Lyrics for St. Anger as interpreted by ruben

St. Anger Lyrics
Saint Anger 'round my neck
Saint Anger 'round my neck
He never gets respect
Saint Anger 'round my neck

(You flush it out, You flush it out)
Saint Anger 'round my neck
(You flush it out, You flush it out)
He never gets respect
(You flush it out, You flush it out)
Saint Anger 'round my neck
(You flush it out, You flush it out)
He never gets respect

Fuck it all and no regrets
I hit the lights on these dark sets
I need a voice to let myself
To let myself go free
Fuck it all and fuckin' no regrets
I hit the lights on these dark sets
Medallion noose, I hang myself
Saint Anger 'round my neck

I feel my world shake
Like an earth quake
It's hard to see clear
Is it me? Is it fear?
I'm madly in anger with you
I'm madly in anger with you
I'm madly in anger with you
I'm madly in anger with you

(repeat all)

I want my anger to be healthy
I want my anger just for me
I need my anger not to control
I want my anger to be me
I need to set my anger free
I need to set my anger free
I need to set my anger free
I need to set my anger free

Fuck it all and no regrets
I hit the lights on these dark sets
Tie a noose or hang myself
Saint Anger 'round my neck

I feel my world shake
Like an earth quake
It's hard to see clear
Is it me? Is it fear?
I'm madly in anger with you
I'm madly in anger with you
I'm madly in anger with you
I'm madly in anger with you
I'm madly in anger with you
I'm madly in anger with you
I'm madly in anger with you
I'm madly in anger with you

this is an OK song, though not metallicas best, ever since the black album metallica has lost their touch.

they have started slowly edging towards nu metal and are losing their thrashiness.

the lack of solos and intro riffs makes me sick, thats the best part about metallica.

also hetfields voice is goin down the drain

Did Kirk Hammett even show up to the studio for this album?

I could have just as easily been on the axe for this. Doesn't matter since all you hear is the drums and James Hetfield.

I'd say download this....but Lars will come after you and smash his snare drum over your head.

Oh....and remember when Metallica could write heavy lyrics without going Fred Durst on us and saying "fuck" four or five times in a verse? I also remember when the Rubik's Cube was new and fun...

I personally feel that the lyrics to this song are awe-inspiring. The problem with them is that they're presented in such a way that they seem to be pretty dumb. This song is about James' alcohol problem. The "anger" written about in this song is mostly anger against society, conformity etc, except a tiny little part at the end.

Here's a complete meaning-

"Saint Anger 'round my neck"
- A saint is someone who comes to heal the world. So Saint Anger is probably someone/something that heals anger. Considering James' rehab ordeal, I guess Saint Anger is alcohol. Ironically, this very healer is now killing him (round my neck).

"He never gets respect"
- Nobody ever sees why James resorts to alcohol. They just dismiss it as bad.

"(You flush it out, You flush it out)"
- James is trying to leave alcohol.

"Fuck it all and no regrets
I hit the lights on these dark sets"
- I'm not too sure about these two lines (yes, they are direct references to Damage Inc and Hit the Lights). This stanza probably means that Hetfield intends on leaving his past of binge-drinking behind, and move into a new bright phase of his
life.

"I need a voice to let myself
To let myself go free"
- He resorted to alcohol to set his anger to rest. The first line would've made more sense had it been "needed" instead of "need".

"Medallion noose, I hang myself"
- Superb phrase (medallion noose). It means that he gifts himself alcohol to get over his anger.

"I feel my world shake
Like an earth quake
It's hard to see clear
Is it me? Is it fear?"
- He has started to understand the consequences of his addiction. His life turns violent and it becomes hard for him to tackle its challenges. He is afraid of alcohol now.

"I'm madly in anger with you"
- James HATES alcohol. But, here, this line is sculpted to look like "I'm madly in love with you" because even though he hates this adddiction of his, he can't seem to leave it.

"I want my anger to be healthy
I want my anger just for me
I need my anger not to control
I want my anger to be me"
- Hetfield realises what he must do. If he can tackle his anger in a better way, then alcohol will lose its charm. That is, the outlet of anger should be healthy. And it should not involve anyone else than himself, especially NOT alcohol. His anger should not control him as it has done for so long (by forcing him into drinking). If he can become anger himself, then there would be no need for alcohol.

"I need to set my anger free"
- I'm not sure what this means, but I think that the rage, which he feels in this line, is not against society, conformity etc, but at the substance (alcohol) which provided him relief from his past rage. It would be ultimate irony if he would resort to alcohol to soothe his anger against, well, alcohol. So he says that he shall release all remnants of this anger from his body, so that alcohol can never infect him again.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this song, but I refuse to believe that someone who wrote "One" would write, or let others write a dumb song. St. Anger (the song) has some really thoughtful lyrics, if you try and look deep into it. Now, if only ProTools was never invented...

Great song, I liked the whole album, it's much better than for example load or reload. It seems that many metallica "fans" say that this is crap, but true fans don't change their opinion that easily. This song/album has rage, and it rocks! And James sings much better than in Metallica's early albums. Metallica changes their style and i like it, why should they do same music forever?

Terrible prodution. Bob Rock probably influenced the way this album bombed more than Metallica did. He said that he has been getting further and further away from his "craft".
Well, if he thinks that less is more, in this case he is wrong. This song sounds like shit. Most of the album sounds like shit too. The band can have there shit sandwich and eat it too.

Blackened, a true thrash metal band doens't change this easily. They should do the same music cause it kicks ass. The Black Album was their last decent work, even though it marked the beginning of the end.

Agreenmachine and others who hate the way metallica have gone under bob rock will be happy to hear that he won't produce their next album. that album will be produced by Rick Rubin...who has produced albums from slayer, soad, slipknot, RHCP...sounds like another change in their style

the drums sound so tinny, its pure tripe. how can metallica drop from the great heights of Master of puppets to this shite?! MTV driven commercial crap, why are they still singing about destruction and chaos? come on guys fuckin evolve eh! i really used to love Metallica until the Black album came along with MTV on board and ruined everything.

They only made this album to see if they could make raw-er rougher stuff after getting bad press and feedback from re-load

apparently they have listened to the feedback and are 'going back to their roots' for the new album, due out next year

Or so Ive heard

I have to say, metallica really has sold out. A few of the songs on this album are ok and worth listening to, but honestly i do regret buying this album. very dissapointing. I miss the good old days, where you could always look forward to a kick arse solo in each song. This album is full of rad riffs but hardly a solo anywhere and the drumming, it sucks. way too loud and the snare just pisses me off. When Cliff died, so did Metallica. Just my opinion.

Anyone who has ever seen SKOM knows that the song isn't about anything particular. When speaking to the prisoners, James only says that "Anger is an emotion I struggled with for pretty much all my life." It's some sort of a tribute to all the anger in the band's life, that's all.

This song (and the entire album) sucks so much. It's so sad that Metallica has went down the tubes. I agree that age has caught up to them but damn. This is horrible. I am a HUGE fan of old Metallica back when Cliff was in but let's face it, Megadeth is so much better. They actually keep producing great albums. Not travesties like this.

I think if people didnt have such a dead set image of the 80's metallica they would realize this is an excellent song.
