Will someone please call a surgeon
Who can crack my ribs
And repair this broken heart
That you're deserting for better company?
I can't accept that it's over
I will block the door
Like a goalie tending the net
In the third quarter of a tied-game of rivalry
So just say how to make it right
And I swear I'll do my best to comply
Tell me am I right to think
That there could be nothing better
Than making you my bride
And slowly growing old together?
I feel I must interject here
You're getting carried away
Feeling sorry for youself
With these revisions and gaps in history
So let me help you remember
I've made charts and graphs
That should finally make it clear
I've prepared a lecture on why I have to leave
So please back away and let me go
I can't, my darling, I love you so
Tell me am I right to think
That there could be nothing better
Than making you my bride
And slowly growing old together
Don't you feed me lines
About some idealistic future
Your heart won't heal right
If you keep tearing out the sutures
I admit that I have made mistakes
And I swear I'll never wrong you again
You've got allure, I can't deny
But you've had your chance so say goodbye
Say goodbye
Who can crack my ribs
And repair this broken heart
That you're deserting for better company?
I can't accept that it's over
I will block the door
Like a goalie tending the net
In the third quarter of a tied-game of rivalry
So just say how to make it right
And I swear I'll do my best to comply
Tell me am I right to think
That there could be nothing better
Than making you my bride
And slowly growing old together?

it was bugging me that almost in everyone's interpretation they kept making her seem cold-hearted but it is not so! she doesn't want to leave to just leave, she is leaving for REASONS and it is so frustrating to her that he keeps guilt tripping her about the break up. They were both hurting in the relationship and she took initiative to end it because she knew he wouldn't do it! She wants to do the right thing for both of them. He simply refuses to see the problems they had and it's really frustrating to her emotionally/psychologically because sometimes he does bring doubt to her with all those "idealistic lines" he throws at her. He is fucking with her emotions/head on her intentions about wanting to break up! I say this from experience haha... and I went through EXACTLY what this song is about. The guy did/says everything that my ex would say to me when I tried to leave and it would really get to me emotionally/psychologically. Being blamed about a break up is not cool and him denying our problems in a way was like telling me it's all in my head and that I'm literally crazy for thinking we had issues. Ya'll don't even understand our point of view.... if anything the girl in this song KICKS ASS for being the bigger person and saving two lives and two hearts from getting into a deeper turmoil!
