Flying at Tree Level (Version 1.0) Lyrics
We were doomed from the start
As lovers are Why am I doing this? Digging my own grave though it's shallow I would lie in it Work down in the basement in the dark after we crash your car Hoping fast that the arrow hits the mark so you know who we are Please keep the reporters at bay This is a matter of life and death, but I deal with things like this every day Please keep the reporters at bay You never do what I tell you to You never do what I say We've been hurting a long time trying hard for this We all have sizable scars We got it You'd break it all apart We got it We can make it work like this, like this, like this Yes we are a bullet in the heart and the message is sent Always dragging your feet on the sand and the hot cement Make a list of your favorites, write it down, make it legible A problem we're always facing, we never rest You either push or pull Please keep the crowd under control This is a matter of life and death and we're not prepared, we just want you to know Please keep the crowd under control This is the weight of my conscience This is our all time low We've been hurting a long time trying hard for this We all have sizable scars We got it You'd break it all apart We got it We can make it work like this, like this, like this I see my baby She's starry eyed I feel my bones break all the time I see my baby She's starry eyed She follows Don't call me a god I see my baby She's starry eyed I feel my bones break all the time I see my baby She's starry eyed She follows Don't call me a god We've been hurting a long time trying hard for this We all have sizable scars We got it You'd break it all apart We got it We can make it work like this, like this, like this We've been hurting a long time trying hard for this We all have sizable scars We got it You'd break it all apart We got it We could make it work like this, like this, like this

The lyrics on this page are from 'Flying at Tree Level'
The acoustic song that you are talking about that talks of a shipwreck is 'Play Crack the Sky'
And 'I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light' is track number 4 on Deja Entendu...("I am heaven sent, don't you dare forget")

well anyway, this is flying at tree level, which i think is a really interesting name, i mean why the (ver. 1.0) bit? does that mean BN will work on this song before making it an album release.. hmm..
this is just wild speculation and im not even pretending to be right about this or anything but does anyone see the link to Failure By Design from YFW?
"work down in the basement, after we crash your car"
and
"what say we go and crash your car?"
i have no idea about when either of those songs were written but i have just started thinking that this song could be about Brand New getting more famous and how they cope with this.
we know from "I Will Play My Game Beneath The Spinlight" that Jesse views his lyrics as "spilling his guts" and that he "cuts himself wide open on stage". i think this song has more references to these feelings.
such as "digging my own grave, though its shallow, i will lie in it" i think that this means by writing this stuff he is digging his own grave, the act of writing about his personal feelings is shallow, but he finds success because of it and he is confused by this.
"the arrow hitting the mark" is him hoping that he makes songs which people can identify with it, thus bringing the band more success.
the chorus reminds me a little of "A Slow Descent" by Straylight Run, dont ask me why.
i think that the chorus shows that they have been working hard to get where they are in the industry, but "you" (the fans) could break it all apart. i think that the "sizeable scars" they suffer is another reference to the emotional turmoil that Jesse goes through writing these lyrics.
"we are a bullet in the heart" smacks of the self-aggrandizement found in "Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Dont" and i think again Jesse is trying to transmit the way his lyrics are supposed to affect the listener but in a vaguely ironic way, i dont believe that Jesse REALLY believes that his lyrics affect people this way, the same as he surely doesnt mean in "Okay i believe you..." that he is the best at what he does, etc.
the problem with this confused examination of these lyrics is the "i see my baby..." bridge, which i cannot really fit into the theme.
anyway, i would be interested to see if anyone agrees with these points cause im not entirely sure anyway!
what does everyone else think?

The first lines summarise the central theme of the song. “We were doomed from the start, As lovers are”
This suggests that considering the concept of lovers, the demise of their relationship was always inevitable.
I agree with the point Jon made, about the shallowness of writing a song based upon his personal feelings. This song walk us through the break-up itself.
“The arrow hitting the mark so you know who we are” tells us that he hopes what he says comes out right and when he says “and the message is sent” this implies that he’s told her how he feels.
The sizeable scars he refers to could be how he perceives his former relationships.
The line “Always dragging your feet over sand and over hot cement” illustrates her dragging her feet over materials which harm/irritate the body, thus causing a scar or discomfort. It sounds as if he’s also saying that this is self-imposed; she's hurt herself intentionally or has motivated him to hurt her.
I think the line “you either push or pull” states that you can’t push and pull at the same time in a relationship or else the forces will be balanced, i.e. the relationship stays stationary.
He addresses the person who is the subject of the song directly throughout the song, “so you know who we are” but I believe that the bridge is his escapism; where he detaches himself from the situation his is in, “I see my baby. She’s starry-eyed”.
“Please keep the crowd under control, this is the weight of my conscience” confirms that the crowd of thoughts in his head is weighing him down.
i could have completely misinterpreted the song but oh well. i'm sure i'll get over it. :o)
