My heart is on my sleeve
Wear it like a bruise or black eye
My badge, my witness
That means I believed
Every single lie you said

Cause every pane of glass that your pebbles tap
Negates the pains I went through to avoid you
And every little tap on the shoulder for attention
Fails to mention I still hate you

But there's a light on in Chicago
And I know I should be home
All the colors of the street signs
They remind me of the pickup truck
Out in front of your neighbor's house

She took me down and said
"Boys like you are overrated. So save your breath"
Loaded words and loaded friends
Are loaded guns to our heads.

You want apologies, girl you might hold your breath
Until your breathing stops forever
The only thing you'll get
Is this curse on your lips
I hope they taste of me forever

With every breath I wish your body
Will be broken again

My Interpretation:1 - "My Heart is on my sleeve"
Expression returning the habits of Middle Age. He is saying that he tought that he found the one he loved.
2 - "Wear it like a bruise or black eye"
But she probally wasnt, and the idea that he loved her hurt him bad.
3 - "My Badge, my witness"
And thats what he got from this relationship, his badge. His heart wounded is his witness of that sad memory.
4 - "means that I believed Every single lie you said"
His felling deceive him. And the sad thing is that she probally maked him think she loved him too. Thats her lie.
5 - "Cause every pane of glass that your pebbles tap negates the pains I went through to avoid you."
The Pane of glass could be their good moments. And pebbles indicate that the thing that she did was leave him for some other guy.
6 - "And every litt le pat on the shoulder for attention fails to mention I still hate you"
He is just not over about what happened. and now he is hurt and cant forgive her.
    7 - "But there's a light on in Chicago
And I know I should be home"
Deep inside he know there is a hope for their relationship. And he know he should forgive her.
    But..
8 - All the colors of the street signs
They remind me of the pickup truck out in front of your neighbor's house
When he thinks of forgiving her, the bad things she ve done, and specially the idea of her being with this other guy in front of her neighbor hurts too much and end any possible hope for the relation.

So basically is a story of a boy having his heart broken for the first time probally.

General Comment:For some reason i don't believe that the "pickup truck out in front of your neighbor's house" is being interpreted right. I actually think it's just a pickup truck that belongs to one of her neighbors. I don't think it's the narrator's truck or her other guy's truck. Just a neighbor's truck parked in his own driveway lol. It just sounds like a description of where she lives.

My Interpretation:Let me just say, before i start into this, that i absolutely love this song. it has been my favorite for four plus years, and i don't see that changing anytime soon. The reason why i was first attracted to this song was definetally the totally sick rhythms, the way that the complicated, fast wording flew past to the point where i had no idea what he was saying for the first six months that i knew this song. That was what got me interested, but what made me fall in love with this song was the way that i could relate it to my experiences.
jeez. i sound like a real girl. =P
anyways, this is just my interpretation. I don't know if its right. its probably not. but i don't care. i know its selfish. i'm basically molding into what i want it to be so that it fits my life. but i'm pretty sure that even though pete probably had a very specific sequence of events in mind when he wrote this, and a very specific person, i'm pretty sure that he wouldn't care if one teenage girl misinterpreted it on a song meaning site. really.

I think this song is about a boy being in deep love with a girl. his "heart is on his sleeve", and he gets hurt, "bruise or blackeye". obviously he's hurt because she breaks up with him, even though he's still in love with him, telling him that "boys like him are overrated" and him, trying to work it out so she tells him to "save his breath". Even though she hurts him, and she seems to be moving on, he's still in love with her. He doesn't want to get hurt again, so he hates her and tries to avoid her as much as possible. but she tries to get him back, & he can't help but still want her. So everytime she taps on his windows with pebbles, it doesn't matter how much pain she caused him, he's going to go down and be with her because he still loves her. And every time that he taps her on the shoulder for attention, the attention that he craves, its kind of like he's being fake, obviously not showing her that he hates her for hurting him.

I think its basically him recollecting all of this on the road, thinking about her & how he still wants her, thinking about her so much that everything is reminding him of her. maybe knowing that if he really wanted to, he could go back to chicago and be with her. "there's a light on, in chicago, and i know i should be home, and all the colors of the street signs, they remind me of your pickup truck, out in front of your neighbor's house".

in a way, i think there's also that element of him wanting to hurt her back, and maybe that's why he's staying away. He wants her to never be able to get over him like he never got over her. "the only thing you'll ever get is this curse on your lips: i hope they taste of me forever". he's refusing to be with her so that she can feel the way that he felt when she hurt him.

it makes me laugh because of how much of my own life that i injected into this interpretation. thats why i like this song so much, i guess.
but then again, i'm just a stupid high school girl.

General Comment:I love this song. I love Fall Out Boy, and I have all the way since the beginning. Their old stuff is so good, this song is classic FOB, and you can hear such yearning in it. Compared to their newer stuff, you can tell they were so young when they wrote this, still filled with such excitement to see the world and play their music. Now it's a little different, the music's changed now that they attained the fame they wanted, but it's still quality. Each of their albums is like a commentary on their places in life at the moment. Such goodness.

    General Comment:HOLY SHIT!
I was listening (recently got into Fall Out Boy after all the hype) and recognized Justin Pierre singing on here!!!

if you don't know, he's the lead singer of Motion City Soundtrack!
He sings the "with every breath i wish your body will be broken again" part.
And very good i might add...

General Comment:" my heart is on my sleeve" is a metaphor. it means that you dont hide your emotins ant your and its out for everyone to see. and "wear it like a bruise or black eye" is like even though you may not want people to see whats up or how your really feeling u cant hide it. so ppl can read rite thru.

General Comment:"My heart is on my sleeve, wear it like a bruise or black eye" has to do with cutting, cause when you cut you cover it up like its a bruise,

"my badge my witness" means that the bruises are proof of something
