Lyrics for Sleeping In as interpreted by rjbucs28

Sleeping In Lyrics
Last week I had the strangest dream
That everything was exactly how it seemed
Where there was never any mystery
Of who shot John F. Kennedy
It was just a man with something to prove
Slightly bored and severely confused
He steadied his rifle with his target in the center
And became famous on that day in November

Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in . . .

Again last night I had that strange dream
Where everything was exactly how it seemed
No concerns about the world getting warmer
People thought that they were just being rewarded
For treating others as they'd like to be treated
For obeying stop signs and curing diseases
For mailing letters with the address of the sender
Now we can swim any day in November

Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in . . .

To me this song is about the writer (Ben) having dreams about how things in the world should be. To me he's dreaming about humans being perfect, humans being naive to bad personality flaws, to the wrong doings of other humans, ect. And he wants to sleep in so he can continue dreaming about these things because he knows it'll never actually be like that in reality.

I don't know, my first impression was that "no concerns about the world getting warmer / people thought that they were just being
rewarded" meant that people are not taking the earth-threatening problem of global-warming seriously. The way the singer says "now we can swim any day in november" sounds so sarcastic. For these reasons, I think "sleeping in" refers to ignoring the real problems in the world. Those who "sleep in" believe everything as it seems, without looking deeper. Obviously, the ultimate destruction of the earth (reality) outweighs the ability to swim in November (the way it seems)... hence the sarcasm.

i don't think it matters if they're on mtv or mtv2. it's good music no matter who likes it. i'd much rather see postal service on mtv than some other band that isn't so good.

I've just been on a Postal Service download fest and this song is AMAZING. I caught them on MTV2 (That hardcore late night session on saturdays where they play all the "wierd stuff") a while back (bout November time or something), thought they were brilliant - and only just remembered them.

To be honest I want these guys to become big. I couldn't care, they deserve it. Their writing skills and their quirky use of odd sounds (in this song, especially) along with the creepily eerie tone of the singer's voice far surpasses the other shit that's clogging up th "music industry" at the mo.

It's about time the really good bands like these guys, Cursive, Jets To Brazil and Sleep Station got the recognition they deserve and show other, weaker bands how it's done.

this is definitely my favorite Postal Service song. It makes you think "If the world really was perfect... how would it be?"

This song is pretty nasty. I like the part about John F. Kenedy

-If you want a taste for how the world would be if it were perfect read the book "The Giver".

I love this song. It stabs modern society in America in how they make huge deals out of everything, which causes more problems. Watch Bowling for Columbine to get that statement.

Everyone wants a perfect world, but we all know it will never happen anywhere but in our dreams. Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in.

the bit about global warming i think is so clever. i think that bit is about the population being ignorant to what is going, or at least what it all means. "no concerns about the world getting warmer
people thought that they were just being
rewarded " is people know the world is heating up etc, but don't really understand what consequences it has for the earth. they think its a good thing, like a reward for silly things they have done like "mailing letters with the address of the
sender " etc. and now they can "swim anyday in november" you see? that's what i think it means. people are aware, but don't understand.

I took "Mailing letters with the adress of the sender" as a way of saying taking responsibility for what you do and say.

"Obeying stop signs and curing diseases" as doing the little things and the big things will follow.

I do agree that the reference to global warming is undoubtedly a sarcastic stab at society.

I think some of you guys care too much about what other people think... true it's not cool to trash a song that other people are passionate about. I like this song a lot as well and it's cool to hear others opinions... but whatever floats your boat.

I first heard this song the night before Election Day and my thoughts turned to political commentary. It kinda seems to me like the guy is totally despairing about American politics and political issues and he's going to take a stand by not voting for anyone in November. But since the song came out way before then... who knows.

i love this song. its one of there best.has anyone heard about the guys getting sued for the name " postal service". there getting sued by the actual postal service. it has something to do with copy rights. every fan of the postal service should know how the talented musicians got there name. for those who dont they sent music back and forth throught the mail as gives the name postal service.

ok To that NIKKI chick your fucking reatarded how many bands do you know make an entire cd over the internet without even meating...DAMN i think blink 182 did that last week...yeah ok ne ways about the song i'm not always sure what to think about it but if its not sarcasim then its deffenitly satire which is just basically a nice way of being sarcastice without getting in trouble... i do love this song because even though i have been a postal service fan for a couple years i just discoverd this song when it came on to one of my playlist and i liked it cuz it kinda just makes you smile to think that if this song wasnt sarcastic or what not and it was true the world would be such a better place...and pluse who doesnt love sleeping in!...ne ways oh yeah about the mtv2 thing i understand that it sucks when the "teeny boppers" dont appricate the song for what it is..but hey those guy spend money on our good bands which gives them money to do nothing but keep making more music...that is as long as they dont sell out....but i think we can count on postal service even though death cab has its teeny bopper sell out moments...but still remain great!

I really think this song is about how the world is actually a great place, people just don't want to show it. I mean if that guy never shot JFK then USA might be a better place to live in. How people either shouldn't contribute for global warming or say, "Aw, who cares? Le's go for a swim!" And it's November! What i'm saying is that, the world seems nice...it is inside, but outside is the hatred...let your emotion free!

George
