I love this song...yet it breaks my heart. This guy I was recently involved with loves Rufio, and proclaimed this song as 'our song.' I love it, but it hurts so much to listen to it.

Best song out of 1985 but still...nothing can beat Perhaps I Suppose.

I think this song has 2 meanings, or could have 2 meanings I should say. Either he still loves the girl he broke up with: "inside my heart

this song reminds me of my girlfriend and this song reminds her of me...because of the lines:

"something strange in me
i feel the same for you
but there is no difference
were still alone
there is no need in crying
there is no need in dying
it makes no difference
were still alone"

because its like we are extremely happy with each other, been together for a while and still no arguments or disagreements. but she lives 20 miles away. so its like even though we are together and really happy, we are still alone most of the time because its hard to see her. i need to get my drivers license. :(

This song to me describes a boy that likes a girl and they are out somewhere with friends, and she is keeping everyone talking ( We'll wave your gone silence evolves), When she's gone it goes silent. and because the boy likes this girl he wants her to come home with him and make sweet love to him. *Cokme home with me tonight, We'll lay til dark turns light* but she walks away *I've lost you girl*

It means, and this is pretty obvious.

he loves this girl, and they are in a relationship.
they have been together for a really long time.

but at some point in time, he has started to feel differently. he feels alone and doesn't feel the same connection.

he has to leave her, it's not fair to either of them for them to stay together, no matter how hard breaking up may be.

but while he is trying to gain the courage to break up with her, every so often he will remember how things used to be, how in love they were.

which makes it impossible for him, but he knows he must go.

This song is complicated, but understandable if you have been in this position. (P.S. The lyrics that are at the top of this page ARE wrong... Check the lyrics in the cd case)

The first Stanza:
The speaker thinks about "you" constantly, but is unable to actually see them in real life. What little time is spent together is far too short. Just when true emotions are allowed to be expressed, it's time to go. "These shattered eyes" is the crying over having to leave

Second:
Talking about the heartbreak over the leaving, how much it hurts

third:
the speaker just wants to be able to spend all night with the other person, ad describes this, but again returns to the realization that this can't happen. So they wave goodbye, and there's no more talking because "you" aren't there anymore. The silence when curled up together, when just being together changes into the silence of being alone. but the speaker just wants "you" to come follow them after they leave.

fourth:
the speaker still feels the need, the longing, even though they aren't together. there is nothing that can be done, at least at this point, to change what is going on, the fact that the speaker has to leave. Crying won't change that the speaker has to leave, killing yourself won't make it any better.

the whole song is comparing what could be with what is. It describes the longing and the love between two people that can't see each other as often as they wish. It's about how much paint there can be, but it must just be dealt with until 'you' can "Follow me home."
