The air was more than human
And the heat was more than hungry
And the cars were square and spitting
diesel fumes
The ? were running wild
because they're big and mean and sacred
and the children playing cricket with no shoes
The morning we woke up man
To a seven-hour drive
Well there we were in South Batong
Where Women are men and men go wrong
And there were so many fewer questions
When stars were still just the holes to
heaven, mmm
Man and there were so many fewer questions
When stars were still just the holes to
heaven, mmm
Disembarking from the port
with no mistakes of any so
Moving southly engine running smooth
Officials were quite friendly
once we drown them w/ our sweet talk
and we bribed them w/ our cigerettes and booze
The next morning we woke up man w/ the sunrise to right well
moving back north to port blair??
where boats break and children stare
And there were so many fewer questions
When stars were still just the holes to
heaven, mmm
and there were so many fewer questions
When stars were still just the holes to
heaven, mmm
And the heat was more than hungry
And the cars were square and spitting
diesel fumes
The ? were running wild

In medieval times it was believed, that the sky was a firm semi-sphere spanning over the earth, which was believed to be a flat plane. Behind the sky there was heaven, the place where God and the Saints were thought to be. To my knowledge this semi-sphere was also believed to have holes for the rain to fall through. The stars, apart from the fixed stars, which are the stars making up the zodiac signs, were thought to be the heavenly light shining through these holes.
By referring to this medieval world view, it is referred to a time (that is the medieval era ca. 500-1500 A. D.) before the copernican world view (heliocentrism: the earth circles around the sun) was published in 1543 and was being more and accepted in the following centuries, and the enlightenment era later on in the 18th century, where the human reason was discovered as a means to understand the world in contrast to the religious belief, that is, a time, when not everything was questioned ("so many fewer questions"), but the Bible and the Church were those deciding on what the Truth is and things unknown were left to the knowledge of God as the Omniscient.
I read some comments that are very close to what I just read, and also give good hints to what the verses of the song refer to. I would rather think too, that they report personal experiences of the songwriter, Jack Johnson, when he was travelling, which made him think and raised questions in him.
i feel like its just about the bliss of innocence, with the india thing kinda of as a background story
When he says there were so many fewer questions he means that noone really cared what was up there when noone knew what was up there. Hes signing about generations ago and how his experience in that counrty bought him closer to those times.
That could be interpreted as wishing you were young again, but i think it has a wider meaning than that.
Anyways, this song to me is about how life used to be so simpler when people didnt question many things in life ... maybe a little indication of religeon as believing in god and just being good is so much easier than questioning the reasons for life and justifying the evil in the world; "And the cars were square and spitting diesel fumes" (Global Warming), "and the children playing cricket with no shoes" (poverty) ... I don't think the song is completly about that though ... it's obviously about his surfing trip ... but i think his time surfing 'caused him to think about life and write this song. Just my personal view on this :)
