Lyrics for A Gentleman Caller as interpreted by ruben

A Gentleman Caller Lyrics
Your gentleman caller
Well, he's been calling on another
He loves his forbidden fruit
And as it dribbles down his chin
He cries, "Baby, I've been drinking with some friends!
Now how about a little kiss?"

Bad boy!
Rub his nose in it
What a mess
And he's playing dumb

Doo do doo do doo do doo do

I'm not looking for a lover
All those lovers are liars
I'd never lie to you
You say you want to get even?
Yeah, you want to get your bad man good?
Well, are you in the mood?

You bad girl!
Does it feel good being bad?
And getting worse?

Doo do doo do doo do doo do

But in the morning
On the sober dawn of Sunday
You're not sure what you have done
Who told you love was fleeting?
Sometimes men can be so misleading
To take what they need from you

Whatever you need to make you feel
Like you've been the one behind the wheel
The sunrise is just over that hill
The worst is over
Whatever I said to make you think
That love's the religion of the weak
This morning we love like weaklings
The worst is over

Doo do doo do doo do doo do
Doo do doo do doo do doo do
Doo do doo do doo do doo do

The worst is over

I cant believe no one has commented on this song yet. Its amazing. Cursive is such a talented band. This song seems to be about some sort of an affair someone was having in a relationship...I know Tim went through a divorce or something...I could be wrong.

my favorite line is " what ever i said to make you think that love's the religion of the weak, this morning we love like weaklings, the worst is over"
there is a lot of trash out there, but this c.d. is a reminder that music is an art form that must be preserved.

Cursive is the definition of amazing.
I think that it's yet another song dedicated to his ex-wife, talking about her new love interest, who ends up being a jerk. "Sometimes men can be so misleading, to take whatever they need from you." He's a jackass, a womanizer, who's just misleading her to "get some" and whatnot. He's not saying that he deserves her back, he's saying, "oh well, you got royally screwed." It's a slap in the face.

i had downloaded a few cursive songs, then my brother bought the album. after just listening to one song and looking at the liner notes, i went out and bought it and i am happy. it is a great album, front to back. it opened me up to all of cursive as well as other saddle creek/conor oberst projects.

C'mon kids. It's not so hard to figure out. It's about a woman whose husband is cheating on her ("he's been calling on another/ he loves his forbidden fruit"), so she cheats on him to get back at him ("You say you want to get even... Does it feel good being bad?"), and the next day she regrets it ("But in the morning... you're not sure what you have done").

it's only me or this song both the way it's built musically and the overall theme reminds of excerpts?

I think its about tim, and about how after his divorce he just starts womanizing and using chicks to make himself feel better.

I also think that "the worst is over' in this song he's saying that it can't get any worse, whereas in Staying Alive he's saying its about to start getting better.

hmm. i'm not sure he's saying things are getting better in staying alive. moreso, in this song, he's saying this is a bad as things can get and in staying alive he's saying i managed to make it through the worst that could happen. so yes, i find staying alive more hopeful but not neccessarily that thing are already getting much better.

The line:
"Who told you love was fleeting?
Sometimes men can be so misleading"

I connected it to the line from Excerpts From Various Notes...:

"We'll push into eachother - love's alive. It might be fleeting, but it's ours and it's tonight... "

I think they go along with each other but I'm not sure what the connection is.

Easily the best Cursive song and I definitely agree that it is about two people who are having an affair on one another.
it is so dismally poetic... I love how Cursive makes pain and angst sound so beautiful

What does this song mean to me? hmmm...well...
you probably couldn't care less but it applies right now. to me.
"he cries, 'Baby, I've been drinking with some friends! Now how 'bout a little kiss...'
Bad boy!"
that pretty much explains it.

looks like , Tim finds a wife whos been cheated on by a drunken husband, convinces her to get even, and sleeps with her. she wakes up, is not sure about love exsisting anymore and tim kind of explains how he used her for sex, thats about as much as i got.

have someone here had a closer look on the song "tränengas im high-end-leben" performed by kettcar - the lyrics are in german, but you may recognize a theme there.

are you people insane? this song is the epitome of misogynist emo/indie-rock.

yes, this is a concept album. the concept is women are fickle, destructive, unfeeling dominatrix bitches, who drag men around by their little heart strings. cursive spews some of the most vile sexism in indie rock today (aside from the brand new/senses fail/etc. bullshit), and the fact that people praise his 'genius' without seeing the real message is infuriating.

when will emo cease to base itself on the male appropraition and exploitation of femininity, and the subjugation of 'cruel, heartless' women?

I'm going to disagree with this concept album being mysogynistic. Maybe it's because Cursive is one of my favorite bands (of all times), but looking at it -- this song -- objectively, I can't see where you get the feeling of "male appropraition and exploitation of feminity."

In these lyrics, all I see is a relationship, possibly based on what he has done - considering how most of his songs are reflections of his own tribulations. There's a couple, the man got bored, grew lazy, became disinterested but he still had feelings for the girl, so he couldn't leave her. And she felt she couldn't do anything about it. But when she does take the drastic measures of sleeping with someone else, because she wants to enact revenge on her lover, she realizes what a mistake she made.

And the ending shows that she is stronger than that - she knows that it was a mistake to do something like that, to think that she had to DO that (cheating on her lover), and I think even the music, the way it was played is a sweet complement to that.

Also, I think the first 3/4 of the song is AMAZING, and while I kind of understand why he pulls it back for the last two minutes, that's not my favorite part (I wonder if I'm alone in saying that?). The lyrics are just beautiful, and they really bring out all the bitterness and anger that people in a relationship could feel.
