Am I correct to defend the fist that holds this pen?
It's ink that lies, the pen, the page, the paper
I live, I learn you will always take what I have earned
And so aid my end while I believe I'm winning

Our friends speak out in our defense
Pay ten deaf ears for two months rent
We burn the gallows they erect
And cut the nooses they tie for our necks

You constantly make it impossible to make conversation
We're comatose but audible
But I liked it the farther I get out
We passed it off, but it's all on us
Well common conversation, it took everything I got
And I liked it the farther I get out

Once said always said
I will hold the past over your head
I'll speak my mind whenever I feel slighted
I am hellbent on extracting all of my revenge
So take heart, sweetheart
Or I will take it from you

I slip concealed back to the keep
Concede to do the work for free
We prey as wolves among the sheep
And slit the necks of soldiers while they sleep

You constantly make it impossible to make conversation
We're comatose but audible
And I liked it the farther I get out
We passed it off, but it's all on us
Well common conversation, it took everything I got
And I like it the farther I get out

You constantly make it impossible to make conversation
We're comatose but audible
And I liked it the farther I get out
We passed it off, but it's all on us
Well common conversation, it took everything I got
And I like it the farther I get out

My Interpretation:I read that this song is about their label, or maybe the music industry in general. Applying that to the lyrics, it seems like a good match.
"Am I correct to defend the fist that holds this pen?/It's ink that lies, the pen, the page, the paper/I live, I learn you will always take what I have earned/And so aid my end while I believe I'm winning"
The first line is clearly about how he defends himself and his emotions and his lyrics. Even if the lyrics aren't true to him ("it's ink that lies"), he may believe they're true to someone, or he just simply loves writing lyrics so much (in the chorus -- "And I liked it the farther I get out"). In any industry -- literature, art, music -- the people who directly make the product aren't ever given full credit for the piece, many other people gain credit, as well, and in turn, the people directly related to the work don't gain all the profits for it, and because they gain popularity, fans and some money, the artists think they've won, while the stress of the industry builds and builds.
"Our friends speak out in our defense/Pay ten deaf ears for two months rent/We burn the gallows they erect/And cut the nooses they tie for our necks"
My thoughts on this verse keep changing, so I'm going to assume it's best not to say anything and look like a fool.
"You constantly make it impossible to make conversation/We're comatose but audible/But I liked it the farther I get out/We passed it off, but it's all on us/Well common conversation, it took everything I got/And I liked it the farther I get out"
Talking about how, despite this being the industry of free speech and self-expression, it's hard to make something that is acceptable to the people in charge. They're 'comatose' because they can't really do much about any of this, but they're 'audible,' because they still release new songs and they still perform for fans. And as I said earlier, the singer likes the work he's doing and doesn't want to quit. He explains how it took 'everything [he's] got' just to write simple lyrics, but he still likes it. The chorus is kind of like what balances the song out. It's what makes this song not negative and not positive. It shows how, despite all the complaints he has towards the industry/his label, he still likes it and doesn't want to leave it.
"Once said always said/I will hold the past over your head/I'll speak my mind whenever I feel slighted/I am hellbent on extracting all of my revenge/So take heart, sweetheart/Or I will take it from you"
This could be about promises given to him by his label, or benefits he hasn't been given, possibly? The second line explains how the narrator will continue to write these lyrics that he knows the label may not accept, and he will continue to speak his mind, not matter how the people higher up than him in the industry may feel about it.
"I slip concealed back to the keep/Concede to do the work for free/We prey as wolves among the sheep/And slit the necks of soldiers while they sleep"
I'm not too sure what the first two lines are speaking of, but it could possibly be that he is saying how he will go back to the studio and he will go back to writing and he will continue to work for the low amount of money he was previously doing so for. They may feel as if they are "prey[ing] as wolves among the sheep" by just living lives (fairly) simply and in a world with people who aren't doing the same things as them, and using those people and their situations as inspiration to form opinions and write lyrics. They "slit the necks of soldiers while they sleep" by evoking emotions in their listeners by writing lyrics that connect with them. They're "slit[ting their] necks" by making them feel something in their "sleep" (could refer to a variety of things -- depression, stress, pretty much anything).

General Comment:To me, this song is about maybe someone who used to have a lot of close friends, but those relationships started to get more difficult to maintain. By the title, is it right for me to assume that the person speaking tried to kill themselves? Maybe failed and then everybody suddenly wants to be his friend again. To be honest, I was in that position myself and after it happened to me, I got an influx of people just wanting "to talk" and they were people who I had some kind of relationship in the past with, who didn't care about talking when we were friends. This song kinda illustrates the feelings I had about those people, trying to make conversation, but really the whole time you're wondering "what happened to us?"
That's just what the song means to me.

General Comment:for me this is about best friends who gradually grew apart. and now are so much like strangers that it's impossible to make conversation. but it's worse than strangers, because they knew they were once friends and aren't anymore, so the potential is no longer there, and it's hard because they're in the same circle of friends.
and the person speaking is the one more effected by it and blames their friend for growing apart, hence holding the past over your head and revenge. but that's just me :)

General Comment:You know, I got this CD last year and I only realized that this song ins 7 minutes long five minutes ago. I've listened to it 52 times... ... ... anyway, yeah about the hotel california part.

This is a really amazing song though, I really, really love it. Something about Deja's feel is really great.

I always thought this was about a failed relationship, but the record label thing makes sense now, except "We're comatose, but we're audible" always seemed to mean to me like, we're here and we're listening. Cause sometimes when people fall into coma's they can still hear the things around them, people speaking.. etc. It might not be true because I read a book about a kid like that when I was.... uh.. 9. But I think it's like people not realizing you're there. Have you ever woken up and people are talking about you cause they think you're sleeping? Like that.

    Anyway, thats what I think, idk if its right, but overall it's a great song, my favorite lines are;

I will hold the past over your head
I'll speak my mind whenever I feel slighted
I am hellbent on extracting all of my revenge

    :) Just great.

My Interpretation:First of all... Who cares where, when and if its on the cd...

Second of all... This song is about their record company and the critics which lables them as "another pop punk band" and themselves compromising their beliefs for money...
