St. Anger Lyrics
Saint Anger 'round my neck
Saint Anger 'round my neck He never gets respect Saint Anger 'round my neck (You flush it out, You flush it out) Saint Anger 'round my neck (You flush it out, You flush it out) He never gets respect (You flush it out, You flush it out) Saint Anger 'round my neck (You flush it out, You flush it out) He never gets respect Fuck it all and no regrets I hit the lights on these dark sets I need a voice to let myself To let myself go free Fuck it all and fuckin' no regrets I hit the lights on these dark sets Medallion noose, I hang myself Saint Anger 'round my neck I feel my world shake Like an earth quake It's hard to see clear Is it me? Is it fear? I'm madly in anger with you I'm madly in anger with you I'm madly in anger with you I'm madly in anger with you (repeat all) I want my anger to be healthy I want my anger just for me I need my anger not to control I want my anger to be me I need to set my anger free I need to set my anger free I need to set my anger free I need to set my anger free Fuck it all and no regrets I hit the lights on these dark sets Tie a noose or hang myself Saint Anger 'round my neck I feel my world shake Like an earth quake It's hard to see clear Is it me? Is it fear? I'm madly in anger with you I'm madly in anger with you I'm madly in anger with you I'm madly in anger with you I'm madly in anger with you I'm madly in anger with you I'm madly in anger with you I'm madly in anger with you

The line "I'm madly in anger with you" is just a clever way of saying the complete opposite of "I'm madly in love with you."
Sounds aquard but its just a better way of saying the overly used cliche of "I hate you".
On a side note:
Overall, this cd is OK. Just okay. I think Lars must have produced this cd cuz his drums just drownd out everything. I hate that steal-sounding snare and it just covers everything up.
I agree the album is heavier than previous album efforts but if metallica is going to have 8 minute songs, they need a classic kirk kick ass solo. Most of the time one cant even tell the guitars apart. i guess i just have to face the fact that metallica will never be as good as they were in their glory days (kill em all, ride the lightning, master of puppets, and justice for all)
after those, its all down hill but saint anger is a breath of fresh air and a sign that their heaviness is coming back. it just needed better production and more solos for the long songs. with no solos, the whole cd just sounds like one song. nothing really seperates them. plus the lyrics are more shallow than other albums. but hey, theyre almost all 40 and i guess just really have to face the hard fact that they will never be the metallica that i fell in love with.

This song is about anger, and how it is viewed negetively when its realeased, when in fact, anger is a good thing to "set free" and get off of your chest when you vent it the right way.
Another thing, the lyrics in a few places are wrong.

I think this track is directed towards Jaymz alcohol addiction, in a sense. If you read the lyrics, St. Anger being the 'bottle', and the medallion noose with medallion being the thing that is cherished and glorified (alcohol, which is, in todays society, everyone just likes to get fucked up)...it's a glorified death due to alcohol addiction if he continues down this road.
St. Anger 'round my neck
He never gets respect
This verse is about how St. Anger is overpowering his actions and he needs to drown his sorrows in said bottle because he needs the respect he lacks.
Fuck it all and no regrets
I hit the lights on these dark sets
Tie a noose or hang myself
Saint Anger 'round my neck
This is sayin that hes just diggin himself into a hole deeper, and deeper because he cant conquer the demons.
I need to set my anger free
Get rid of the addiction
I'm madly in anger with you
He's still in love with the alcohol but at the same time he hates it, wants the need to be gone
This song is identifying with the contradiction St. (meaning of holy or higher power) and Anger (meaning hate and dislike). St. Anger has the power to corrupt everyone's lives if the person becomes vulnerable enough not to stay in control. Metallica have done a good job portraying this imagery and the ability to make one use their third eye to see outside the face value of the lyrics. That is all.

I agree with you. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who interpreted this song that way. Thats what I thought it was about too, but everyone has neat ideas of what
this song means.

That aside, I would say that the song is about james' alcohol addiction, or at leats directed at it, saying how pissed off he is that he fell into that shit.

i think the meaning is pretty clear really, his anger and rage is choking him as he tries to restrain himself but wants to KILLLLLLLL! i think hetfield is having ago at all the metallica haters out there and how he's just so pissed off with them all after all these years of (often justified) abuse. the other tracks on the album have quite similar themes for the most part. i think the albums great though, its just this track, in fact its just the drums in the chorus of this track ARRRGHi agree that the drums are quite dominant in alot of songs on the album- Ulrich you twat!

Huge Step up from Reload though, as that just seemed not quite melodic (Load) and not nearly metal (rest of catalouge).
NOw onto the song:
Well according to Kirk its the exact opposite to a saint he sees in a painting on a daily basis?
It seems that someone is annoying him so, and that it is suffocating him (ST Anger round my neck).
The line "He never gets respect" seems to be that this person is never liked by anyone....let alone James who is madly in anger with him
