In waves the ships have all sailed to the sea
Well do you want to wait or leave with me tonight
Cross your heart and pray
The ocean will take us all the way in
First we are ever to fall off of the earth
We must be the
First ones in the world to fall off of the earth
We could be, soon as our needs are fed
You'll give in to me and the whole heartache
Makes me feel alive, same typical offering
And you always knew we make it all the way in
First we are ever to fall off of the earth
We must be the
First ones in the world to fall off of the earth
It could be soon, as
The carnivals empty, I need you to take me home
God help! [Repeat x10]

Truly powerful, really gives me a sense of having some courage to have some faith, even a little blind faith, which can be useful at one level in order to take a leap into the unknown while trusting in God, fate, destiny, or whatever you believe, or to leave behind the old and make way for the new so to speak, like at the beginning (pray the ocean will take us all the way in), which I feel this song does make reference to the mass exodous of Europeans into the Americas because they were fleeing the centuries of tyranny and oppression by rulers and the church, and sought freedom (in the face of falling off of the earth), but the ending really gave me a sense of faith as in finding oneself in a pickle so much to the point where one would cry out GOD HELP ME GOD HELP ME GOD!!!!!!!! over and over again, truly powerful invocation.
Chino truly has an amazing power to his voice, and a gifted mind to cryptically capture a multii-perspectual, multi-layered piece of art in the form of words and sound. Deftones 4 Life.
it gives me chills every time i listen to it.
pure genius.
In waves the ships have all sailed to the sea
Well do you wanna wait or leave with me tonight
Cross your heart and pray the ocean will take us all the way in...
The line 'in waves ships have all sailed' refers the numerous amount of boats setting off from countries such as Cuba filled with immigrants to the US.
The seconds line could refer to the choice an immigrants family has to take- to leave with their loved one to strange shores or stay in poverty in their country.
The final line could refer to the dingies (inflatable boats) which Cuban immigrants use to cross into the US, they have no clear direction and only hope thatthe ocean will lead them to land.
First we are, ever to fall off of the earth...
We must be the first ones in the world to fall of the earth
The chorus could be a reference to how out of place the immigrants must feel when they first arrive on a different country. They must feel like they have literally fallen off the earth into a completely different, alien place.
We could be... soon as our needs are fed
You'll give in to me and the whole heartache
Makes me feel alive/same typical offering/
And you always knew we make it all the way in...
The first line could be talking about happiness, and how they could be happy as soon as they sort their lives out in the new country- get a job, find aplace to live, get some money (fulfilling their needs).
Not quite sure about the next two lines, although it could be about the immigrant persuading their family to leave with them to a new country. While the final line is about the immigrants finally making it accros the sea and arriving at their new home- just like they knew they would.
It could be soon...as...
The carnival's empty I need you to take me home...
god help, god help ...
However, the line 'It could be soon...as...' shows that they keep hoping that they will land on their feet and will settle down but nothing happens, they have no job, no money but they keep hoping that 'soon' something will come along.
'The carnival's empty I need you to take me home...' shows how this new land their in has nothing to offer to
them, they feel it is 'empty' and just want to return home.
And finally, 'God help me' shows that they have nothing left except their faith and need God to steer them home.
I feel that this song is a symbol of early European voyage across the Atlantic to the Americas. It was the first thing I thought of when I heard the song.
To prove it, I will pick apart the lyrics:
In waves the ships have all sailed to the sea [New ships come into port ready for sailing]
Well do you wanna wait or leave with me tonight [No one would go, cuz they all thought the voyagers were crazy]
Cross your heart and pray the ocean will take us all the way in... [Pray to God we don't die in this voyage]
First we are, ever to fall off of the earth...
We must be the first ones in the world to fall of the earth
[All the crew were scared that they would fall off the Earth]
We could be... soon as our needs are fed [Once they got thier, they hungered resources]
You'll give in to me and the whole heartache [They figured the natives were dumb enough to do it]
Makes me feel alive/same typical offering/ [The natives thought they were gods]
And you always knew we make it all the way in... [You knew they would think that way, they are primative]
First we are, ever to fall off of the earth...
We must be the first ones in the world to fall of the earth
It could be soon...as...
The carnival's empty I need you to take me home...
god help, god help ...
[After the natives found they were being raped, they revolted and killed the settelers]
Also, the title, "Bloody Cape" has 2 meanings, 1 beings a body of water filled with bloodshed, like the coast of America after European invasion, or, anopther meaning would be a red cloak used during a bullfight, popular in countries such as Spain and France, 2 countries known for thier imperialism over the Americas.
I know, the song is probably about something totally different like sex or drugs, but I'd like to think it goes deeper than that. I hope we meet eye to eye on this one.

It's history, man. He's not singing "God help me" he's singing "God help Octavian"
Bloody Cape is a reference to Caesar's assassination
Octavianus had to go before a hostile senate who were celebrating Caesar's death. His only real ally turned out to be withholding all of Caesar's money, which was promised to the people... So, aged 20, he had to fight this fuckin war hero... AND Cleopatra...
"God help Octavian".
