Last week I had the strangest dream
where everything was exactly how it seemed
where there was never any mystery
of who shot John F Kennedy
It was just a man with something to prove,
slightly bored and severely confused
He steadied his rifle with his target in the center
and became famous on that day in November
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Again last night I had that strange dream
where everything was exactly how it seemed
concerns about the world getting warmer
people thought that they were just being rewarded
for treating others as they'd like to be treated
for obeying stop signs and curing diseases
for mailing letters with the address of the sender
Now we can swim any day in November
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in (Now we can swim any day in November)
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping
where everything was exactly how it seemed
where there was never any mystery
of who shot John F Kennedy
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping

most people are content to believe, and fully accept, that JFK was murdered by a crazed lone gunman. they don't try to LOOK below the surface and see who was really involved. same with global warming. hmmm, maybe summers are getting warmer because we're being rewarded! again, people don't want to search for TRUTH.
this 'dream' is foreign to the songwriter because he's an out-of-the-box thinker and knows there more to the story, more than what it seems on the surface! however, he finds it strangely comforting to live in this world and doesn't want to woken up...kinda like a majority of the population living in their fantasy world.
So my interpretation is that the world is so complicated, and nothing is how it seems, which is why he wants to stay in this dream world where things are simple.
I know the song because Simon and Garfunkel covered it, among many others.
lyrics:
Last night I had the strangest dream
I ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war
I dreamed I saw a mighty room
The room was filled with men
And the paper they were signing said
They'd never fight again
And when the papers all were signed
And a million copies made
They all joined hands end bowed their heeds
And grateful prayers were prayed
And the people in the streets below
Were dancing round and round
And guns and swords and uniforms
Were scattered on the ground
Last night I had the strangest dream
I ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war
if you do not know about the NWO (new world order) or any of their cynical plans then you are said to be "asleep" why i think this song is about this is because the first verse talks about JFK's assassination.
"last week i had the strangest dream, where everything was exactly how it seemed, there was never any mystery of who shot John F. Kennedy.." his 'dream' to me would be most peoples reality...they see the world how it seems not how it actually is. If you know anything about the darker side of JFK's murder then you would have probably came across the he was killed for an entirely bigger reason and Lee Harvey Oswald was just a fall guy that was set up to feed the public lies..
"dont wake me, i plan on sleeping in.." this leads me to believe that he knows the truth but life is so much better asleep that he's just going to stay asleep.. just like in the movie the matrix. Living inside the matrix is infinently better than the world outside of it..
i didn't read most any of the comments so somebody may have already said something like this, if not...here's another view to see it from.
This world, albeit ignorant, is happy and stress-free. In my opinion, it's gibbard's interpretation of life if it was perfect in a 'strange' way. That's why he chooses to sleep in, free from the worries the world puts on us. As they say, ignorance is bliss.
Maybe we shouldn't argue and discuss so much about things that can't truly be proven anyway.
No one knows who that sniper shot Kennedy was and why he did it, no one has ever figured it out or proven it, we only have wild guesses. It's really just a thing we should let be history and don't worry about any more.
The global warming bit sounds like it's about that sometimes the most simple reasons for anything you usually get at first glance is maybe the easiest too. The world getting warmer sounds like a reward when you first here it, a little more warm weather wouldn't hurt. It's just how it seems, we're getting rewarded for being nice.
The world is exactly what it looks like, there's no need to think about "why", the world is just what you think it is and things happens and happened all according to what makes most sense to you.
Of course people thinks differently, that's why it's called sleeping in, because it's a dream. A dream is something you're in control of, and things happens because you thought it happens that way.
