Lyrics for Sierra as interpreted by ruben

Sierra Lyrics
In the desert where the cities are made of gold
There's a girl playing hopscotch with pink ribbon pigtails
And her mom calls out from an apartment balcony
"Come on, baby! Your bath is ready! It's almost time for sleep!"
And I wonder who's the father
And I wonder what they call her

Sierra

Does her mother smoke
Or does she jog every morning?
Does she drink when she thinks about me
Or doesn't she need to drink?
Does she have a man who works a nine to five?
Does he come home to kiss our young Sierra
Tuck her in and say goodnight?
(And an extra kiss for mama)
I want that kiss, that kid, that apartment

I'm ready to settle down now
So get that man out of my bed
I want my daughter back now
I want to kiss her, tuck her in and say
"Goodnight, my baby girl, Sierra"

Sierra
Sierra
Sierra
Sierra

I'll never know, know who you are, and I don't deserve to

Sierra
Sierra
Sierra
Sierra

My little girl, we would've been so . . . oh, nevermind

But I'm ready to settle down now
Yeah, I'm ready to leave that wrecking ball behind
I could be your carpenter
And you could be my twinkling north star over the desert sky

This whole album, The Ugly Organ, is a masterpiece! It's so amazing! Anyways, at first I didn't understand this song, but when I like the lyrics I have to analyze the song. I'm pretty sure I get what it's about...but this whole album is full of stories, so whether it is a story or a personal experience, I can't say...I don't know the band. This song is full of imagery, he describes this perfect place where a girl and her mother live, and then he imagines this whole situation about how the mother is and does she have a man in her life and stuff...and he (the singer) is the father of the girl, Sierra. The mother and Sierra are no longer in his life and he desperately wants them back, but everything is different, and he can't have that...even though he's now realized it's the most important thing to him. Beautiful song.

He may be wishing that he could replace the new man, but at the same time he knows he never would actually be able to.... "I'll never know who you are, and i don't deserve to; My little girl, we could have been so....oh nevermind"

I have two questions: Does Tim Kasher have a daughter?
And can anyone tell me how the lyrics to this album got added? I have been trying to figure out a way to add lyrics for about a month before these magically appeared.

i just got a story out of it. there is this guy looking at this family from afar and it seems that the girl is his daughter and the mother's remarried. he must have been the cause of the seperation and now he's gone straight and wants his family back. i picture this story so beautifully. a guy standing outside of this golden sand building in a golden desert town and its a sunset and Sierra is playing outside when her mother calls her in. but another feeling i had was that it was some dimented guy staring at this family and envying & desiring it.

To Bright.Eyed.Girl,

No, Tim does not have a daughter. I believe that he has a son, but that isn't what this is about. Tim has said himself that this record isn't really about his own life, and it's just stories that he made up.

People definitely try to draw too many conclusions between Tim's life and his lyrics. He doesn't always have to be talking about himself.

PS; This is a beautiful song, as are all other Cursive songs. I literally have not heard one Cursive song that I haven't liked. And I own all of the albums. =]

I'm not sure he really is part of the family, because of the line "and I wonder what they call her - Sierra." It makes me think that he really doesn't know as much about the family, so I'm thinking its more like a One Hour Photo thing and he just wants to be a part of this family he's noticed. Or sometthing like that...I don't know.

OR he left the woman [mother] before she had a child, so he really wanted to be a father to a child with this woman.

Also...I forgot to mention I think its more likely that he doesn't know anything about the girl because of the name "Sierra." He makes references to the desert alot, so he could just give the name "Sierra" randomly because of the Sierra desert. Maybe that's just a neat pun thing for the song. I don't know.

I think that it was something more like, the man in the story was with the woman, and he found out she was pregnant and left because he didn't want to make that kind of commitment. But then as he sees the family, and another man taking his place, he wishes that he could have it back. And he wants to be her father, to leave his destructive past behind, but he knows that he was the one in the wrong and that he doesn't even deserve to be in her life.

I also think that the "In the desert, where the cities are made of gold" part references Las Vegas. Maybe the mother, daughter, and new man live in an apartment in Vegas.

"i'm ready to settle down now, *so get than man out of my bed.* I want my daughter back now..."

where does the female perspective randomly come from? Isn't the rest of the song from a male perspective? bizarre. That line stand's out a lot; when first hearing the song I initially assumed it was about a woman who had given up her child for adoption or something...which doesn't seem to be the case looking at the other lyrics!

Yes, *indeed*!!! I'm so glad you pointed that out about the carpenter/twinkling star. Sounds like he's asking to be her savior... or something I'm not quite sure.

Also, about the "So get that man out of my bed"... that's not female perspective as far as I can see. That's him directing Sierra's mother to get HER new man out of her life to make room for himself... because obviously he wants badly to belong there in bed with her. He wants to be Sierra's father figure.

I think the carpenter reference means that he wants to be the father in the family. A husband and father is known to fix the things around the house and be the sort of "carpenter".

He wants to be their carpenter, the leader in their lives, and he wants them to be his everything. His star.

Pretty much, it means that he wants them to be a family.
