Yeah, through the screen door, your thoughts are quarantined,
Yeah, and by the way you smell, I can tell that you're fifteen.
Yeah, my name is Denver Max and I eat heart attacks.
Yeah, from your mouth to your hands to the floor, you're bubbling syntax.

'Cause what crickets see is between you and me.
Yeah, scarecrows think would turn your eyeballs pink.

Don't you try to call the cops, little girl, cops little girl,
Before you pick up the phone, you'll be dead.
Don't you try to call the cops, little girl, cops little girl,
Your tongue is withered and it's heavier than lead.
Won't you just step into the car little girl, car, little girl?
Your parents don't understand what's in your head.
We're really onto something special, little girl, special little girl,
You're blushing red, your head can't hide those thoughts of dread.

Yeah, through the screen door, a-kiss me like a queen.
Yeah, it tastes like metal in my mouth, a-rusty Listerine.
Yeah, my name is Denver Max, a-please excuse the mask,
Yeah, running down my face, a-bound by tacks and paste.

'Cause what crickets see is between you and me.
Yeah, what scarecrows think would turn your eyeballs pink, turn your eyeballs pink.
And with a face like that, you'll never ever gonna make it big.
You'll never find a boyfriend unless you get it adjusted.

Yeah, my name is Denver Max, won't you come sit on my lap?
Yeah, 'cause the only thing you own is everything you lack.

Don't you try to call the cops, little girl, cops little girl,
Before you pick up the phone, you'll be dead.
Don't you try to call the cops, little girl, cops little girl,
Your tongue is withered and it's heavier than lead.
Won't you just step into the car, little girl, car little girl,
Your parents don't understand what's in your head.
We're really onto something special, little girl, special little girl,
You're blushing red, your head can't hide those thoughts of dread,
Can't hide those thoughts of dread.

By the time we hit Tuscon,
Your parents, little girl, parents, little girl
Be wondering where their pretty little blonde has gone.
By the time we hit Mexico,
You'll know little girl, know, little girl
That Denver Max will always be the only one.
By the time we hit the ocean,
We'll jump little girl, jump, little girl
Down to find the undersea sun.

Yeah, before you pick up the phone, you'll be dead.
Yeah, before you pick up the phone, you'll be dead.
Oh, you'll be dead.

Won't you just step into the car, little girl, car little girl,
Your parents don't understand what's in your head.
We're really onto something special, little girl, special little girl,
You're blushing red, your head can't hide those thoughts of dread,
Can't hide those thoughts of dread.

General Comment:I was stoned the other day. and thinking about music. and i realized, that a voice is an instrument. take away the words coming out of mouths, and listen to the sound and notes hit by this band and other bands.
(however, combining meaningful words with beautiful sounds is what makes music perfect. i.e the blood brothers) listen to the way the singer sings. and think of it as a guitar or drum or instrument of some sort. this band has nailed beatific vocalism along with every other member of this band. they're all so talented. i love them :)

General Comment:oh and Oates portrays the murderer, Schmid, as Arnold Friend in her book. I don't really know where the whole Denver Max thing comes from. Or why he's a salesman for that matter.

General Comment:This song is based of Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been, a short story by Joyce Carol Oates. We had to read the story for school and I didn't like it but it makes many references to the devil in the story. The story itself is based on the 1966 murders of three high school aged girls in Tuscon. Hence, 'By The Time We Hit Tuscon' line. The mask part of the song alludes to the fact that the murderer often wore makeup.

General Comment:I haven't read all the responces, so this may just be restating something, but... With the short story taken into account, I think that this song is pretty clearly about how the younger generation can be easily taken advantage of to be turned into brainless puppets of the media, or corporate world by being led to believe that they are not good enough as they are, through seemingly tempting offers at first, and only later realizing what they have bound themselves to. Oh, "honesty" these days...
