"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
A hundred days have made me older
Since the last time that I've saw your pretty face
A thousand lies have made me colder
And I don't think I can look at this the same
But all the miles that separate
They disappear now when I'm dreamin' of your face
I'm here without you baby
But you're still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby and I dream about you all the time
I'm here without you baby
But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight it's only you and me, yeah
The miles just keep rollin'
As the people leave their way to say hello
I've heard this life is overrated
But I hope that it gets better as we go, oh-oh yeah yeah
I'm here without you baby
But you're still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby and I dream about you all the time
I'm here without you baby
But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight girl, it's only you and me
Everything I know (yeah), and anywhere I go (yeah)
It gets hard but it won't take away my love (yeah)
And when the last one falls (oh-oh) when it's all said and done
It gets hard but it won't take away my love, whoa, oh-oh
I'm here without you baby
But you're still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby and I dream about you all the time
I'm here without you baby
But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight girl, it's only you and me, yeah, oh yeah

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
I think its about that person who (well I'd like to think of it this way) you broke up with either recently or a long time ago. And you later find out or realize that, that person means the whole world to you. Only this time its too dang late. Shes gone and shes so far away and all you can ever do is dream about her, and live for that moment that you will be together in your dreams. Its a sad song, a song of regrets maybe, but generally i think its a sad song.
It's about being completely in love and sure of your feelings for that person and even though there are many miles that serperate us right now, we're with eachother in our dreams. And you make me can't wait to see and hold you. You're the one I need, want and love... nothing will ever take away my love for you!
This has been one of my favorite songs for a long time. A few years ago (I was a senior in high school at the time) I had to put my dog to sleep after having her my whole life. I grew up with her and she was always there for me every single day, waiting to show me how much she loved me (I know this sounds stupid, but I love dogs haha). Anyway, in the car ride back from putting her to sleep, I heard this song...and although it's supposed to be about a significant other, the whole "Here Without You" part really hit home.
A couple months later, I met a girl who managed to make me feel like no other girl ever could. When we were first getting to know each other, she got a hold of my phone and saw my background (my dog) and the words "Here Without You". She thought it was about a past girlfriend that I couldn't get over, and it almost cost me a chance at being with her. But in the end, we connected over my dog, and we ended up dating for over a year (most of which was long distance) before she ended things. The ironic part of the story is that SHE became the ex-girlfriend that I couldn't get over for a while.
I know it's a pretty lame story, but I'm a pretty lame guy haha. Although it was really interesting when I heard this song on the radio just a few months after my dog passed away. I had not heard it on the radio since the day she died, but when I counted the days since she had passed...it was exactly "100 days since I saw her face". It was such a crazy coincidence (and I did NOT make it up).
But anyway, I love this song because it can represent your feelings about being away from any loved one. Whether you're torn apart by a long-distance relationship, break up, or death, "it gets hard but it won't take away my love". I think that can speak to a lot of people in a lot of situations, which is why this song is one of the best ever
I listened to this several times after I broke up with my girlfriend. It's a good thing I'm still friends with her, or I would cry every time I heard this song.
I broke up with my b/f almost a year ago, and he told me after we broke up that I should listen to the song. I did, and I balled!!! I guess it helped me see things from his side. BUT it is a great, and beautiful song!!!
This song upsets me. Its really beautiful but it reminds me a friend that passed on. Maybe because we we're listening to this song on the way to funeral. I would assume that he has lost a lover/friend..
Well i Know how You feel my Ex Dedicated This Song TO me and Then He Died Like Two days After That DDD:
I think this song has become a favorite for all the families of military and other organizations that are traveling away from each other. This is my favorite song ever!
well, I think this is a great love song. It's about sb who has broken up with his boy/girlfriend, still loves him/her and misses him/her. Ilove the music and the way he sings!
Yes being the one breaking up w/ the other person, the song's sad. BEING the one broken up w/ after 3 yrs., it's devastating. Along w/ Pearl Jam's "Black"....
Once I had a great girlfriend, but we broke up for some stupid reason and now we're still good friends but now we have an impossible relation... She has now a new boyfriend for almost 2 years and I have a new girlfriend for almost a year, but every time we meet eachother and we're alone then this world just stops for a second for both of us... We don't know what to do because we both love two persons, it's realy hard to chose between two person that are both very special to you Each time I hear this song I think the two girls I love, I know that someday I will have to let one of my precious persons go... :(
