reaching out to each other again, because we've found ourselves again, you know? anyway, this song is like him saying how stupid i was a few years back. (i was really stupid.)

I think this song is about a girl who used to be best friends with the singer, who is unpopular, before she became 'preppy' and popular and began, driving her car and wearing more make up and having a mobile phone and things. the singer wants her to be her best friend again, being rotten and unpopular together. thats my opinion....... kind of

It's internal stuggle, she liked herself before, when she was herself. Now shes putting on an act, because thats what most teenagers do. This is shown in the bleach on your teeth part. It took me a while to get that.

such a brilliant song. it feels like its about an adolescent uniqueness being stripped and replaced with the high school cliche "fake". The first person who recognizes the decietful behavior or their friend; instead of reacting angry or upset, follows the mood's upbeat portrayl of dissapointment but acceptanting that things have changed.
"can't you come back?" They don't regret, but want their friend to realize that they have hope.

i fell t hat this song is abour relaise how your lives have changed. all the sudden you stop and look around and realise that your real relationships are gone. i m still friends with the same people but they arnt who they used to be. this song speacks to me about the routine and expectations you get pulled into. for me the "cant you come back?" is morning for what has changed and i just hope it goes back. that one day you get past this point and strip all the junk away.
does it?

I've known of this song since I was 15 but I decided to wait until turning seventeen to finally listen to it. So I finally did, the day after my 17th birthday (this new years day.) And I'm glad I waited, because of the events with a boy that took place on my birthday I understand this song so much more than I would have. I don't know how to describe it, but BSS really hit the nail on the head with this song. It's everything I've been feeling.

i love the repition, ive never heard a song quite like this one before

its so relatable about watching someone outgrow you, you just want them back but theyve advanced (now youre all gone got your makeup on and youre not coming back)

all you want is for them to come back down to you like old times (cant you come back?)

but mostly you dont want them to ever forget about you (dream about me)
