Lyrics for Everybody's Fool as interpreted by rjbucs28

Everybody's Fool Lyrics
Perfect by nature
Icons of self indulgence
Just what we all need
More lies about a world that

Never was and never will be
Have you no shame? Don't you see me?
You know you've got everybody fooled

Look, here she comes now
Bow down and stare in wonder
Oh, how we love you
No flaws when you're pretending
But now I know she

Never was and never will be
You don't know how you've betrayed me
And somehow you've got everybody fooled

Without the mask, where will you hide?
Can't find yourself lost in your lie

I know the truth now
I know who you are
And I don't love you anymore

Never was and never will be
You don't know how you've betrayed me
And somehow you've got everybody fooled

It never was and never will be
You're not real and you can't save me
And somehow now you're everybody's fool

it's about how someone is living a lie. and they pretend to be "perfect",yet someone knows who they really are. and is telling them that they aren't fooling anybody but themselves. and britney spears is an example.

Evanescence is just a mainstream band although not a bad band I wouldn’t put them as Gothic, all you people with Goth in your name or whatever, please get a clue. Lacuna Coil which has popped up a few times in this thread is an example of a good gothic metal band, their singer is a opera singer. My favourites are 'Heavens a Lie' and 'Swamped'.

Evanescence is popular because it fills the ultra mainstream void of darker angsty rock music with a female vocalist.

Amy Lee is alright singer but she is not opera quality, her voice hardly enchants me. The major problem for me though is that the rest of her band play some very bland rock music and at times do a truly horrible attempt at metal that makes even nu-metal rock. :(

For the record artists I like that are 'similar' to Evanescence and I use that very loosely are In Winter, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, and Within Temptation, all of which incorporate female vocalists and dark lyrical themes, but these bands are considered to be symphonic metal/gothic metal rather than rock.

I would recommend listening to a few songs by Nightwish especially Nightwish - Nemo
the (opera) singer does a beautiful job.

Evanescence needs to stop thinking about selling records and concentrate more on gaining respect or wind up like so many mainstream bands and becoming has-beens.

this song talks clearly about all these people who get affected by what they see in ads, and of course, it talks about pop stars who sell an image they can't support. amy's totally right. the song is great and the videoclip a real diamond

*DISCLAIMER*
I didn't take the time to read every page of comments, so this may have already been said.
*DISCLAIMER*

I see this song as a critique of not only popular culture, but also, on a deeper level, of religion. The first line, "Perfect by nature", ie. God, is complemented by the chorus (and the lead in) of "more lies about a world; that never was, and never will be". This refers to an afterlife that is promised to subscribers of, in this case, Christianity. The next verse lightly disguises the Christian Savior, Jesus Christ, by referring to the person as female: "Look here she comes now; Bow down and stare in wonder; Oh how we love you; No flaws when you're pretending; But now I know she; Never was and never will be". This shows the singer's contempt for religion, and of creating, what is to her, an idol used to control her and the masses ("You've got everybody fooled"; "How you've betrayed me"). Finally, the song ends by saying "You're not real and you can't save me", an obvious allusion to Jesus as her former "Lord and SAVIOR" who she now realizes is not real. This is how he's become "Everybody's Fool".

i haven't read all the posts here , but most people get this song wrong. i got the song wrong at first too until i saw the videoclip

let me tell you a little secret: the I-person and the You-person are bothe the same person. this song is about someone talking to herself. the I is how she really is , the You is her "mask" how she is towards other people.

remember the clip? lies lies lies lies, you see someone who is famous and been regarded as een beautifull and succesfull person, but when she is alone you see how she really is, a depressed girl full of fear and sorrow. the mask is a way to hide her real self. but it actually doesnt help her at all because she still feels terrible inside. and no-one knows how she really feels because she pretends to be great. and thats why she's everybody's fool.

i'm actually a !00% percent sure that that's what this song is about

this song is very open and blatantly honest. it's saying that these people may look happy and beautiful, but they are only fake, empty, and fragile and in the end, they'll be last in line.

I agree that she is talking about someone who is perfect on the outside and all that, but at the same time- the music video makes fun of pop idols, how flashy and fake they are, maybe it is also partially that.

Also, in depression, many people hide under this mask of happy perfct people. Maybe that is hinted there, too.

Great Video For This One, Amy's voice sounds beautiful ( as always ) , and its a situation i see so often, people who seem so perfect but on the inside its a totally different story, the real person normally comes out in the end :)

While I agree with most of your comments, I think on a deeper level this song could be interpreted as being about whoever is singing it - telling yourself that this is who you are and what you've become.

OMG has anyone ever noticed that the theme of being hurt by someone who everyone else loves is in almost every single goddamn movie, book, game and song ever invented?!?!?!?!?!?
It's like, like Amy Lee KNEW that.

On a slightly less sarcastic note, I agree with vulc5n. From memory, wasn't the music video based around that theme? *makes a note to watch it.. eventually*

Amy Lee is talking about her own self betraying her because she is not what everybody thinks she is. Off camera she has just as many problems as everyone else and everyone thinks shes perfect so shes "everybody's fool" She could also be having a conversation with god about it in some lines
judge for yourself kids!

I think this about about a person who is 'perfect' and everyone thinks this person is so wonderful and nice and charming and whatever. But really, this person is mean and disgusting and is lying.

Or it oculd be relating to celebs. Everyone thinks they're gorgeous. Most pictures are photo-edited so they look better, and the celebrities are on so many insane diets and training programs. Some have surgery to look better.

Anyways, I like this song. Evanescence is good.

A character I made in a game me n some friends did outside in our backyards said a phrase once, and I ironically think of that phrase when I hear this song. "We all have our secrets, our darker sides of life. We all have our evils, our parasites. Sometimes, rumors that our darkness have reached the surface. Please, leave those rumors as that. Rumors. They can be more poisonous than the deed itself."
However, the person she's relating to maybe held their evils in far too long, and were beginning to believe they had none? That's the kinda the feel I get from this. Finding the evils of someone, and wanting to release it. Rumors. My 2 cents, but hey.

It's NOT about herself. Just because she's the one in the video dosn't mean she's talking about herself.
I saw an interview and she said it's about Britney spears, and those "fake" pop idols.
Her younger sister, before she died, was into britney.

well, if you've seen the video (on MTV and other music channels, but also on the Anywhere But Home DVD) you'll know it's basically about she's the Poster Girl for a company called Lie, which basically tells people they aren't good enough unless they buy this or this or this from Lie (You're Nothing Without A Good Lie, There's Nothing Better Than A Good Lie). And she HATED being this person, "I know the truth now, I know who you are, and I don't love you anymore." But, as you'll see in my next post, I found a different meaning before I watched the video.

My original meaning was something like a scene from that movie, The Princess Bride, the scene where she's dreaming that she's walking down an aisle and Prince Humperdinck has just announced she will be his bride. Then there's that old woman who yelling "boo! boo! Go on, bow down to her! Go on!" and just generally being nasty and telling people how fake she is. I visualised this as something like that.

Amy is walking along and some people start whispering behind her back about how cool she is, and then one person who isn't blinded steps up and starts dissing her, telling her how fake she is ("Look, here she comes now, bow down and stare in wonder. Oh, how we love you! No flaws when you're pretending. But now I know she never was and never will be, etc."), and it turns out this person is in authority. Amy continues doing what she does, and people begin to realise how blind they were and start doing what that person did, and begin to vandalise her property and steal her stuff, making her miserable, and order her to be crucified. The person who spoke out against her was a past love, and as she is hanging on the cross, dying, people begin sneering at her, "Without the mask, where will you hide? Can't find yourself lost in your lie!" she says, "I know the truth now, I know who you are, and I don't love you anymore, it never was and never will be, you don't know how you've betrayed me and somehow you've got everybody fooled, it never was and never will be, you're not real and you can't save me, and somehow now you're everybody's fool." meaning, 'I know the truth now. I know what you really are, who you really are, you're as fake as I am. I don't love you anymore, you're dead to me. Our love never was and never will be, you don't know how you've betrayed me by revealing my secret! Siomehow, now, you've got everybody fooled, they think you're so good for putting me to death, but you're not, you're a bad person and they don't know that. That "good" personality never was and never will be, you're not real, and you can't save me' just a break here, someone who still believes in her tries to save her, but she thinks she's hallucinating, so she says, "You're not real and you can't save me" 'And somehow now you're everbody's fool, everybody knows what a henious crime you have commited and they don't love you either.' Although, she may not have been crucified, now that I read over this comment, I get the feeling that maybe she was burned, Joan Of Arc style.

What does everyone else think about this? Too Medieval?
