Lyrics for Numb as interpreted by ruben

Numb Lyrics
I'm tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless
Lost under the surface
I don't know what you're expecting of me
Put under the pressure
Of walking in your shoes
[Caught in the undertow
/Just caught in the undertow]
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
[Caught in the undertow
/Just caught in the undertow]
I've
Become so numb
I can't feel you there
Become so tired
So much more aware
I'm becoming this
All I want to do
Is be more like me
And be less like you
Can't you see that you're smothering me
Holding too tightly
Afraid to lose control
'Cause everything that you thought I would be
Has fallen apart right in front of you
[Caught in the undertow
/Just caught in the undertow]
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
[Caught in the undertow
/Just caught in the undertow]
I've
Become so numb
I can't feel you there
Become so tired
So much more aware
I'm becoming this
All I want to do
Is be more like me
And be less like you
But I know
I may end up failing too
But I know
You were just like me
With someone disappointed in you
I've
Become so numb
I can't feel you there
Become so tired
So much more aware
I'm becoming this
All I want to do
Is be more like me
And be less like you
I've become so numb I can't feel you there
Is everything what you want me to be
I've become so numb I can't feel you there
Is everything what you want me to be

whoever sed that Linkin Park is in the same catagory as Nsync need to have someone kick them in the face. Nsync is a bunch of gay guys singing about girls and parties, where as Linkin Park actually talks about things that really matter.

I love Numb because it can mean so much for people. People don't expect things of me, but it is so well written.

i agree with the thing about parents - this seems like the relationship i and many of my friends have with our parents.

they want so much from us, they want to protect us, but they can't. instead they smother us both with their protection and their expectations, so eventually we can't feel anything for them any more.

and as for singing about stuff that is important - for some people girls and parties are important, the focus of their life. and i guess they'll post mainly on the songs that are about that. and for other people concerns about depression etc are the focus of their life, so they mainly post here. no one can say what is important in life, i think i'd prefer to be concerned with girls and parties than depression, but sadly that isn't a choice i have been able to make.

and who saw linkin park at dpwnload 2004? Cos they were superb!! :D

and i agree that this song is about controlling parents, it ramindes me of my ex, who was always upset cos her dad was always dissapointed in her, i wanted her to let go of that cos she should just be herself and not care about what he says, but sadly i wasnt able to convice her :(

I think is song is incredibly awesome, co what if it's straight forward? Some things that try to add depth just end up in the gray area anyway.
This reminds me so much of my life, I mean, my parents tell me they're fine with me and my grades, but I get an F, and they give me the "I'm dissapointed, we were straight A students. Why can't you be perfect? It's not like you don't have the genes for it." look.
The music video was awesome too. Being ignored, by peers AND by a parent, who can't even tell if you're happy or not, it's cool. And it really happens to most people I know.
For the people who don't like it, it's cool to have your opinions, but, I think it's pretty pointless to come on here time after time, just to say you don't like something. Same with coming again and again to praise something. It gets annoying.

I agree with what most of the people on here have said, it is a good song, about being tired of living up the expectations of mother, father, girlfriend, boyfriend, teacher, etc. I think a lot of people here possibly just have too many issues with their parents, which they will get over with time. And I do agree that Linkin Park is not that great of a band. All of their songs follow a set formula and speak plainly rather than allowing different interpretations of the meanings. That is what makes songs 'good,' being able to view them in different ways, and allowing new audiences to interpret them as they see fit. As I said though, a good song. But as someone else noted, they are somewhat similar to NSync in that they are catering to the present generation by giving them what they want, instead of telling girls how pretty they are or whatnot, they are telling people, as many of you have interpreted it: you're parents are asses, don't do as they say. And with the teenage rebellious thing, that fits perfectly and sells. As I remember one of my friends saying "Linkin Park is hard rock for people who don't like their rock hard." It is not the same as so many other bands because it is catering to pop culture - I mean, they put a damn rapper in their band for that - they sing about this horrible pain that every teenager goes through at one point or another, and they even named their band Linkin Park so their CD's would be located next to Limp Bizkit (who was at the time they started a really popular band). They are persons who are out to make money rather than to make music, than that is why the band sucks.

Wow, you guys said it all good. I believe a lot of your posts captured the gist of this song.

But I'll have to write my view just because I feel this song so much like all of you!

Let me relate on a personal note:

For some reason when a lot of people meet me or befriend me, they see me as this lump of clay that they can mold. People try so hard to help me, except they do so by pushing their values on me.

It sucks at times because usually I'm forced to retalliate in pointing out their mistakes back at them, just so they see they aren't so perfect either.

I have listened too many times in the past before, and it has screwed me up. Today, I realize I got where I am because of myself. And my unique spiritual lifestyle makes it so people usually don't really know what's good for me.

"Just don't let your feelings get in the way, don't be emotional," they say.

But I've learned to live my life through my heart and everything that I am is built upon emotion. Glad I stopped listening to that piece of advice.

People don't know me enough and they have to be sure of this: People CANNOT change me, but I CAN change for people.

I know what you mean killfriartuck, all those small kids wearing LP-shirts, therefore thinking they're cool, but not really listening to the songs. But I still like Linkin Park.

I think this song's about being criticized too much your whole life. You don't know what to do anymore, because everything you did was wrong. And you're fed-up with being told off so much.

to me, this song means that a person trys to fit in with people at school and/or family members and dosen't fir in. Also the family wants that person to be perfect, but every time that person fails of what they should be.

Well, I'm simply not going to say it has one meaning because I believe the opposite of what someone said before me. As the question asks...what does the song mean to you? That doesn't mean you come out and critisize it and say that other people can't relate to it and new people can't come into liking the songs. Besides the fact that I disagree with that, I will just say that just because you can't relate to a band in many ways...doesn't mean other people can't. As for what dunnotknome said...I think many different people with many different problems can relate to their songs but as for numb...this possibily is one of those songs that not everyone could relate to. It's directed towards a very large audience though which is generally teens around 15 that simply want to live their life the way they see fit and there's nothing wrong with that. If this band was only meant for people that have certain problems..then it was created for that reason...maybe only people that have the problems should listen to their songs? Just think about that

as for the band not having different interpretations of meaning...I would argue that by talking about the song breaking the habit. In that video, director Joe Hahn shows many different ways that several people go about to break the habit. Just because you can't interpret the meaning of some of their songs possibily doesn't mean that millions of others can't.
