Heal myself, a feather on my heart
Look inside, there never was a start
Peel myself, dispose of severed skin
All subsides, around me and within

There's nothing painful in this
There's no upheaval
Redemption for my pathos
All sins undone

Awaiting word on what's to come
In helpless prayers a hope lives on
As I've come clean I've forgotten what I promised
In the rays of the sun I am longing for the darkness

General Comment:The part of the song where the build-up is at it's peak and you think it's about to climax...and then it goes back to quiet acoustic guitar again gets me every time.

General Comment:I think something has come or is coming to an end and he's trying to come to terms with it, to accept it and get his closure but then when he says "there's nothing painful in this" I get the feeling that he's lying to himself, and finally he admits that he doesn't want this to end, he still has hope and he is feeling miserable. "As I've come clean I've forgotten what I promised" refers to how he promised himself he would close this chapter, but now he gets that he is still clinging to this something (may be a relationship, or to his own life).

General Comment:He's dying. The first verse is a bit of self-abuse and then speaking of shedding his mortal form.

His life was lived in sin, in a style that provoked others' emotions. He is redeemed in death, a penalty for his faults.

He is curious as to what will become of him, and prays for the better possibilities. He is tired of waiting for the end, however, and longs for the darkness of either death (or Hell, it's not perfectly clear).

BTW: Pathos - a style that has the power to evoke feelings.

General Comment:Crujebsul - Pathos is when something brings out your emotions, like when a sad movie makes you cry. I'm not really sure if that fits into the lyrics though.

General Comment:I was pretty new to Opeth then, crujeb.. I just felt like starting off with this as my first Opeth album because I've never heard a death band go prog rock like this.. plus I usually buy bands' heavier albums first..

General Comment:i think this song is about somthing ending before he wanted it to, without any closure.
they even give us an example at the end, where they play a BRILLIANT riff for a long time, and end it abruptly without warning.

General Comment:I'm surprised no one asked already... what on earth is "pathos"? o.O
And Lateralus, what are you talking about? Clean vocals are a major part of Opeth. If you like Opeth, you gotta like both clean and death vocals.

General Comment:I know Opeth is known for their death metal sound but I felt like experimenting and buying this album. It's pretty cool, eventhough Akerfeldt's clean vox take a little bit of time to get used to. Anyway, I agree with meerkat

General Comment:in the last part, where he has time to think again, he realizes in the process of cleaning himself, he's also gotten rid of what was what he thought was important --it prolly was something negative.
and now he misses what he was.

for some reason, i think of a guy, walking alone, in open space, like a desert.
